Egypt FM reviews Gaza ceasefire efforts in call with EU official - Foreign Affairs
According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, both sides discussed the developments in the Gaza Strip, where the Egyptian FM emphasised the necessity of ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid amid the humanitarian crisis in the strip.
He also informed the EU Commissioner of Egypt's preparations to host, in collaboration with the Palestinian government and the UN, the International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire agreement is reached.
The Egyptian FM stressed the important role of the EU and its member states in this regard, given that the EU is the largest donor to the Palestinian National Authority.

During the call, the top Egyptian diplomat also praised the progress witnessed in Egypt-EU relations and the efforts by both sides in implementing the six pillars of the comprehensive strategic partnership.
He welcomed the efforts made by the European Commissioner and her support in securing the European Parliament and Council's approval of the second tranche of the macro-financial assistance package to Egypt.
The package, mounting to €4 billion, targets supporting Egypt's efforts in facing multiple economic and developmental challenges amid regional and international instability.
Abdelatty expressed Egypt's keenness to further enhance economic, investment, and trade relations with the EU across various sectors, in light of the Egyptian government's efforts to attract foreign investments.
The call also addressed the issue of migration. The Egyptian FM stressed the importance of linking migration with development and addressing the root causes of irregular migration.
He underscored the need to strengthen the partnership in the area of regular migration and to support European investments in Egypt in ways that contribute to job creation.

China Responds to EU Ban with Restrictions on Medical Device Imports
Taarek Refaat In an escalating trade dispute, China has announced new restrictions on the purchase of medical devices from the European Union, signaling a retaliatory move against EU sanctions imposed last month. The new measures, which will impact government purchases of medical devices valued at over 45 million yuan (approximately $6.3 million), come amid heightened tensions between the two economic giants. The move follows the European Commission's decision in June to block Chinese companies from participating in public tenders for medical equipment worth nearly €60 billion ($70 billion) annually. The EU's ban on Chinese companies, implemented through the EU's international procurement mechanism which took effect in 2022, was designed to promote reciprocal access to markets. This mechanism aims to ensure that the European Union enjoys equal access to foreign public procurement markets, particularly with countries that impose restrictions on EU businesses. At the heart of this policy shift was the desire for fairness in international trade, a sentiment echoed by European officials at the time. However, the move quickly drew ire from Beijing, which saw it as a violation of the principles of open market access. In a separate statement, China's Ministry of Commerce expressed regret over the escalating conflict, stating, 'Despite China's goodwill and flexibility, the European Union insisted on imposing new restrictions and erecting protective barriers.' The ministry also emphasized that the Chinese government had 'no choice but to adopt similar measures in retaliation.' China's response underscores the growing economic rivalry between the two entities, as trade disputes between them intensify. This marks the latest in a series of retaliatory measures that Beijing has taken against European sanctions, particularly in the wake of EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. The Chinese Ministry of Finance further elaborated on the scope of the new restrictions, revealing that they would extend to medical devices imported from other countries, provided that more than 50% of their components are of European origin. The new regulations are set to take effect immediately. However, Beijing clarified that medical products manufactured by European companies within China would be exempt from these measures, reflecting China's ongoing efforts to balance trade retaliation with its role as a global manufacturing hub. In a parallel move, China imposed additional tariffs of up to 34.9% on European brandy, particularly targeting French cognac, for a period of five years. This action is widely seen as another retaliatory gesture in response to the EU's electric vehicle tariffs. Egypt's PM Urges BRICS Nations to Focus on Common Interests, Collective Action to Address Challenges
Taarek Refaat In a key speech delivered on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to confront pressing global challenges. Speaking on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Madbouly participated in the 'Peace, Security, and Global Governance Reform' session, underlining the importance of multilateralism, sustainable development, and peacebuilding. The working luncheon, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, served as a platform for discussing vital issues surrounding global security, peace, and governance reform. Prime Minister Madbouly began by thanking President da Silva for the opportunity to engage in these critical conversations, particularly in light of the increasingly complex geopolitical climate. Addressing Crisis and Multilateralism Madbouly outlined the intertwining crises facing the world today, with a particular focus on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been exacerbated by ongoing Israeli military actions. He also highlighted the broader impact of these hostilities, which have extended to neighboring regions, including Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. He underscored that these developments reinforce the urgency of strengthening multilateral cooperation, supporting international law, and reinforcing the role of the United Nations in promoting peace and security. 'The catastrophic humanitarian situation we witness today, especially in Gaza, is a stark reminder of why multilateralism and respect for international law are more crucial than ever,' said Madbouly. 'It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the principles enshrined in the UN Charter guide the future of global governance.' Egypt's Role in Promoting Regional Peace The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to emphasize Egypt's longstanding commitment to regional and global peace efforts. He highlighted Egypt's strategic role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction across Africa and the Middle East. In particular, he pointed to Egypt's leadership in addressing regional challenges through diplomatic mediation and capacity building. 'Since 2019, President El-Sisi has served as the African Union Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development. This reflects Egypt's deep engagement in promoting peace and stability on the African continent,' Madbouly remarked. 'We have developed extensive experience in mediation, dialogue, and reconciliation processes.' Madbouly also referenced the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, which has been instrumental in resolving violent conflicts since its founding in 1994. The center's work focuses on mediation, negotiation, and supporting national reconciliation efforts, alongside enhancing local communities' capacity to address emerging security threats. In addition to Egypt's role in regional peacekeeping, Madbouly highlighted the importance of sustainable development as a cornerstone for conflict prevention. 'We must address the root causes of conflict, particularly poverty, and ensure that sustainable development is a key focus,' he stated. He also outlined Egypt's launch of the Aswan Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development in 2019, which provides an important platform for discussing the interconnectedness between peace and development. The forum encourages African-led solutions to peace and security challenges, with the next session scheduled for October 2025 in Aswan. In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized the importance of collaboration between BRICS nations and beyond, urging that 'we must strengthen our cooperation, focus on common interests, and work together to overcome the current challenges and fulfill the aspirations of our peoples.' With global instability on the rise and the urgency for peace-building ever more apparent, Madbouly's call for multilateralism and collective action serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts of Egypt to shape a more peaceful and sustainable global order.
