
Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 Touring road test: Fast, fine-tuned fun at your fingertips
No other offering holds a candle to Porsche's visceral 911 GT3. Eschewing turbochargers, hybrid systems and unnecessary computerised complexities, the GT3 has an unfiltered, organic quality that sets it apart from the pack. Porsche started the GT3 dynasty in 1999 with the 996-generation 911 GT3, and it has preserved the undiluted high-performance ethos with each successive iteration of the car. Marking the 25th anniversary of the GT3 is the 992.2 edition of the sports car, with Porsche breaking from tradition by launching the GT3 and GT3 with Touring Package simultaneously. The latter foregoes the regular GT3's enormous protruding rear wing in lieu of an integrated active wing that recedes into the bodywork, creating a more understated look. As before, at the heart of the GT3 is a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six power plant that joyfully sings its way to 9,000rpm. Porsche also stands alone in offering customers a choice of manual and dual-clutch auto transmissions. Although retaining the essence of its 992 predecessor, the 992.2 edition of the GT3 gains a substantially reworked power train, along with revised aero, 8 per cent shorter overall gearing in both manual and PDK versions and fettled steering and suspension that makes for even sharper and more tactile responses. Also new is the optional Weissach Package, which offers even more custom configuration for track use. And, fulfilling a long-standing customer request, rear seats are available as an option for the first time, albeit specifically with the Touring Package. The GT3 and GT3 Touring are now available to order in the UAE, priced from Dh801,800, but I tried out the pair at the international media launch in Valencia, Spain. I first slotted into a white GT3 with the Weissach Package, with the tight and twisty Circuit Ricardo Tormo beckoning. The event programme only allowed for five laps each, but there's a beautiful tactility to the 992.2 GT3 and a level of communicativeness that makes its dynamic envelope very quickly accessible. It's pure joy. The GT3 feels like a living being connected to your fingertips, soles of your feet and torso. There's an aliveness to every element, so much so that pedalling it hard is an almost sacred experience. No one does electrically assisted power steering better than Porsche, and that reaches a new high in the GT3, which serves up the most nuanced feedback to your fingertips imaginable. You feel every surface change and minute undulation in the tarmac below. As the cornering and braking thresholds are approached, I could feel the GT3 begin to subtly dance and squirm under hard braking in the way that only 911s do. There is a lovely adjustability to the car, which means you can use the brakes, throttle and steering to set up your line through corners, even if you might have dived into the bend a little bit hot. The huge carbon-ceramic discs provide powerful stopping power and, in the 992.2 GT3, the front ball joint of the lower trailing arm sits lower on the front axle to create an anti-dive effect that reduces pitching under braking. Back in the pit paddock after my five-lap track quota, it was time to hit the road in the GT3 with Touring Package. I nabbed a six-speed manual to see how that would gel as a real-world proposition. Shift action in the three-pedal car was meaty and satisfying, but one of the manual's limitations soon became apparent. Out on the motorway, even a 100kph cruise in sixth gear had the flat-six engine spinning raucously at almost 3,000rpm. Even though Porsche has attached a Touring suffix to this car, realistically you may not entertain it for any cross-continent touring experiences as the flat-six motor busily working away behind you at middling revs becomes intrusive. I should also point out that the car's low-speed ride is distinctly jiggly and there is some noticeable gear whine in the manual as I pootled slowly through Spanish villages in third or fourth gears. Other than these minor annoyances, the GT3 and GT3 Touring are hugely entertaining on racetracks and winding mountain roads. Nothing else out there matches them for pure driver engagement and raw, unfiltered feedback.

