PAS warns of disciplinary action over insensitive remarks
PETALING JAYA : PAS says it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any of its members who engage in insensitive behaviour that undermines national unity and fosters disharmony.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said a controversial Facebook post by a division chief regarding newly promoted lieutenant-general Johnny Lim was completely against the party's stance.
Lim's promotion made him the first senior Malaysian Chinese officer to attain the three-star rank, and Takiyuddin stressed that the appointment was a historic event that should be celebrated by all Malaysians.
'Diversity and differences in background should never be used as a reason or justification to treat any member of society unfairly,' he said in a statement tonight.
'Nor should they be used as grounds to deny progress, opportunities, achievements, abilities, or the legitimate aspirations of any individual or group.
'Racism or racial attitudes in any form or colour have no place in PAS and are incompatible with the nation's broader cultural values and national aspirations.'
Yesterday, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad speculated in a Facebook post about Malaysia having its first Chinese prime minister in the next 30 to 40 years.
The post included a screenshot of a news report on Lim's promotion to lieutenant-general, with a caption stating that the image was merely for decorative purposes.
Zaharudin has since said the image of Lim had no connection to the 'satirical message' in his posting, which drew a public backlash. The post has since been deleted.
Takiyuddin said the post was in complete contradiction to official policies, resolutions and vision of PAS, as outlined in its constitution, resolutions of its annual general meetings, party meetings or official statements.
He said PAS remains committed to upholding the principles and realities of Malaysia's ethnic and religious diversity, which is a 'unique and valuable' feature of Malaysian society that must be 'nurtured carefully'.
Takiyuddin said PAS clearly demonstrated this when it agreed to amend the party's constitution to allow non-Muslims to become members of the Islamic party.
'The talent, achievements, progress and success of any Malaysian in any field should be a cause for collective celebration, not the opposite.
'PAS extends its congratulations to lieutenant-general Lim,' he said.

Malaysia hopes cross-border e-hailing with Singapore can be implemented, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is open to introducing cross-border e-hailing services with Singapore, but the initiative must be pursued jointly by both countries, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. "In principle, we hope that cross-border e-hailing can be implemented," he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to Tebrau member of parliament Jimmy Puah's question on cross-border traffic congestion and e-hailing drivers. Loke said that the government was ready to discuss the matter further with Singapore, but cautioned that it could not be a unilateral decision. "As a matter of principle and policy, we are ready to discuss with Singapore to enhance cross-border connectivity, but this cannot be carried out unilaterally. Both parties must agree before it can be implemented," he added. The minister explained that any proposal to allow cross-border e-hailing required in-depth discussions at the government-to-government level. "We hope to continue these discussions and hope that Singapore will respond positively so that this idea can become a reality," he said. On Aug 3, it was reported by a news portal that cross-border e-hailing services were one of the matters discussed between Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Singapore Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Aug 1. However, the island state's Land Transport Authority (LTA) clarified that no decision was made on the issue and that it has no plans to fully liberalise Singapore-Malaysia cross-border point-to-point transport via ride-hail services.

Court throws out Halim Saad's attempt to reinstate Renong takeover suit
(From left) Halim Saad claimed that Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Nor Mohamed Yakcop 'forced' him to relinquish his stake in Renong-UEM, together with all rights vested in him, without adequate compensation more than 23 years ago. PUTRAJAYA : Tycoon Halim Saad has failed to reinstate his lawsuit against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and two others over the government's takeover of his holdings in the Renong-UEM Group. The Court of Appeal dismissed Halim's appeal today on grounds that this lawsuit, filed in 2023, was time-barred. Justice Supang Lian, who led a three-member bench, said Halim's lawsuit was a plain and obvious case for striking out. Justices Lim Chong Fong and Alwi Wahab also heard the appeal. The court ordered Halim to pay RM20,000 in costs to the defendants, who included former second finance minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop and the government. In the suit, Halim claimed that Mahathir and Mohamed 'forced' him to relinquish his stake in Renong-UEM, together with all rights vested in him, without adequate compensation more than 23 years ago. Mahathir was prime minister from July 1981 to October 2003, and again from May 2018 to February 2020. Halim alleged that Mahathir and Mohamed were 'the prime movers in respect of the said compulsory acquisition and deprivation'. The stake was said to comprise 372 million shares, and represented 16% of Renong Bhd's entire share capital. Halim claimed that the shares, acquired by government investment arm Khazanah Nasional Bhd through its subsidiary in 2001, belonged to him personally and not to Umno, a fact acknowledged by Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Nov 24, 1997. Anwar was Mahathir's deputy and also the finance minister and Umno deputy president at the time. Halim claimed that UEM then held a 32.6% stake in Renong, while Renong held a 37.92% share in UEM. The suit sought an unspecified amount in compensation or, alternatively, general, aggravated and exemplary damages to be assessed by the court, together with interest and costs. The High Court struck out the lawsuit in May last year. Lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar appeared for Halim while senior federal counsel Ahmad Hanir Hambaly and Imtiyaz Wizni Aufa Othman appeared for Mahathir, Mohamed and the government.

16 MA63 Demands Still Under Review
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Sixteen demands under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), out of 29, are still under review by the Technical Committee of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63), said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the demands involve issues related to education, healthcare, oil royalties, petroleum cash payments, oil minerals and fields, the Territorial Sea Act 2012 (Act 750), as well as state rights over the continental shelf. Fadillah said 13 claims have been resolved, nine under the MADANI Government and four during the previous administration. 'Among the claims resolved under the MADANI Government's administration are the recognition of the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) in Sabah and Sarawak as Technical Departments under Treasury Instruction 182 (AP182), as well as the transfer of the Electricity Regulatory Authority to the Sabah state government. "(The resolved demands) also include the amendment to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Act 1995 to appoint representatives from the Sabah and Sarawak state governments as permanent members of the IRB, as well as amendments to the Sabah Labour Ordinance and the Sarawak Labour Ordinance,' he said during the winding up debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Fadillah said the MTPMA63, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was established to review the demands submitted by the Sabah and Sarawak state governments, based on the legal framework and implementation of the agreed-upon claims. "The MADANI Government is fully committed to expediting the resolution of all MA63 demands. However, the timeframe for resolving each demand is subject to the relevant legal processes. '…the readiness of the Sabah and Sarawak state governments in terms of operations, human resources, and finances must also be considered before a claim under the MA63 can be resolved,' he added. On measures to reduce flood risks, Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the ministry, through JPS, has implemented structural and non-structural strategies nationwide to improve drainage systems and infrastructure.
