I ordered the 'perfect' Roman maxi dress and it completely hides my tummy
A floral maxi dress that hangs beautifully never goes out of style. With a summer holiday coming up, I began the annual search to find the perfect one to hide my middle-aged lumps and bumps.
Being a little more on the larger side than I'd like to be, finding a dress that can cover my flabby arms, hide my burgeoning 'meno-belly' and still makes me feel stylish and sleek is like finding a needle in a haystack. Imagine my delight then, when a recent online order from Roman fit the brief spectacularly.
The Black Floral Print Border Maxi Dress is what I would call 'an absolute stunner'. Currently on sale for £45, Roman is offering 10% off all new seasons using cood COOL10 - taking the price down to £40.50.

Pretty as a picture, the dress is made from breathable, lightweight cotton which will hopefully help to keep the hot flushes at bay. Designed to flatter, it has a gently plunging V-neckline and 3/4 sleeves to add a little coverage on cooler days.
A beautifully intricate border floral print adds a dash of visual interest, and I'm a sucker for monochrome clothing with a shock of red as it's a good excuse to break out my favourite red lipstick. Easy to dress up or down, I'll be pairing it with a denim jacket and chunky sandals for an chic daytime look.

With a relaxed smock shape its just the right length on me, although being fairly tall at 5'9 - it might be a little too long for shorter ladies. The longer length and flattering shape hides a multitude of sins without looking like a muumuu.
I'll be keeping the Roman dress for sure, but other contenders for flattering holiday dresses include the Floral Pleated Mesh Print V-Neck Occasion Midi Dress from Next. A touch more expensive at £56, the mesh design is very pretty and the gathered waist look comfortable.
In another sale, Boden has reductions of up to 40%, featuring a selection of floral dresses that are blossoming with discounts. The Bella Puff Sleeve Maxi Dress, for example, is a tempting choice reduced from £135 to £54, in a range of colourful designs that buyers have called 'beautiful'.
Roman shoppers that love the floral print maxi dress as much as I do have left plenty of positive reviews. One stylish shopper said: "This dress is beautiful on. Lots of compliments. I'm 5ft 8inches. It was a perfect length. So comfortable too."
Another added: "Fabulous dress. Lightweight cotton means that the tiers of the dress float beautifully. The bodice fits perfectly, giving a flattering slim silhouette and the sleeves are a lovely bell shape at a perfect length."
A third was equally as impressed, adding: "This is a lovely dress fit is true to size . The dress flows around when you walk a great dress to wear for that summers day party . The fabric is good quality overall l am very pleased with this dress ."
Some buyers were concerned about the length though. One reviewer said: "A bit long, a petite length would have been good, but lovely dress."
Overall, the dress has received a 4.8 out of five-star rating with Roman shoppers, and honestly, I'd absolutely give it five stars too.
The 10% discount is available on new season items including dresses, skirts, tops and more.

