CUEPACS opposes hiring of foreign nurses for govt hospitals
Its president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat, said that the proposal was inappropriate, as many local nursing graduates, including those promoted through the Promotion by Appointment (PSL) scheme, are still waiting for permanent or contract placements, with some having waited as long as eight months.
He added that local nurses have undergone rigorous training, based on standards set by the Ministry of Health (MOH), and hiring foreign nurses who may not meet these standards could compromise the quality of public healthcare services.
'Job opportunities in the public service sector should be prioritised for locals before considering the hiring of foreign workers, in line with the government's policy of putting citizens first,' he said in a statement, today.
Adnan added that local nurses are more attuned to the country's culture, religion and social sensitivities, which helps minimise communication barriers, supports treatment practices aligned with local values, and fosters better relationships with patients and their families.
CUEPACS, he said, hopes that MOH will focus on expediting the appointment process for local nurses, and implement long-term measures, such as increasing nurse trainee intake at MOH training institutions, expanding PSL opportunities, and enhancing incentives and facilities for local nurses.
He added that CUEPACS is also prepared to engage with MOH to find the best solution to address the current nurse shortage, without compromising employment opportunities and the welfare of local nurses.
On Tuesday, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru proposed strategic cooperation with hospitals in Malaysia to allow Indonesian nurses to serve in the country, noting that nearly 70 per cent of international patients in Johor, Melaka, Penang and Kuala Lumpur are from Indonesia. — BERNAMA

Perlis Raja Muda joins 1,800 in Eco Fun Run at Bukit Lagi
KANGAR: The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, participated in the seven-kilometre Eco Fun Run at Bukit Lagi geosite today. The event was held as part of the Healthy Carnival for All, aimed at fostering community health and environmental awareness. Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, and their son Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Al-Haj Jamalullail also took part in the run. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad joined the event, which saw around 1,800 participants. More than 2,000 online ads removed after MCMC, MoH crackdown on banned products
Foto & Video: Najmi Nor'Azam JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed 2,033 online advertisements promoting banned products and services up to Aug 1 this year, following a surge in public complaints. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the takedowns were carried out in cooperation with the Health Ministry (MoH) and other agencies after MCMC received 2,283 complaints during the period. The crackdown began in 2022, when only eight such ads were removed. In 2023, MCMC took down 390 illegal ads from 439 complaints. This year saw a sharp rise, with 3,312 complaints and 1,643 ads already removed before the latest action. "MoH has the expertise to identify fake medicines or unapproved health services. "If we receive public complaints, we will verify them with MoH before instructing social media platforms to take down the ads," Teo said after launching the Johor leg of the Geran Digital PMKS Madani Festival 2025 in Permas Jaya today. She said that the clampdown aims to protect consumers from fraudulent health claims and unsafe services.
