Malaysia eyes regional expansion for local films and animation IPs: Fahmi
Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025
By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The government is strengthening regional cooperation to expand the reach of Malaysia's creative intellectual properties (IPs), including local films and animation, into regional markets, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) is actively forging strategic partnerships to facilitate the entry of Malaysian creative IPs into high-potential Asean markets, including Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. 'We've seen how Upin & Ipin received tremendous response in Indonesia. Several local films have also successfully penetrated markets like Vietnam and Cambodia. 'These efforts will be intensified to open wider opportunities for our local creative industry players,' he said when asked about the direction of the animation sector following the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises the creative economy as a new driver of national growth, at the press conference on Riuh Hangout 2025 here today. Also present were Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa. Fahmi said that both Finas and MyCreative Ventures have been tasked with not only providing funding but also facilitating collaboration between animation creators and corporate banking institutions that are increasingly recognising the revenue potential of the creative industry. 'We want to foster synergy between the corporate banking sector and the creative industry in terms of financing. These ties will be strengthened, while licensing and distribution matters will be handled by Finas,' he said. Fahmi noted that this initiative aligns with the 13th Malaysia Plan's (13MP) focus on developing the creative economy, particularly by expanding into export markets and boosting the global competitiveness of Malaysian creative content. He added that further details on the initiative are expected to be presented during his winding-up speech on the debate on the 13MP in Parliament on Aug 20. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia's new maritime vessel takes shape
KUALA LUMPUR: Construction of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) multi-purpose mission ship (MPMS) has begun with a keel laying ceremony at Desan Kaptanoglu Shipyard in Turkiye. The ceremony, officiated by MMEA director of engineering First Admiral Mohd Rizal Hishamuddin and MPMS project director Kpt Mohammad Nasir Man yesterday, marked the start of joining the main blocks for the largest vessel in the agency's history. Mohd Rizal said the initial phase of the keel laying involved the installation of blocks 107, 108, 207, and 208, which formed the ship's midsection, Bernama reported. 'This keel laying tradition marks the start of the main block assembly process and carries symbolic significance for the construction of a strategic national asset,' he said in a statement yesterday. Mohd Rizal said the 99m-long and 17m-wide MPMS was designed for deep-sea operations lasting up to 28 days without resupply, and would be deployed for surveillance in the Exclusive Economic Zone as well as to monitor areas inaccessible to smaller vessels. Equipped with advanced defence technology, he said the MPMS would feature an unmanned aerial vehicle, a 30mm cannon, X- and S-band radars, a helicopter landing pad, a rigid-hull inflatable boat, and four fast interceptor craft. 'The MPMS can travel at 20 knots, accommodate 70 crew members and 20 passengers, and will have onboard medical and detention facilities,' added Mohd Rizal. Meanwhile, Desan Kaptanoglu Shipyard board chairman Cenk Ismail Kaptanoglu said in the same statement that achieving the keel laying milestone so soon after the contract signing on May 20 demonstrated the efficiency and commitment of all parties involved. 'The steel blocks installed today will not only form the backbone of the MPMS but also symbolise the strategic relationship and determination of Turkiye and Malaysia to strengthen maritime security. 'As with our previous projects, we are confident the MPMS can be delivered ahead of the March 2027 schedule,' he said.

Najib betrayed public's trust, court told
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here was told that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak betrayed the public's trust by misusing RM42mil from SRC International Sdn Bhd, funds that were meant to benefit Malaysia's energy future and civil service pensioners. Counsel Kwan Will Sen, representing SRC International and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, in a civil suit against Najib, said it has been 10 years since the money ended up in Najib's personal accounts and now, the two companies want it returned. Kwan made these remarks while delivering the opening statement on the first day of the trial in the civil suit filed by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari against Najib, who is the sole defendant. 'Three courts, namely the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court, have already found him criminally guilty of these very acts beyond a reasonable doubt. 'Najib was the finance minister at the time and had full control over SRC International. He held key positions, including that of adviser emeritus. 'As such, no significant transaction occurred without his knowledge or consent,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported. Kwan added that evidence will show the RM42mil was transferred from SRC International and ultimately ended up in Najib's personal bank accounts. Of this sum, RM32mil was immediately transferred to two companies that had previously covered shortfalls in Najib's accounts. 'These transfers were made pursuant to instruction letters bearing his personal signature. 'The remaining RM10mil was spent through personal cheques issued by Najib himself. 'We say that the money trail is clear, the documentary evidence is overwhelming, and Najib's own sworn admissions are damning. 'We will prove our case under three complementary causes of action: knowing receipt, dishonest assistance and misfeasance in public office. 'On any of these grounds, justice demands that these public funds be returned to their rightful owners, the Malaysian people,' Kwan said. The court also heard testimony from the first witness, former chief executive officer of Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, Ung Su Ling, 57, whose appointment was approved by Najib. The hearing before Justice Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan is set to continue on Nov 6. The lawsuit, filed in May 2022, accuses Najib of breach of fiduciary duties, knowing receipt of funds, dishonest assistance, tort of misfeasance in public office, and abuse of power in relation to the misappropriation of SRC International funds.

