WWE breaks 23-year tradition with fans shocked over 'mind blowing' twist
Last night, for the first time ever, a TNA Wrestling championship was defended on WWE television – and viewers tuning into NXT Battleground were stunned after a major twist.
History was made in the main event as Trick Williams stole the win from TNA Wrestling World Champion Joe Hendry, meaning for the first time in its 23-year history, TNA's top title is now held by a WWE contracted superstar.
Although the TNA Title itself has only been active since 2007, the company used the TNA World Heavyweight Championship for its first five years.
It's a massive step in the partnership between WWE and TNA, and fans couldn't believe what they were seeing as Sunday's show went off air.
'A WWE superstar is TNA world champion.. I never thought I'd see something like this in my lifetime,' wrote @Formersoccerfan on X.
A second fan, @TheDanHuelsman, added: 'The TNA Champion is a WWE Wrestler. Unreal times….'
Another viewer, @HeelBalor, tweeted: 'Honestly, my mind is blown but in a good way kind of way this is insane. A WWE wrestler is now the TNA world heavyweight champion just WOW!'
'Is a WWE superstar now the TNA champion???? What is going on??? Rules have been broken,' raved @Lux00__, with @jackbeeton2002 saying: 'Never thought I'll see the day a wwe wrestler is a tna champion wow (sic)'
'Yo I can't believe that the TNA Champion is a WWE wrestler… 🤯🤯,' @2crack_17 added, and @JcAponte_35 said: 'A WWE wrestler is TNA world champion… weird timeline to be in #wwebattelground (sic)'
TNA President Carlos Silva was on the front row at Battleground, and took to X afterwards to offer his congratulations while hinting at future plans in the pipeline.
'Congrats Trick. Make sure you take care of that belt,' he wrote, before adding: 'I'll see you in the TNA office tomorrow.'
Fans have had a hint of what's to come, with TNA Wrestling star Mike Santana revealed earlier in the show that he would be waiting to challenge whoever walked out as champion.
The result is also interesting when it comes to the future of Hendry himself, who has caught fire with WWE fans this year, including a shock WrestleMania match with Randy Orton last month. More Trending
There has been plenty of speculation about whether or not the Scottish star will making the jump from TNA to WWE when his contract is up – and a decision could be made sooner rather than later.
'Who knows what's gonna happen next. I'm in my contract year right now, it's a very exciting time,' he recently told Chris Van Vliet on Insight.

Butterbean is back for one last night in the squared-circle after a remarkable body transformation which saw him shift more than 200lbs, and there are several top-tier opponents on his radar Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, and John Fury are among the names that Butterbean hopes to face as he plots a surprise return to the world of boxing. The 58-year-old, real name Eric Esch, hasn't fought since his 2013 TKO loss to Kirk Lawton, and his inactivity has led to other battles on the other side of the ropes for the Atlanta-born bruiser. While he usually weighed in for his bouts between 300 and 400lbs, inactivity saw his mass skyrocket past the 500lb mark, and he subsequently became dependent on a wheelchair for mobility. What followed was also a dark and deep-seated depression that left him bedridden for the best part of a year. But with the help of WWE superstar 'Diamond' Dallas Page and his incredible yoga programme, Butterbean could once again find self-belief and turn his life around - shedding more than 200lbs and feeling fitter now than he did in his 20s. And now, the pugilist is even ready to return to the squared circle for one last dance under the bright lights, throwing down the gauntlet to the likes of Tyson, Paul, and Fury. Here, Mirror Fighting breaks down three opponents that Butterbean named on his radar during an exclusive interview via Lucky Energy... Mike Tyson Talks of a fight between Butterbean and Tyson taking place are nothing new, with whispers of a mega-fight between the two originally emerging in 2020. Butterbean claims that 'Iron' Mike's team initially approached him five years ago for the prospect of a bout, but he ultimately had to dismiss it due to his battles with weight and mental health. He explained: "The reason I turned down, because I couldn't walk. He had a fight fall out and they reached out to me. I don't know which camp reached out, but when you can't walk, you're in a wheelchair, you can't fight." However, after shedding the weight and eyeing a return to the