Wave Hill is throwing a four-day party with free garden tours, live jazz and more
If your weekend plans don't already include a brass band, flower-making and hand-rolled ice cream—all under the glow of a Hudson River sunset— Wave Hill is about to change that. From Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8, the Bronx 's beloved public garden is throwing itself a 60th anniversary bash that's anything but stuffy. Over four packed days, the 28-acre estate will be abloom with live music, interactive workshops, storytelling, open-air cocktails and the kind of family programming that makes kids and grown-ups equally giddy. The historic garden, perched high above the Hudson, has long been a haven for artists, nature lovers and anyone needing a moment of serenity (Mark Twain and the Roosevelts were early fans). But this celebratory weekend goes big by channeling Wave Hill's roots in creativity and community with an immersive lineup of art, ecology and pure summer joy. Kicking things off are hands-on nature walks, yoga on the lawn, woodworking demos and the rare chance to 'Meet the Gardeners' behind the blooming masterpieces. As day slips into golden hour, garden-inspired cocktails and twilight jazz take over. Saturday night hits a high note with a performance by Brass Queens, Brooklyn's all-female brass band bringing NOLA energy to the Bronx. Families can expect giant paper flower-making and pollinator rambles, while foodies can snag complimentary scoops from OnlyRareNYC, the city's first Black-owned hand-rolled ice cream biz. And yes, it tastes even better with sweeping views and a side of sunshine. The anniversary also marks the debut of four contemporary art exhibitions that weave together flora and feeling. Trees, we breathe explores our bond with the arboreal world through sculpture and sound. Bronx artist Sonja John fills the Sunroom with Floral Larceny, a luminous ode to diasporic plants. Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya transforms the Sun Porch with a suspended silk-and-brocade spirit-house, while outdoors, You're Soaking in It! invites dreamy communal rest amid the greenery. All the aforementioned activities are free with admission unless noted on the Wave Hill website. Admission to the garden is free on Thursdays, and you can get discounted tickets to attend the 60th anniversary celebrations on Saturday and Sunday by purchasing by June 6. (As always, admission is free for Wave Hill members.) In a city that often forgets to slow down, Wave Hill's anniversary is a reminder: Beauty blooms best when you take time to notice it.

Here's how to celebrate Latin Restaurant Week in NYC this month
In 2016, Warren Luckett launched the first-ever Black Restaurant Week to showcase he diversity of Black food across the country. After meeting Karinn Chavarria, the two decided to expand on the concept, this time giving Latin chefs, bar talents and industry folks their dues. Together, they founded Latin Restaurant Week, a two-week-long celebration that highlights the culinary contributions of the Latin community. Since getting its start in Houston in 2019, the movement has expanded to cities nationwide, including Washington DC, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Atlanta, landing in New York in 2022. Now returning for a third year, the initiative is coming back this June, continuing to promote Hispanic and Latin cuisine across the diaspora. Kicking off last month in Washington DC, Latin Restaurant Week is coming back to New York City from June 6 to June 20. For over two weeks, 15 bars and restaurants across New York City and New Jersey will be participating in the festivities, offering delectable specials from prix fixe menus to discounted deals. In conjunction with Feed the Soul Foundation, the initiative aims to amplify visibility and support one of the largest and most influential ethnic groups in the region. In face of rising food costs and shrinking margins, the events hope to act as a source of support in the face of stagnant margins, providing a boost in stability for Latino and Hispanic culinary business owners. The 10 best new London restaurant openings in June 2025
News Smashburgers, celeb-run restos, canal-side bistros and the return of Big Mamma feature in Time Out's best restaurants opening in the capital this month Another month comes with another bunch of plucky cooks risking it all to launch themselves upon London's hungry masses. When it comes to new chain-y stuff, Lina Stores continues its eau de nil-shaded takeover via the medium of al-dente pasta with a Canary Wharf branch, while Harry's opens its fourth Italian restaurant in King's Cross. Meanwhile, Fortnum & Mason Royal Exchange will be home to a summer residency by seafood zaddy Rick Stein. Here's the best of the rest. The 10 best new London restaurants opening in June 2025 1. The one with a famous person Lupa, Highbury Depending on your level of addiction to