Exploring the evolving role of CFOs
Wealth of experience: Jomo talking during the keynote session at the CFO Forum 2025 at W Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Senior finance leaders and industry experts from across Malaysia converged at the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Forum 2025 to explore the evolving role of CFOs in a rapidly changing business landscape. The two-day event organised by Star Media Group (SMG), held at the W Hotel Kuala Lumpur from Aug 13-14, highlighted how finance leaders are moving beyond traditional financial gatekeeping to become strategic innovators and key drivers of digital change. The forum kicked off with a keynote session by Khazanah Research Institute research adviser Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram who has decades of experience in global economic policy. Jomo shared that finance leaders must navigate an unstable and unpredictable global environment shaped by geopolitical forces and especially with the implementation of tariffs by the United States. 'There's no single solution for how finance leaders should balance short-term agility and long-term resilience in the business. 'This is because every company faces different situations, especially depending on their industry,' he said. Following the keynote address, Orange Business CFO for Asia Pacific François Bresson presented a session on how the CFO's role is shifting from managing finances to leading business strategy and innovation. The day's events also featured a spotlight session by Airwallex Malaysia country manager Aren Yip, gold sponsor of the event, who spoke on Harnessing Fintech for Global Growth. Yip highlighted Malaysia's potential to become South-East Asia's leading financial hub, driven by its digital-savvy population and robust regulations. 'CFOs need easy access to global financial tools like multi-currency accounts and local payouts to help Malaysian businesses expand regionally,' he said. 'Companies may face risks like losing money due to following the traditional way of transactions which are slower. 'Hence, when costs rise uncontrollably, profit margins are squeezed, leaving companies with less profit from each sale,' he said, noting however that international companies in Singapore and Hong Kong are already adapting to it. He also advised about changing perceptions of CFOs, who have been in the industry for many years, to be agile by adapting to consolidating systems, reducing manual workflows, and not becoming just a cost centre. The forum featured insightful panel discussions between networking sessions. The first panel, titled Delivering Financial Results, was moderated by Deloitte CFO programme leader Ho Kok Yong. Panellists were Arnott's Asia finance director Asia and commercial director Japan Vinayak Sasitharan, Mamee-Double Decker CFO Lionel Lim, Siemens Energy vice-president, finance Asia Pacific Karna Mohan and Warner Music Group finance director for Malaysia and Singapore Lee Pei Lu. This was followed by a discussion on Accelerate Digitalisation which focused on the importance of digital transformation. The panel included leaders from Accenture managing director, strategy and consulting, CFO and enterprise value Kevin Leung, Asahi Holdings Southeast Asia Sdn Bhd senior vice-president group finance Presanya Krishnan, Electrolux director finance controlling BA APAC and MEA and director GSSC KL Joanne Tsung, Veolia Water Technologies Asia Pacific CFO Jessica Pinto and PETRONAS Lubricants International group controller for industrial Devang Merchant. They shared best practices for using new technologies to enhance efficiency and drive growth. The final discussion on Navigating Uncertainty addressed the challenges of today's unpredictable business world. Some distinguished panellists and moderators were Volvo Cars Group head of Asia Pacific (APeC) finance cluster Faisal Irfan, Fosroc regional finance controller for Asia Diana Cheang, HAVI Logistics (M) Sdn Bhd country head of finance Christina Ong, NTT Data Payment Services executive director and chief financial officer Lim Chee Keat and SAP Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief financial officer Jessica Low. Together they explored how CFOs can leverage next-generation financial tools such as advanced analytics and real-time data to make better decisions and prepare for the future. The CFO Forum provided a powerful platform for professionals to exchange knowledge, strengthen decision-making, and boost their organisations' brand visibility. The event served as a catalyst for growth and innovation, equipping leaders to drive business value in a dynamic and complex economic landscape.
