Jyothi Yarraji ruled out of 2025 season due to knee injury
'Due to an unfortunate injury to my knee during training a few days back, I've had to put a pause on my season,' Yarraji posted on her Instagram story on Wednesday. 'I'm working with my medical team to assess my options and make a decision on the way forward.
'Injuries are part of an athlete's journey, and I am viewing this as just another hurdle I am going to overcome soon with all your support and blessings. I will be back stronger,' she added.
Former Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Dr Adille J Sumariwalla later confirmed that the injury will require surgery and will sideline Jyothi for the entirety of the season, according to Olympics.com.
Yarraji, the national record holder in the women's 100m hurdles with a personal best timing of 12.78s, was last seen in action at the Taiwan Athletics Open last month, where she clinched a gold medal.
The Indian athlete also clocked 12.96s to win gold at the Asian Athletics Championship earlier this year. Yarraji's injury also ends her bid to compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which is set to take place from September 13 to 21.
Yarraji won a silver medal at the Asian Games and started her 2025 season in February with a gold in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter run at the National Games before taking first place in the 100-meter hurdles at the Federation Cup. (ANI)

New Delhi: In a historic first for the indigenous sport, players from the Indian men's and women's Kho Kho World Cup-winning teams have been invited as special guests to the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. The invitation marks the first time Kho Kho players will be part of India's Independence Day ceremony. Earlier this year, both Indian teams made history by clinching the men's and women's titles at the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup, held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium from January 13 to 19, 2025. The tournament saw participation from 39 teams (20 men's and 19 women's) representing 23 countries across six continents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the nation in the Independence Day address from the iconic Red Fort on August 15. This year's celebration will host around 5,000 special guests from diverse fields, including sportspersons, innovators, and community leaders. 'It is a great promotion for the indigenous sport of Kho Kho. I have only seen Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations on television, and this is the first time I will attend them with my teammates. It's a great feeling,' said Nirmala Bhati, a member of the World Cup-winning women's team. 'We all feel elated that Kho Kho players have been invited for the first time. It's a moment of pride for all of us, and we sincerely thank KKFI president Sudhanshu Mittal and M.S. Tyagi for their unwavering support,' said Pratik Waikar, captain of the victorious men's team. 'It's a privilege and honour for the sport of Kho Kho. The journey of these players is one of dedication, perseverance, and passion. The Asia Cup 2025 will serve as the start of India's preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026; hence, it's quite possible that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors could make a few changes to the squad. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After a memorable 2-2 draw in the Test series under first-time captain Shubman Gill, a handful of media reports have stated that the 25-year-old will be the new vice-captain in the T20I side, making his return to the shortest format. New report says Gill may lose out on Asia Cup Gill last played T20Is in Sri Lanka in July 2024, but could replace Axar Patel as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy if reports turn out to be true. Besides news agency PTI, the Times of India also reported the same, arguing that BCCI prefers one captain across all formats, and while SKY is set to continue as captain, Gill becoming the vice-captain is seen as a natural progression. 'Indian cricket has usually leaned towards captains across formats who can cater to the market forces and bring substantial brand value. That Gill has become a major brand can't be ignored,' the TOI report said. However, there's a latest twist. On Thursday, RevSportz said that Gill may not even make it to the Asia Cup 2025 squad. As per RevSportz, Gill would struggle to get a chance in the squad as the top order is already occupied. To make space for Gill, Sanju Samson would have to be demoted to No.3 as the other opener, Abhishek Sharma, is currently ranked No.1 in the shortest format. But Tilak and Suryakumar have consistently been sharing the No.3 and No.4 slots, which means either Samson would be pushed out or Gill would not be included. The report added that 'to include Gill could mean not doing justice to the others.' Bumrah set to play in Asia Cup? Also, we want to remind you that the news agency PTI said earlier that pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to play the Asia Cup 2025. To manage his workload, selectors may give him rest during the first Test against the West Indies at home that starts on 2 October. The Asia Cup final is scheduled for 28 September. The report also added that Arsheeep Singh will be the second pacer, and one among Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna could be the third fast bowler. The squad is expected to be picked on 19 or 20 August. India start their campaign on 10 September against the UAE in Dubai.
