"The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has emerged as a visionary framework, shaping the future of learning in the country. With nearly 30 crore students between the ages of 5 and 23, India's education reforms hold immense significance. The NEP aims to blend traditional values with futuristic goals, with technology at its core," he said.
"Encouragingly, its impact is now showing positive results. The National Education Policy (NEP) is effectively balancing tradition and innovation, nurturing strong roots while preparing students for the future."
According to a 2024 report by the government, the country has made significant strides in expanding its Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the total number of HEIs increased by 13.8% from 51,534 to 58,643. This growth includes a 59.6% rise in universities (from 760 to 1,213) and a 21.1% increase in colleges (from 38,498 to 46,624). Additionally, 42 new centrally funded institutions were established, including 8 Central Universities, 7 IITs, and 8 IIMs.
The expansion of HEIs has led to a substantial increase in student enrolment, with a 30.5% rise from 3.42 crore in 2014-15 to 4.46 crore in 2022-23. Notably, female enrolment grew by 38.4% from 1.57 crore to 2.18 crore, contributing to greater gender parity. Female students also made significant gains in STEM courses, with enrolment rising by 23% from 35.14 lakh to 43.03 lakh. Furthermore, the government recruited 52,482 candidates between May 2014 and October 2024, more than twice the number recruited in the previous decade.

'Don't see myself in national politics for long': Chirag Paswan on contesting Bihar assembly polls
NEW DELHI: Union minister Chirag Paswan on Monday said that he is prepared to return to state politics in Bihar, explaining that his original motivation for entering politics was to contribute to the development of Bihar. "I have said this previously, that I don't see myself in national politics for long. The only reason I came into politics was Bihar and Biharis. My vision has always been 'Bihar first, Bihari first', and I always want Bihar to prosper and be at par with other developed states," Paswan said while speaking to reporters. Paswan, who recently secured a third term as Lok Sabha MP from Hajipur, signalled that a shift in focus was necessary to fulfil his political goals. "I have realised after becoming an MP for the third time that this would not be possible in Delhi. I had expressed my wish before the party that I want to return to Bihar soon." Poll Are you supportive of Chirag Paswan's decision to prioritize Bihar's development over national politics? Yes, it's commendable No, he should focus on national issues The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief revealed that internal discussions are ongoing regarding his potential candidacy in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections . "My party is still evaluating whether my party will benefit if I contest the Vidhan Sabha elections now... by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en San Miguel De Tucumán (ver precio) Verisure Undo If my strike rate gets better and the performance of my alliance gets better, of which there are high chances, then I will definitely contest," he said. However, Paswan dismissed speculation about any chief ministerial ambitions. "There is no vacancy for the CM post in Bihar. Nitish Kumar will become the CM after the elections," he said. His party is party of the ruling alliance in Bihar, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United). The comments follow an internal push from within his party. Lok Sabha MP Arun Bharti hinted that Paswan may be asked to take on a more direct leadership role in state politics. "Chirag Paswan ji has said from every platform that Bihar is the centre of my politics... We had given him a formal proposal in the state executive meeting that he should come to Bihar and think about playing a bigger role," Bharti said, adding that a party survey would help finalise the decision. While Paswan has not officially confirmed his candidacy, he stressed his willingness to abide by the party's final call. "I will obey my party's wishes. For now, we are yet to discuss it..." he said. Paswan's re-entry into state politics could be a potential gamechanger for the NDA in the Bihar Assembly elections, expected in October or November this year. The BJP-JD(U)-LJP alliance will be aiming to return to power against the Mahagatbandhan alliance of Congress and RJD. Earlier, Jan Suraaj Party leader Prashant Kishor welcomed Paswan's possible return to Bihar politics, saying, "...He (Chirag Paswan) is a part of the NDA and every person is free to contest elections. If Chirag Paswan contests the elections, it is a good thing for Bihar... If Chirag Paswan becomes active in Bihar Assembly politics, it is a good thing."

Row Over Telangana Officer's 'Children Must Clean Toilets' Remark
New Delhi: Comments by a Telangana government official - Alagu Varsini, about Dalit students at state-run gurukuls and hostels made to do 'chores', i.e., clean their toilets and rooms and even make some of their own food - have triggered a row, with the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi demanding her transfer and the National Commission for Scheduled Caste seeking details. The NCSC on Monday issued a notice to the Telangana Chief Secretary, K Ramakrishna Rao, and the Director-General of the police, Dr Jitender, asking about the 'derogatory' comments. Replies have been sought within a fortnight. Ms Varshini's sacking has also been demanded by her predecessor, Praveen Kumar, who told NDTV, in a deeply sarcastic note, that she could first "teach the Chief Minister and his children and grandchildren holistic habits". The BRS, meanwhile, has said that Ms Varsini's comments - about children "who don't belong to posh families', a comment seen as referring to Dalit kids - is "pushing children (from that community) into the same situation as they have been for generations" rather than helping. BRS leader K Kavitha ripped into the ruling Congress, whom she also accused of stopping grants of Rs 40,000 per month to hire four temp workers per school for cleaning tasks. This, she said on X, had been set aside when the BRS of ex-Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was in power. "The Congress government has also done away with having assistant caretakers in 240 schools, forcing children to take up the role of wardens and manage kitchens. Now the officer is forcing students to clean toilets! Her statements go against the very concept of establishing gurukuls... to protect students from marginalised communities from caste and class bias..." she said. Congress government's anti-poor attitude is reflected in this shocking behaviour by an official, at Social Welfare Gurukul Society. The evidence of which is available in the audio clip !! Each social welfare school was granted Rs 40,000 per month during the BRS rule for hiring… — Kavitha Kalvakuntla (@RaoKavitha) May 28, 2025 "This behaviour is discriminatory, exploitative, and violates basic principles of child rights and dignity. It only reflects (Chief Minister) Revanth Reddy' government's anti-poor and anti-Dalit attitude! I demand the government immediately take steps to remove the officer and start giving the required funds to run social welfare schools properly," the BRS leader wrote on X. The row over Ms Varsini's comments broke late last month after an audio clip surfaced in which she was heard saying "holistic education includes teaching sanitation and personal hygiene". Ms Varsini spoke to NDTV and said that her intention was, and remains, to ensure children in her care receive an all-round education, both from books and lessons on "self-care". #NDTVExclusive | "We aim to provide holistic education " : Alagu Varsini (@Alagu19066600), Secretary, Residential Institute Society on BRS leader Kavitha's 'anti-poor' charges against Congress government, saying "kids used to clean toilets"; Congress denies charges @umasudhir — NDTV (@ndtv) May 28, 2025 "... the children come to us when they are 10 years old and leave when they are 18. In that time we want to provide a holistic education, not just a bookish education. If they enter the system at nine or 10 years old, and I make them study for nine hours and send them back, then what will they learn about self-care or cleanliness? Is education only from books? I don't think so." Last week, Ms Varsini, who is Secretary of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, called out the 'selective editing' of a speech that led to this row. The ruling Congress has hit back, meanwhile, at the BRS, accusing it of trying to undermine the development of the state and of being unable to digest the election defeat last year. #NDTVExclusive | "Kavitha not able to digest development" : Congress MP Mallu Ravi (@DrMalluRavi1) to NDTV's @umasudhir — NDTV (@ndtv) May 28, 2025 "This is a political comment by Kavitha," Congress MP Mallu Ravi told NDTV, referring to the BRS leader's X post. "I do not agree if students are washing or cleaning anything... but I don't know if this is happening. The idea is not to make students clean... it is to make them study well."