Arab Finance: Volkswagen AG is exploring plans to produce cars in Egypt as part of a broader strategy to expand across African markets while scaling back operations in Europe, Bloomberg reported, citing Martina Biene, Managing Director at Volkswagen Group Africa. 'We are very interested in Egypt as a production hub and hopefully, we can announce a business case anytime soon,' Martina Biene said. The government sees the auto sector as a key growth driver, estimating local demand at over $8 billion annually over the next decade. Biene highlighted Egypt's appeal not only due to its large domestic market but also its strategic location for access to consumers in the wider Middle East and Africa. This contrasts with Morocco, Africa's current automotive leader, which is heavily geared toward exporting to Europe. 'In Morocco, the car business is very much focused on exporting to Europe,' Biene noted. 'We are currently not looking for expanding our footprint with plants to export to Europe, because we've just closed plants in Europe.' Volkswagen plans to reduce its German production by more than 700,000 units and cut 35,000 jobs by 2030. The company has long faced challenges in cost-sensitive regions such as Africa, India, and Southeast Asia, where it competes with leaner rivals like Toyota and Hyundai. Dubai Autodrome set to host a packed motorsport season
Dubai Autodrome General Manager Faisal Al Sahlawi has said the new 2025-26 motorsport season will be one of its busiest after reflecting on an 'incredible' milestone campaign that attracted a record-breaking attendance at 24H Dubai during its 20th anniversary celebrations. Dubai Autodrome recently closed out its season after hosting more than 15 racing competitions over the last six months. Among the events that took place include the annual endurance motorsport competition, 24H Dubai, which saw more than 70 teams, including the largest GT3, as well as the fifth Asian Le Mans, Formula Regional Middle East Championship, Formula 4 Middle East Championship, Formula Woman Nations Cup and other several regional motorsport events. Furthermore, the venue held more than 80 motorcycle and car track days, and 20 roll racing events for the local community. The season was part of Dubai Autodrome's 20th anniversary, which was celebrated at the 24H Dubai, and Sahlawi believes the upcoming season which will start in October solidifies the venue as a leading destination for motorsport and entertainment in the region. He said: 'We are very pleased with the recent motorsport season, which coincided with the 20-year celebrations of Dubai Autodrome. Overall, there was exciting and competitive racing on the track with bigger grids and an array of top international and regional drivers in action, while off the track, there was a record number of spectators for the 24H Dubai with more than 30,000 attendees for this flagship event. This shows that motorsport is growing in the UAE and is going from strength to strength, which bodes well for the future.' He added: 'Planning is already underway for the new 2025-26 season, and it will be one of the busiest seasons at Dubai Autodrome, as we have the Gulf Historic back, where iconic 1960s cars and historic F1 cars from the 70s and 80s will all be on display, as well as top racing on the track. 'There will also be four international races, including the 24H Dubai, and an array of top regional and local motorsport competitions where we expect to have a greater number of participants during the course of the season.' Off the track, Dubai Autodrome's motorsport season is also contributing to the country's economic growth. Al Sahzlawi said: 'Overall, we had approximately more than 55,000 people be part of our motorsport events from race teams, drivers, and officials, and that saw airlines, hotels and hospitality services benefit greatly, especially with their families and friends also travelling. 'Not only are we pleased to be playing our part to support the UAE's growth beyond the motorsport races but is also a testament to the success of Union Properties' vision of enhancing Dubai Autodrome's position as a leading motorsport hub in the region.'

ROWLAND SECURES HOME WIN FOR NISSAN IN TOKYO E-PRIX ROUND 9
Nissan's Oliver Rowland secured the race win in the 2025 Tokyo E-Prix Round 9, his fourth victory of the season and on home soil for the Japanese marque. The polesitter had slipped to sixth during a late jump for ATTACK MODE, but he was able to make the final few seconds of his last mandatory 50kW four-wheel drive boost count as he sliced by then-leader, reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein. The Porsche driver squeezed Rowland on the defence between Turns 15 and 16 but was unable to hold on. Three poles, two podiums and now the race win in Formula E's three races in the Japanese capital so far for Rowland – much to the delight of many in the grandstands donning Nissan red. Wehrlein would have to settle for second following that late move despite his best efforts to cling to P1, while Dan Ticktum (CUPRA KIRO) was left ruing a late appearance by the Safety Car which scuppered his chances of bettering what was to be a maiden podium. It could have been more, with the Brit holding energy in-hand over the duo ahead, but Ticktum would be more than happy to secure his first Formula E silverware – and the team's best result since Mexico City, 2018. Jake Dennis (Andretti) made stealthy progress through the pack with consummate use of ATTACK MODE and some smart moves on the way to fourth, up from 14th on the grid at lights out. Lucas di Grassi followed up a strong showing in qualifying for Lola Yamaha ABT with a fighting fifth at the flag while Jean-Eric Vergne rounded out the top six for DS PENSKE. Rowland stretches his legs even further as the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship passes its halfway mark. He's now sitting pretty on 161 points to Wehrlein's 84, the largest Championship lead in Formula E history at the half-way point. Nissan leads Porsche in both the Teams' and the Manufacturers' World Championships as Formula E heads next to a double-header in Shanghai, China on 31 May & 1 June. Oliver Rowland, No. 23, Nissan Formula E Team said: 'No words! I was not a master of strategy in the first half of the race, I was pretty disappointed in myself. But I figured out that everybody would kind of undercut me so I thought: 'I've got six minutes, I'll undercut them' and in the end it worked. I knew they would all react. I just had to make the progress on the first lap so it paid off today, but I was a bit lucky. I've always said that in Tokyo and Shanghai I need to keep pushing to extend the Championship lead. Going into Shanghai I'll have the same approach this year and then maybe after that we can start to think about the lead we've got.'
