Rolex, Proton X70 bought with illicit funds, director lands in court
Liew Yew Wei, 45, the director of Ecorigin PLT had yesterday claimed trial to the two offences before judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud.
The two money laundering charges read that he had on Oct 21, 2021 used proceeds from illegal activities worth RM20,000 to pay for the deposit of a Proton X70 car.
He had also on Sept 6, 2021 allegedly used RM9,996.46 from illegal proceeds to buy a Rolex Sea-Dweller watch priced RM75,000.
The charges were under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
Liew was also slapped with 12 counts dishonestly misappropriating the proceeds of sales of 480 bottles of Ecorigin PLT worth RM40,800 by depositing the monies into his bank account through 12 transactions.
He had allegedly committed the offences framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code between Dec 1, 2021 to Nov 1, 2022.
Another company director Ding Foong Piek, 52, claimed trial to 12 charges under Section 403 of the code.
She was accused of dishonestly misappropriating proceeds from the sales of 436 bottles of Ecorigin worth RM36,768 by channeling the monies into her own bank account via 12 transactions.
The duo were jointly charged with dishonestly misapropriating RM105,400 which were proceeds from the sales of 1,159 bottles of Ecorigin Plt via 23 transactions into their joint bank account from May 12, 2020 and Nov 1, 2021.
The judge set bail at RM50,000 in one surety for each accused and ordered them to surrender their passport to the court.
The court fixed Aug 19 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Alis Izzati Azurin Mohd Rusdi prosecuted while lawyer Shalehhuddin Salam acted for both accused.

Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the operation is being carried out continuously across all states to take firm action against luxury vehicles being driven without a valid motor vehicle licence (LKM) or insurance. 'This operation is a stern measure against luxury vehicles that are being driven without paying road tax, with some also without insurance coverage. The vehicles will be detained and seized until the owners settle all outstanding road tax, insurance, and summonses before they are released,' he told a press conference at JPJ Taman Daya recently. Also present were JPJ senior director (Enforcement) Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan and Johor JPJ director Azmil Zainal Adnan. Aedy said the seized vehicles included a Ferrari in Johor Bahru, which was without road tax and insurance, a Lamborghini Huracán with an annual road tax of RM12,000, and a Rolls-Royce in Kuala Lumpur with unpaid road tax of RM29,000 per year. He revealed that some of the vehicles had not had their road tax renewed for more than a year, with one case in Kuala Lumpur involving a lapse of up to three years, where the owner claimed to have 'forgotten' to renew it. 'Ops Luxury will be expanded nationwide, including to Perlis, Sabah, and Sarawak. This is not a one-off action, but a continuous effort. 'We do not want luxury vehicles on the road without valid road tax and insurance, as the risks to public safety in the event of an accident are extremely high,' he said. JOHOR BAHRU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has confiscated 270 luxury vehicles across Malaysia for operating without valid road tax and insurance under Ops Luxury. The operation, active since July 1, targets luxury cars driven without proper documentation nationwide. China national fined RM25,000 for harbouring illegals

Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old China national was fined a total of RM25,000 by the Sessions Court here for harbouring five illegal immigrants at premises under his control. Li Hao pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, who imposed a RM5,000 fine for each illegal immigrant involved. In default of payment, Li will face six months' imprisonment per charge. Li was found to have allowed five Filipino nationals — two women and three men, aged between 18 and 48 — who lacked valid travel documents, to remain at the Liubaba Lease premises in Taman Emas, Jalan Penampang, around 9.10pm on July 10 this year. The offence falls under Section 55E(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 55E(2) of the same Act. The law provides for a fine between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, for each illegal immigrant found on the premises. In mitigation, Li appealed for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer Mohd Sharifuddin Salim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to serve as a deterrent. In a separate case in the same court, four Filipino nationals were jailed four months each after pleading guilty to entering the State without valid travel documents. Nanette Sapnay Pili, Cherry Mae Sampung Bernardino, Junaida Omar, and Kc Marwuez Sanchez were arrested during an Immigration enforcement operation at an entertainment outlet in Tanjung Aru at 1.20am on Aug 3. The four failed to produce valid identification documents during the operation. The court ordered their sentences to run from the date of their arrest.
