The award was presented on Thursday at a national ceremony held in New Delhi, and was received by GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania, in the presence of senior dignitaries and representatives from urban local bodies across the country.
Securing the 44th rank in the nationwide competition, conducted by the ministry of housing and urban affairs, was a significant jump from last year's 402 nd position. The city also earned certifications for 'ODF+' (open defecation free plus) and GFC (garbage free city) one star status, for which the CM lauded the officials, sanitation workers and citizens for their collective efforts in promoting urban hygiene.
"Guwahati's progress, under the Swachh Bharat Mission reflects Assam's broader development vision, driven by inclusion and people centric governance," Sarma said.
Newly appointed GMC commissioner MS Lakshmi Priya, who along with Jayanta Mallabaruah and the entire team, apprising the CM about the city's national achievement, expressed gratitude for the continued guidance and support of state govt. She said that the recognition is a result of coordinated action, public participation, and the tireless commitment of workforce.

Industrial effluents flow into drain in Ghaziabad, locals raise health concerns

Ghaziabad: Black oil residue has been seeping into drainage systems in Sahibabad Site IV industrial area. The situation has become critical as chemical discharge from surrounding industries has transformed the drain water into a black, polluted stream, triggering serious environmental and health concerns. Dr Sunil Vaid, a resident of neighbouring Vaishali, wrote to the regional manager of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the city health officer, stating the significant presence of black oil in the drains, which is a cause of substantial environmental damage and poses a health hazard. "The water has become completely black and foul-smelling. It appears that no restrictions are being enforced on industries discharging their waste into the drains," said Vaid, who also sent a copy of the letter to the GMC commissioner. Deputy commandant at IAAT, Hemant Kothiyal, said the expedition, named "BSF Alpine Training & Mountaineering Expedition-2025," was launched by IG (Training) Ashok Kumar and will conclude on Sept 3. "During the expedition, members will collect garbage from camps on the peaks as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and bring it down for proper disposal. It also aims to pay tribute to mountaineers who lost their lives during a similar expedition in Leh's Nubra Valley in 1995," Kothiyal added.