ring, Butterbean has now thrown out an offer to Tyson, 59, who recently made his own comeback to the sport to take on YouTuber-turned-scrapper Paul in November, in a fight he lost via unanimous decision. He explained: "But guess what? I'm not in a wheelchair no more. I went and moved to DDP for a while, did his yoga programme, and I'm in the best shape of my life right now. I feel better now at 50-something than I did when I was in my 20s, which is insane. I can't explain it, but the Fountain of Youth, I dove in it and I come out so much better." Highlighting a weakness in the former world heavyweight champion, he added: "You know, Tyson don't have a chin. People don't realise that. Mike cannot take a punch. "He's normally so quick, people don't hit him that much. But I spar with Buster Mathis Jr, they have the exact same style. They've been trained by the same people. And I had no trouble hitting him." Jake Paul Despite running an offer to Tyson, Butterbean has made it incredibly clear that 28-year-old Paul would be his first choice opponent for a return to the ring. The hard-hitting heavyweight has targeted the up-and-comer time and time again since slimming down substantially, claiming that Paul bad-mouthed him when he was in a wheelchair. He said: "As soon as he says yes, I'm ready. You know, I was in really bad shape. I was in a wheelchair for over three years. I couldn't walk. I got over 500 pounds. I was fat and sloppy and couldn't walk, and Jake wanted to talk bad about me then. "So, I decided to get my fat butt in shape. And guess what I did? I'm 280 right now, 285. I've never been under 300 in my life that I know of. And now that I'm ready, he's like, 'Well, dude, you're a legend. I can't fight you right now.' Yeah, buddy. Let's get it going.' On his keys to victory, Butterbean added: "I don't think he's afraid of me, but I think his people know that if he gets knocked out, his career's over. Like, I would knock him out bad. I hit way too hard for him." He continued: "Needless to say, Jake was a joke in the beginning. Just another YouTuber out there trying to prove a point. He's got a lot better. So I wouldn't mind sharing the ring with just to fight him. Not just to shut him out because I think he was worthless, but he kind of p***ed me off." With a record of 12-1 in the squared-circle, Paul has achieved a number of big-name wins over the likes of Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, Mike Perry and Tyson to name a few. His latest win came in the form of a unanimous decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the end of June - a man who has previously held the WBC middleweight title. John Fury In a shocking turn of events, Butterbean also called out John Fury, the father of former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, during his interview, while also revealing that a fight was on the table between the two in the past. Asked about if he would take a fight with the recently retired Tyson, he said: "I'd love to fight him," before turning his attention to John. He continued: "I'd fight the old man first, beat him up, slap around him pretty good. And then I'd want to beat the son up pretty bad. I would love to fight Tyson Fury. You know, I was offered to fight his dad. And it's been a while back. "I'd love to fight him, either one of them. But yeah, Tyson Fury is the one I'd really want. His dad would be an easy fight. That'd be a couple rounder. I'd be like, go out there and just have fun and then get ready for the son. It'd be a warm-up fight. I mean, now that I believe in myself, I can do anything. And since I'm in such great shape, I know I can accomplish my goals." With a professional career between 1987 and 1995 culminating in eight wins, four losses and one draw, John is no stranger to the trials and tribulations of boxing, especially given he has worked as a long-time coach for his son, Tyson. Hulk Hogan's son pays tribute to 'greatest dad in the world' in emotional post
