ENG Vs WI: West Indies Fined For Slow Over-Rate In 1st ODI Against England

News1801-06-2025
West Indies have been penalised for falling an over short against England in the first ODI at Birmingham.
The West Indies have been fined for a slow over-rate during the first one-day international against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Thursday. Shai Hope's team was found to be one over short of the required target.
Match Referee Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel imposed a fine of five per cent of their match fee on each West Indies player. The ICC stated that Hope's side was one over short after time allowances were taken into consideration.
The sanction is in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences. The ICC statement added that, as per regulations, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl in the allotted time.
West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted the proposed sanction, so a formal hearing was not required.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd.
England secured a comprehensive 238-run victory, posting 400/8 thanks to half-centuries from Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethell.
The West Indies were subsequently bowled out for 162 as Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton claimed three wickets apiece.
England will be without all-rounder Jamie Overton for the remainder of the white-ball series. He has been ruled out due to a broken right little finger. Matthew Potts has been named as his replacement and is poised to make his tenth ODI appearance for England.
The second ODI between the two sides takes place in Cardiff on Sunday. A victory in Cardiff would guarantee a series win for England with one match to spare.

How Canada U-19 beat Argentina U-19 after batting for just 5 balls in 50-over game

The game of cricket often witnesses many skewed match-ups and dominant wins, and one such mind-boggling result transpired when the Canada Under-19 side bowled out Argentina Under-19 for just 23 runs before chasing down the target in just five deliveries during Match 4 of the ICC Men's U19 Cricket World Cup Americas Qualifier 2025 on Sunday. Batting first, the Argentina Under-19 side was skittled out for 23 in 19.4 overs by the Canada Under-19 side at the Param Veer Sports Complex (Ground 2) in Georgia. In an astonishing show while chasing 24, all Canada took was just five deliveries to finish the game with 10 wickets and 49.1 overs remaining. Opener Dharm Patel started the innings with a single before skipper Yuvraj Samra finished things off in the next four deliveries, all for boundaries. Argentina's Franz Bur, who bowled five deliveries and gave away three extras in wides, was hit for two fours and as many sixes by Samra as Canada won with 295 balls remaining. For Argentina, not a single batter reached double figures, with as many as seven of them recording ducks in this innings, and out of the 23 runs which they scored, seven came from extras. The wrecker in chief for Canada was bowler Jagmandeep Paul, who recorded an astronomical figure of 5-3-7-6 which had three maidens. The Argentina vs. Canada match did not have Youth ODI status; otherwise, Canada would have set several records after their 10-wicket victory. In Youth ODIs, the lowest team total ever recorded is Scotland's 22 against Australia in the 2004 Under-19 World Cup. On that occasion, Australia chased down the target in just 3.5 overs, a record that still stands for the fastest chase in terms of overs remaining in the format. USA's Atlanta is hosting the ICC Men's U19 Cricket World Cup 2026 Americas regional Qualifier from 7 to 17 August, where Argentina, Bermuda and Canada are playing apart from USA. It is a double round-robin format where the top team will book their place as the Americas regional representative at the ICC Men's U19 Cricket World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe. Sixteen teams will contend for the ICC Men's U19 Cricket World Cup between January and February 2026 across five venues in Zimbabwe and Namibia. Teams will be split into four groups of four teams each will compete in the Group Stage, followed by the Super 6, ending in the semi-finals and Final.

