Deion Sanders Sends Clear Message to Mel Kiper Jr. After NFL Draft Controversy
The NFL draft is now firmly in the rearview mirror, and while both quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward have found homes for the foreseeable future, some drama surfaced this week involving ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.
It started when Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal claimed he had spoken to 'a million people' about Ward during the pre-draft process—except, notably, not Kiper.

Kiper, a vocal supporter of Sanders throughout the draft, expressed his frustration live on-air as Shedeur continued to slide down the board. For nearly four rounds, Sanders remained the No. 1 overall player on Kiper's big board.
Responding to Cristobal's comments on Wednesday, Kiper fired back on social media:
'Mario Cristobal claims he spoke to a million people about Cam Ward, yet the one he didn't speak to—me—had Ward ranked higher (6th on my Big Board) than any other draft expert,' Kiper posted. 'Interesting, isn't it? And oh by the way, I didn't speak to Deion about Shedeur either. I need another Orange Crush after this nonsense.'
By Thursday, Colorado Buffaloes head coach—and Shedeur's father—Deion Sanders had responded. Sanders retweeted Kiper's post with a message of appreciation and clarity:
'But I love you, my man! You stood on the desk with great balance, 10 toes down, and said what you doggone said & didn't flinch. You knew what time it was, my man, and we're blessed to be right where God wanted us to be—with OPPORTUNITY. They forgot I was in the TV/entertainment business for 20 years before coaching.'
Mel Kiper Jr. has been covering the NFL draft for decades, and he's no stranger to criticism. Known for his bold takes and firm opinions, Kiper rarely flinches in the face of backlash—and this year was no different.

Throughout the 2025 draft, Kiper remained one of Shedeur Sanders' most vocal supporters, especially as the Colorado quarterback unexpectedly slid down the board. His continued defense of Sanders became a viral storyline after Shedeur went unselected through Day 1 and Day 2.

While Cam Ward was selected No. 1 overall by the Tennessee Titans, Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round, where the Cleveland Browns finally picked him at No. 144—an outcome that shocked many, including Kiper, who had consistently projected Sanders as a clear first-round talent.

Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb reacts to Jalen Hurts skipping Trump White House visit
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts divided fans when he chose to skip the team's celebratory White House visit in April. Hurts was one of several Eagles players who chose not to go, alongside AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jalen Carter and Brandon Graham. But as the quarterback, Hurts' absence garnered particular scrutiny. Hurts told reporters on May 20 that he didn't go because he "wasn't available." Former Eagles star quarterback Donovan McNabb, who says he's mentored Hurts since coming to Philadelphia, gave his reaction to his protégé's absence in an interview with Fox News Digital. McNabb also suggested that Hurts' absence was based on a decision. "I don't have a problem with it at all. I agree, I totally agree with him and the decision that he made, it's a grown man decision, and he stuck with it," McNabb said. "And for him, his focus again is to get himself ready to possibly get back to another Super Bowl." McNabb added that he would have made the same decision as Hurts. Hurts also raised eyebrows again when he attended the Met Gala the following week after missing the White House. Still, the vast majority of the Eagles' roster and coaching staff did attend the White House and celebrated with Trump, as well as the president's daughter, Ivanka. Those players included star running back Saquon Barkley. "It's everybody's choice," McNabb said of the players who went. "You don't harp on anybody else's decision of what they made, it's a decision. It's a personal decision that he made, for both, for Jalen and for Saquon," McNabb said. "And again, after you do your visit or whatever it may be, you get right back to focusing on the task at hand and seeing if you can have that opportunity to be invited back to the White House." When the Eagles won the Super Bowl back in 2018, the team decided not to attend the White House. Trump rescinded the invitation to host the Eagles after several players said they would not participate in the visit because of his previous criticisms of national anthem protests. The Los Angeles Dodgers visited the White House several weeks before the Eagles did, to commemorate their World Series title. Mookie Betts, who skipped a visit in 2019 with the Boston Red Sox, attended this year. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

"Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and that's not something we're not going to think about," Mott said (via ESPN). As such, Journalism, which finished second in the Kentucky Derby, went on to win the 2025 Preakness Stakes, creating a showdown with Sovereignty when both horses take part in the Belmont Stakes among a field of eight horses. The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes is set for Saturday at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and post time is 7:04 p.m. ET/4:04 p.m. PT.
