Sheryl Swoopes Criticizes Decision by Caitlin Clark's Fever Coach
The 2025 WNBA season is right around the corner, and anticipation is building. Fans are buzzing — and even legends like three-time MVP Sheryl Swoopes are getting in on the excitement.
Swoopes appeared on the latest episode of "The Women's Hoops Show," where she discussed the topics around the WNBA, including the Indiana Fever's latest move: cutting rookie guard Bree Hall.

Swoopes hasn't shied away from speaking her mind, as last season she raised questions about the legitimacy of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark's college scoring record.
During the recent episode, Swoopes questioned Fever head coach Stephanie White's decision to give veterans like Lexie Hull and Sophie Cunningham minutes over Hall and then cut her without giving her a fair opportunity to prove herself.
In the first preseason game against the Washington Mystics, Hall didn't see the court at all.
"Even though the starters weren't in, like Sophie Cunningham and Lexi Hull, they've been in the league for a while," Swoopes said. "You actually had players like Bree Hall. Why wasn't she in that game, per se? If you are still trying to figure out who's going to make the team, who you're going to cut. So I was a little confused with what Steph [White] was doing."

Swoopes then went on to share her viewpoint on the preseason, emphasizing that it's about evaluating players a coach may be unsure of, rather than the ones already returning.

"But to me, when I think about preseason, it really isn't so much for your players that you know are returning, the players that you know are gonna make the team," Swoopes added.
"But it's more about, I'm not sure about this particular player. Let me get her in a real-life game situation and see how she handles that. But I'm also gonna probably play her a few minutes with my starters to see how that looks, how that works."
Hall was drafted 20th overall by the Fever last month and spent just three weeks with the team. Although she didn't play in the first preseason game, she logged minutes in the second — a 64-point blowout win over the Brazil national team. She played 16:25, finishing with nine points, four rebounds and no assists.

WNBA Makes Big Nneka Ogwumike Announcement on Saturday
WNBA Makes Big Nneka Ogwumike Announcement on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. All eyes were on United Center on Friday night as the Chicago Sky hosted a Caitlin Clark-less Indiana Fever side in their second meeting of the season. The Fever sent a strong statement by blowing out the Sky again, 79-52, to go 2-0 in their season series. Advertisement There was another game on the docket, though, as the Seattle Storm and the Phoenix Mercury battled it out following the marquee Fever-Sky matchup. History was made in the Storm-Mercury game, too, with former WNBA Most Valuable Player Nneka Ogwumike marking another historic career milestone. The league took to social media to announce that Ogwumike has climbed to the No. 8 spot in the WNBA's all-time steals list with 628. This is yet another feather added to Ogwumike's cap as the 6-foot-2 forward continues to rewrite the WNBA history books. Ogwumike, 34, has nine All-Star nods to her name, seven All-Defensive team appearances, a seven-time All-WNBA forward and, of course, has a WNBA title under her belt. Advertisement Ogwumike is off to a strong start to the season as well, averaging 16.5 points on 50.0% shooting, 9.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals entering Saturday's game against the Mercury. Seattle will need their star to be at her best again this season as it looks to compete for a playoff spot. The Storm headed into Saturday's matchup with a 4-4 record, and they haven't exactly established themselves as one of the strongest contenders for this year's title. However, if Ogwumike is able to keep her foot on the gas, it would be foolish to count the Storm out. WNBA Star Slams Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in Candid Rebuke
WNBA Star Slams Commissioner Cathy Engelbert in Candid Rebuke originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The WNBA schedule has come under fire from fans and analysts alike, who contend that the expanded 44-game slate, combined with shared arenas, creates brutal back-to-back road trips, cuts into critical recovery time, dilutes marquee matchups and ultimately jeopardizes both player health and fan engagement. Advertisement Now, Phoenix Mercury forward and WNBPA representative Satou Sabally has joined the chorus of critics, directly challenging Commissioner Cathy Engelbert after Saturday's 89–77 loss to the Seattle Storm. Sabally lamented, 'Cathy added a lot of games. And us as players, recovery is so important. We put our bodies on the line every single time. We had nine games in 18 days. It's not really responsible for a commissioner.' WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert talks to the media.© Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images "I think other teams have like three back-to-back. So it's just a lot of things that we could clean up in terms of scheduling," She added. Sabally stressed that consistent access to top-tier recovery tools and collaboration between the league and its players are essential for sustainable competition. Advertisement "Nine games in 18 days. How much can you recover? How fast can you recover? Obviously, we have a great staff, and I trust in that. But in previous years, it did look different for me." Sabally said. 'Just making sure that all teams supply the necessary recovery tools, treat professionals as professionals, and that the league works with players instead of simply throwing us out there,' she added, underscoring that player welfare must be a priority if the WNBA hopes to maintain both its growth trajectory and its competitive integrity. Sabally's comments intensify calls for reform, prompting fans and analysts to urge the league to revisit its schedule, safeguarding player well-being. The WNBA is yet to respond. Hailey Van Lith Makes Promise After Loss to Indiana Fever
Hailey Van Lith Makes Promise After Loss to Indiana Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following a 35-point loss to the Indiana Fever in their 2025 WNBA season opener, Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh promised that the loss to the Caitlin Clark-led team would not define their season. Advertisement Three weeks later, the Sky have a 2-5 record after getting blown out again by the Fever at home 79-52 on Saturday, even though Indiana was playing without Clark. To make matters worse, Chicago lost veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot to an apparent lower body injury in the first quarter of the game. The shaken Sky team finished the game with just 11 assists on 18 made baskets while shooting 32.1 percent from the field. In the postgame press conference, it was Hailey Van Lith's turn to make a big promise to the fans. Chicago Sky guard Hailey Van Lith (2) drives to the basket against Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson (51).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images "It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of your teammates and someone who means so much to us as Sloot does to our team and this organization," Van Lith said of Vandersloot's injury. Advertisement A first-round draft pick out of TCU in 2025, Van Lith is likely to be in line for more minutes if Vandersloot remains out for an extended period of time. The 23-year-old rookie played a career-high 26 minutes against Indiana, finishing with seven points, two rebounds, zero assists and three turnovers. She left the disappointing game determined to make the most of the unfortunate circumstances facing her team. According to Marsh, Vandersloot was Chicago's "engine," averaging 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest. "Whatever's in store for the future of this team, we'll make this moment mean something in the end," Van Lith promised. Advertisement She added that she wants Chicago to see the gut-wrenching loss and Vandersloot's possible absence "change the path" of the team's season. With more minutes looking like a reality, Van Lith will have every opportunity to make her words count when the Sky return to action against the 8-0 New York Liberty on Tuesday.