Nick posted a carousel of pictures of him and his dad over the years and thanked everyone for reaching out during this "overwhelming and extremely difficult" time Hulk Hogan's son has paid tribute to his father in a heartbreaking post, following his sudden death earlier this week. The wrestling icon,whose real name is Terry Bollea, died on Thursday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at his Clearwater mansion in Florida. Reports claim that medics were sent to Hulk's home after getting a call regarding someone suffering an alleged cardiac arrest. Hulk was 71 years old. Hulk shared two children – daughter, Brooke and son Nick – with ex wife Linda Hogan. Days after Hulk's death, Nick posted a carousel of pictures of him and his dad and thanked everyone for reaching out during this "overwhelming and extremely difficult" time. Nick wrote, "Hearing so many kind words and stories about my dad's life, interactions and experiences with everyone has been incredible and comforting. "My dad was the most incredible person I've ever known and will always be my hero. He was the most kind, loving and amazing father anybody could ask for. I feel so blessed to have had the greatest dad in the world. He was not only the best dad but also my mentor and my best friend. "He always has been my best friend and I love him and miss him more than I could ever explain. I thanked him for everything he has ever done for me and told him how much I loved him and hugged him every chance I got. I spent a lot of time with him the past few years after moving back to Florida to be closer to him and I am so grateful for those memories. They are the best moments in my life. "I would do anything to have him back but I know now that he will always be watching over me. I will always remember the lessons and advice he gave me and carry on in a way that I know would make him proud. Thank you for being the best dad in the world and thank you for being my best friend. I love you so much Big Dog and I will miss you forever." On Friday, in the first live event since his death, the WWE remembered Hogan in a poignant memorial before kicking off SmackDown. Wrestling great Triple H, who now works as the company's chief content officer, paid homage to his former colleague before a traditional 10-bell salute was held in his memory. Triple H, whose real name is Paul Levesque, said: "Ladies and gentleman, yesterday we lost one of the biggest and most globally recognized icons in the world." A number of WWE figures looked visibly emotional during the 10-bell salute, including his former manager Jimmy Hart, who was seen wiping away tears. The likes of Randy Orton, Logan Paul, Charlotte Flair and Cody Rhodes were also seen paying their respects to Hogan on the stage.

Top WWE SummerSlam match at risk with top star 'blocked from entering US'
A major WWE match announced for SummerSlam 2025 is in serious jeopardy after a top superstar wasn't allowed to travel back to the United States. On the first night of the August 2 and 3 double header, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul are set to face Randy Orton and Grammy Award-winning singer Jelly Roll in a tag team match. McIntyre, known as the Scottish Warrior, has been back in the UK for a friend's wedding in England over the weekend, but he's now claimed he was stopped from boarding his flight back to the US where he has lived for a number of years. 'There's now a good chance I don't make #SummerSlam,' he captioned a video on X as he talking into his phone camera from a field. 'It's quite a week I've had. You wanna know how it's been capped off? i can't get back into America, They wouldn't let me board my flight,' he said in the video. 'I'm in England still, at my buddy's wedding – what a wedding it was. Planning to go back, train for SummerSlam, but no, no, no, no, I got blocked. **Warning – the below video includes strong language** 'Wife and I walked up to the gate, trying to check in, always goes perfectly fine. Not this time.' McIntyre noted that there was an issue with his documentation, despite never having a problem any of the other times he's been travelling. He continued: ''Drew, you don't have your US passport. I know who you are. I know you've lived there for a long time, I know you're showing me pictures of your US passport, and your global entry. ''I know exactly who you are, your property and the likes. But no, we can't let you in the country buddy. 'So my wife and I panic, we say we've got a sick animal at home, we're good people, we care about our animals, we care about people. In the end, his wife travelled back alone 'against her will' to see their pet cat, while McIntyre had to turn around and leave the airport. Ever the professional, the former world champion used the real life incident to continue his on-screen feud with Jelly Roll. 'Here I am. So what happened, what changed this trip? Jelly Roll. You know somebody, got some connections? You've got your 15 minutes of fame right now, can get away with some stuff? You're hot, soon you will not be, so you're getting it in when you can,' he quipped. 'You realised when I took off my shirt on SmackDown, you went , 'Oh my God! All that aura, I'm screwed!'