Will Ashwin Join RR As Part Of Samson's Trade Deal? Ex-India Spinner Gives Big Update

Last Updated: Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by CSK in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the cash-rich league this year, he played nine matches but was only able to take 7 wickets. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was part of the Chennai Super Kings' team in IPL 2025. He was signed for Rs 9.75 crore by the Chennai-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and in the 18th edition of the world's richest franchise cricket league, he picked up seven wickets in nine matches for them in addition to scoring 32 runs with the bat. Ashwin's performance by his own standards was a very forgettable one in the IPL this year, and as a result there were talks about CSK releasing him ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. It was reported last week that Ashwin has asked CSK to release him, and there were also reports that he could join Rajasthan Royals, for whom he played from 2022 to 2024, as part of a trade deal for Sanju Samson. When asked if he is going to be part of CSK in the IPL next year by Vimal Kumar, Ashwin said, 'Mere hath mein kuch nahi hai. Maine sirf clarity manga hai… mera abhi communication kuch hua nahi hai. Clarity toh maine bahut pehle he manga. Maine kya kiya, mera role kaisa hai, mai kaise better kar sakta hu – ye sab sawal maine already puch liya hai kyuki maine last year 9 games khela tha. In all these years of playing in the IPL, that was the first year jisme maine sirf 9 games khela. Hamesha mein har game khela tha, jo bhi franchise ke liye mai khela. So clarity meri taraf se manga maine; IPL ke time par he mang liya tha." 'Abhi tak mujhe koi information nahi hai. Classified information nahi hai ki Sanju idhar (CSK) aa raha hai aur mai udhar (RR) ja raha hu." If CSK decide to trade Samson ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, then the Chennai-based team will have to sign him for Rs 18 crore – the price for which Samson was retained by RR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Or they can trade him in a player deal, but for that Ashwin won't be enough because Samson's price in IPL 2025 was Rs 18 crore, whereas Ashwin was signed for Rs 9.75 crore. CSK will have to give Rs 8.25 crore more to RR in addition to Ashwin or include players worth Rs 8.25 crore more to acquire Samson's services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Riyan Parag Is The Reason'! Ex-CSK Star Ponders Why Sanju Samson Is Leaving RR

Last Updated: S Badrinath suggests Riyan Parag's influence in Rajasthan Royals may have led Sanju Samson to request a release. Parag led RR in IPL 2025 when Samson was injured. Former India batter S Badrinath has suggested that Riyan Parag's growing influence within the Rajasthan Royals (RR) setup may be the key reason behind reports of Sanju Samson requesting a release from the franchise. On his YouTube channel, Badrinath highlighted that Parag not only led RR in the first three matches of IPL 2025 but also took over as captain when Samson was sidelined with an abdominal injury. Badrinath remarked that considering Parag for captaincy might be the reason for Samson's departure, questioning the leadership decisions of RR. 'I feel Riyan Parag is the reason. If you consider him for captaincy, how do you expect someone like Samson to stay?" Badrinath, who has played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel. How Can Sanju Samson Even Fit In At CSK? He further speculated on Samson's potential future if he were to join CSK, noting that while Samson could be a suitable replacement for MS Dhoni, fitting him into the playing XI could be challenging. With established players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ayush Mhatre, and Dewald Brevis in the top and middle order, opportunities in Samson's preferred batting positions might be limited. Badrinath pointed out that Samson prefers to play in the top three or four positions and is unlikely to fit in at number five or six, where CSK already have strong players. He expressed doubts about CSK making a trade similar to Mumbai Indians' for Hardik Pandya, questioning if CSK could accommodate Samson in their playing XI even if he joins. 'If Sanju Samson does come to CSK, then he could be the like-for-like replacement for MS Dhoni. Samson is a batter who can bat in the top three or four spots in the batting order. He is not someone who could fit in the number five or six spot in the playing XI. CSK are strong in those areas of the playing XI. Mhatre is settled, Gaikwad is settled, Brevis is settled," Badrinath said. 'I am not sure if CSK would do a transaction like MI did to get Hardik Pandya from GT. So even if Sanju Samson comes in, the question remains whether CSK can fit him into the playing XI," he added. Samson has been a cornerstone for RR, featuring in 149 matches, scoring over 4,000 runs, and holding franchise records for both appearances and total runs. However, injuries impacted his 2025 campaign, causing him to miss five matches during which Parag took over as captain. RR's season ended disappointingly, finishing second from the bottom with only four wins. Samson's most recent international appearance came in February against England. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
