Everything is determined in Kuala Lumpur, yet they continue to claim they are autonomous?' Yong asked. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Supreme Council member and Vice Youth Chief Yong Yit Jee slammed the Democratic Action Party (DAP) over its participation in the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional seat arrangement for the coming Sabah state election, calling it a 'direct blow to Sabah DAP's long-claimed autonomy'. 'In November last year, DAP's Sec-Gen declared that Sabah DAP had been granted autonomy to negotiate its own cooperation. Yet, barely six months later, the Unity Government's latest statement proves that was a false promise,' said Yong, referring to the joint statement issued by the Unity Government's Secretariat on Friday. Yong pointed out that the statement mentioned that all final decisions would be made by the top leaderships of PH and BN at the national level. 'May I ask DAP both national and Sabah is this what they call autonomy? Sabah DAP cannot even decide its own seat allocations. Everything is determined in Kuala Lumpur, yet they continue to claim they are autonomous?' he said. He said Sabah DAP's inconsistency is further exposed by their past denial of cooperation with Umno before the 2022 general election, only to now sit in the same government, and worse, follow top-down decisions from national party leadership. 'Sabah DAP has gone from denying alliances to becoming mere executors of KL's orders. The people of Sabah are not forgetful. 'One statement from the Unity Government has exposed all their falsehoods,' he said. Yong said Sabahans need a political party that will stand firmly on local rights and not serve as agents for Malayan parties. 'Sabah is not a vassal of Malayan parties. Decisions affecting our state should not come from distant KL. The people of Sabah deserve genuine autonomy and self-determination.' He called on Sabahans to support a truly local-based government in the upcoming polls. 'Now is the time for us Sabahans to unite and build the Sabah we rightfully deserve,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Umno Youth chief leads group of over 200 in march on barricaded shop lots

KEPALA BATAS: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh led a group of over 200 people in a march towards barricaded shop lots here, saying the group came in peace. Chanting "Merdeka", "Sayang Malaysia" and "Pertahan Jalur Merdeka", the group marched about 1.4km to the location with many waving the Jalur Gemilang. "We are not here to bully anyone. We are here to make it clear that there cannot be such incidents as our flag is sacred. "We are here to send a clear message that we cannot accept any form of mistake like this. "It cannot be hung upside down," he said at the gathering along Jalan Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi here on Thursday (Aug 14). The planned gathering followed a recent controversy, linked to an upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident at a hardware store here. Dr Akmal said the group represented Malaysians and not any political party. "It is not a question of politics or race but it about respect for our country, Malaysia," he said. The group of over 200 people, including representatives from Bersatu and PAS, then sang the national anthem. Just before the gathering ended, there was a war of words between the Umno representatives and Lawyers For Liberty (LFL) director Zaid Malek, who turned up with placards saying "Jangan Membuli" and "Jangan Bersikap Zionis". The group then needed to be calmed down and were told to disperse after Zaid's group put down their placards. Zaid said it was only fair that he was allowed freedom of speech like the Umno representatives. He said the fact that the group had turned despite the flag placement being an honest mistake was an act of intimidation. "His (Dr Akmal's) call to have the hardware shop owner charged amounts to bullying and harassment. 'They hurled all sorts of accusations at the hardware store owner about the upside-down flag incident. "Of course, the owner would be scared," he said. Zaid also asked why they did not gather in Terengganu where there was also an issue with the Jalur Gemilang. 'No one is free from committing mistakes. The store owner has apologised and had no intention to commit the mistake. 'We are here to defend him from any form of harassment,' he said. There was strong police presence throughout to control the crowd and the road leading to the store were also barricaded. Businesses were also forced to close early as a safety precaution. Meanwhile, local DAP leaders handed out Jalur Gemilang as they waited for Dr Akmal and his group to turn up. Penang DAP vice-chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, Penang DAP assistant secretary H'ng Mooi Lye and Penang Chief Minister's Special Coordinator Lay Hock Peng, among others, turned up early to distribute food and Jalur Gemilang to passers-by. On Saturday (Aug 9), hardware shop owner Pang Chin Tian, 59, was arrested by police following accusations that he had improperly displayed the flag in front of his shop. He has been released on police bail. Pang said he would accept any punishment over the case, which he described as unintentional and regretful. On Thursday, Bukit Aman advised all parties to cancel the planned gathering in Bertam, Kepala Batas to avoid conflicts and ensure safety. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police viewed seriously any issue that could threaten public safety and well-being. "In the interest of preserving community safety and preventing confrontations between groups, we advise that the gathering on Thursday be called off," he said. The gathering is believed to be linked to a recent controversy over an upside-down display of the Jalur Gemilang that went viral on social media. The IGP said investigations are ongoing, with 38 reports lodged nationwide, 17 in Penang and 21 in other states. "The probe also covers action against individuals who recorded and shared the footage under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. "The investigation paper was submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor on Monday (Aug 11) and is now under review," he said.

Feasibility study for Trans-Borneo Railway to conclude in 2026

Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The feasibility study for the proposed Trans-Borneo Railway linking Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan, Indonesia, is scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2026, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook ( pic ) said, The Edge Malaysia reported on Thursday. In a written parliamentary reply to Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Loke said a local consultant had been appointed to carry out the 12-month study, which began in June 2025, focusing on the railway's potential in Sabah and Sarawak. He said the study would assess technical, commercial, socio-economic, operational, governance, and social benefit aspects, and provide a strategic plan, implementation schedule, action plan, and timeline, with input from all key stakeholders. Local media previously reported that RM7 million had been allocated for the study, fully funded by the federal government under the 12th Malaysia Plan, with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya confirming its approval. First proposed in 2015 by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to then Indonesian president Joko Widodo, the project envisions a 1,600km network with trains running at up to 350km/h, though Loke has clarified that it remains at the proposal stage and has not been awarded to any company. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Federal Govt halts immigration enforcement temporarily in Sabah for digital registration

Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Saifuddin (middle) at the press conference. KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government has placed a temporary halt on immigration enforcement in Sabah to allow the state to carry out a digital registration drive for foreign workers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, during a press conference on Thursday, said the initiative will help the state compile accurate, centralised biometric data to better manage its migrant workforce. He said 113,282 foreign nationals have so far been recorded, mainly in plantations, with plans to extend the exercise to agriculture, manufacturing, mining and quarrying sectors. The minister clarified that the programme is unrelated to citizenship or permanent residency, adding that the Special Committee on Citizenship for Sabah has processed 1,247 applications since 2021 under separate provisions. On another matter, Saifuddin confirmed that police procedural lapses were found in the case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir's death, and said he will present a detailed ministerial statement in Parliament on Monday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
