Bisleri will always remain a privately-held firm, says VC Jayanti Chauhan

Packaged water company Bisleri International "will always remain a privately-held company ", said Jayanti Chauhan , vice-chairperson of Bisleri International, and inheritor of the business founded by her father Ramesh Chauhan. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker Heir to the nearly '5,000-crore business, Chauhan has been steering Bisleri International directly for the past three years, after she declined a stake sale to the Tata Group. Chauhan said Bisleri is doubling down on investments in manufacturing, distribution and product development more than it has in the past decade. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Colombia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo While her father created India's most iconic soft drinks brands Thums Up, Limca and Gold Spot, which he later sold to Coca-Cola, the scion says she will neither take the company public nor opt for any stake sale. "I want to do this myself. As for an IPO, absolutely not. We have funds ... we will always remain a private company," she told ET in an exclusive interview on Thursday. Stating that innovation is crucial for legacy brands, she said: "We are giving Bisleri a new feel, a new look, and modernising. It's a legacy brand, yes. But you must keep innovating. Legacy gives you a head start... but you have to evolve with the market." Live Events Bisleri, which leads the packaged water market ahead of Coca-Cola's Kinley and PepsiCo's Aquafina, is investing ₹600 crore this year, compared to ₹850 crore over the past decade, on six new plants for capacity expansion, wider distribution, product development and marketing. The '25,000-crore packaged water market is teeming with unorganised players and counterfeits, many of which ride on equity of established players with similar brand names and packaging colours, posing a serious challenge to organised players. While calling a widespread distribution network across four-lakh-plus outlets "definitely its strength", Chauhan called out to government and state agencies to accelerate a clampdown on counterfeiters of bottled water. "Public health is at stake; we need stronger laws; like why are the smaller guys changing our names and using our colours and caps and getting away with it? There's only so much we can do as a company, but the rest is in the hands of the lawmakers," she added. Faster decision making, women comprising over 25% of the company's workforce and a higher diversity ratio in terms of employees from different parts of the country are key changes in the company, she said. "It has been a big deal for us; ours was a very male-dominated company earlier," she said. "If you're a national company, you need people from different states and different backgrounds to understand how that market works; the language changes every 100 kilometres in a diverse market that is India, the food changes. So, it's very important for me to have a very diverse group of people so that they can give me feedback. Also, to connect with Gen Z, you must hire them-they are the ones who are going to tell you about what's trending, what's in fashion and bring in that youth vibe." She said while newer products are being developed, Bisleri will stay within the realm of beverages, adding that premiumisation will be a focus area, such as introducing Bisleri and Vedica Himalayan Spring water in glass bottles. The company said it has 32% share in the ₹11,000-crore organised packaged drinking water segment, manufacturing across over 135 locations and distribution across four lakh outlets. Some of the categories it is pushing apart from its mainstay water are carbonated drinks such as Limonata, POP and Spyci. In June, Bisleri inked a strategic partnership with Dubai-based Apparel Group to manufacture, market and distribute in the UAE. Oman, the rest of the Middle East and North Africa are the other countries it will tap in due course.

Coming up in Pune: AC washrooms with Wi-Fi access, charging ports

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to set up five 'VIP washrooms' at a cost of Rs 72 lakh each at the entry points of the city to address the issue of lack of high-standard restrooms. The 'VIP washrooms' will come up at Balewadi Jakatnaka, the entry point from Mumbai; Katraj, the entry point from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, and Bangalore; Wagholi, the entry point from Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, and Central India; Shewalewadi, the entry point from Solapur and Southern India; and the Swargate bus stand, which caters to commuters from all parts of the city. The fees for using these 'VIP washrooms' will be decided later. 'The locations for five VIP washrooms have been strategically planned in Pune. Many prominent people visit the city for business, family, or social events. Some come for official purposes and leave without staying in the city, often facing inconvenience when it comes to freshening up. The VIP washrooms will provide these visitors with the necessary facilities to ensure their comfort,' said Sandeep Kadam, incharge of civic solid waste management department. 'The VIP washrooms will feature air conditioning, bathing facilities, separate changing rooms, and well-maintained toilets. There will be charging points for mobile phones and laptops, as well as Wi-Fi access. Additionally, provisions will be made for men, women, and people with physical disabilities,' said Kadam. There will be a ramp for people with physical disabilities to enter the washrooms, and staff will be assigned to clean them frequently. A private agency will be responsible for the operation of the washrooms, said Kadam. Meanwhile, the PMC is refurbishing its`Ti' toilets for women at busy locations in the city. 'Ti' toilets were launched in October 2016 to address the shortage of women's restrooms in crowded public areas by repurposing old Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses. 'The Ti toilets are being repaired and will be back in service soon,' said Kadam. Ajay Jadhav is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, Pune.