Deux Moi, the most compelling thing about this north London-based Roman-style trattoria isn't the supplì al telefono croquettes, but the fact that White Lotus alumni Theo James is part of the team. The dishy actor has joined forces with restauranter and Carousel co-founder Ed Templeton to open Lupa, and ex-Pidgin head chef Naz Hassan will be in charge of the kitchen. Expect carbonara, puntarelle, and a steady influx of flustered local mums. Lupa opens late June. 3 Highbury Park, N5 1UA 2. The Euro burger place Dumbo, Shoreditch French smashburger titans Dumbo are opening their first London location in mid-June. Their first joint outside of Paris, the powerfully brief menu sees them serving up cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, fries (French, of course) and chicken nuggets. And that's basically it. 119 Bethnal Green Road, E2 7DG 3. A telly chef branches out Gina, Chingford You might have been following pastry chef, author and Junior Bake Off presenter Ravneet Gill's journey to opening her new restaurant on Instagram (and Substack) in which she and chef husband Mattie Taiano go into furious detail about 'launching our first restaurant in the worst year for restaurants ever'. Intense! The family-run chophouse opens on June 11. 92 Station Road, Chingford, E4 7BA 4. The trendy one by the water Canal, Westbourne Park With perfect summer timing comes the June 30 opening of Canal. With a prime position next to the Grand Union Canal, it comes from the same sturdy stable as Crispin and Bistro Freddie. New York chef Adrian Hernandez Farina is helming a very 2025 menu of bistro bangers, from polenta flatbreads to seabream crudo with burnt blood orange and ricotta agnolotti with cavolo nero and pecorino. But the slickest thing about Canal? Nicholas Daley has designed the staff uniforms – including a kilt. 11B Woodfield Road, Westbourne Park, W9 2BA 5. The new Big Mamma one Barbarella, Canary Wharf It's been a while since Big Mamma launched one of their outre trattorias in London, but Barbarella is making up for lost time, with a massive mirrored glass bar, 1970s-style chrome lounge area, and walls draped with silk. A pervy kind of paradise, by the sounds of things. Food is set to be equally over-the-top; caramelised tomato tatin with Parmigiano cream, a mega 1.2kg T-bone steak, and a one-metre long spaghettone. Barbarella opens June 20. YY Building, 30 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, E14 5HX 6. The fabulous fish one Noisy Oyster, Shoreditch A fishy new spot from Madina Kazhimova and Anna Dolgushina from Soho's Firebird, Noisy Oyster is all about seafood classics from Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France but made with local, UK catches. The menu is inventive, verging on the pleasantly unhinged; oysters come with a smoked tomato water and horseradish mignonette, while scallops are dressed with pickled raspberry, chilli and basil oil, There's also a confit tuna nicoişe, pressed skate schnitzel with mixed peach panzanella, and crab, bisque and fennel orecchiette. Mini martinis are the move when it comes to drinks. Noisy Oyster opens June 20. 2 Nicholls Clarke Yard, Shoreditch, E1 6SH 7. The new Chilean hotspot Mareida, Fitzrovia Chilean cuisine isn't overly represented in London, which makes the opening of Mareida all the more intriguing. The Chilean team includes head chef Trinidad Vial Della Maggiora and Carolina Bazán, who was voted Latin America's Best Female Chef in 2019 by the World's 50 Best. Expect very good things. 160 Great Portland Street, W1W 5QA 8. An all-day Vietnamese canteen Lai Rai, Peckham Bringing all-day bánh mì to the masses, Lai Rai is a 'new school' Vietnamese coffee spot by day and a snack shop and beer house by night. Come for fried prawn on sugarcane stalks with peanut and nước chấm satay sauce, papaya jellyfish salad with pineapple, and twice-cooked crispy chicken. 181 Rye Lane, Peckham, SE15 4TP 9. The spruced up pub William The Fourth, Leyton Exale, one of our favourite breweries in London, is behind this revamped grand Victorian boozer. Reopening on June 12, it'll come with the arrival of Short Road Pizza – also in residence at Exale's Bethnal Green pub Three Colts – a Romana thin crust style pie with American-leaning toppings, and, yes, plenty of hot honey. Expect pints and cocktails as well as DJs, big games on the telly, quiz nights, and karaoke. 816 High Rd, Leyton, E10 6AE 10. Surf and also turf Island, King's Cross Big chef lads Brad Carter and Tom Brown are coming together to launch a new restaurant takeover at the King's Cross outpost of Mare Street Market. Island – which you'll find in the venue's Chandelier Room – is tribute to surf and turf, with the duo pushing a coastal-take on the classic American steakhouse. Expect caviar crisps, pickled cockles, oyster caesar salad, trout pastrami and quail stuffed with prawn paella on the fishy side of things, as well as a mighty mixed grill.
