Kaizer Chiefs coach Kaze: Pressure is on Orlando Pirates in Nedbank Cup final

The Star09-05-2025

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze says the team is comfortable with the underdog label ahead of Saturday's Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates. .
The Nedbank Cup final kicks off at 3.30pm on Saturday and will be played in front of a sold-out crowd at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
With Pirates currently on a five-game winning streak in the Soweto Derby, all the anticipation for the Sea Robbers to make it a sixth win in a row.
Kaze, however, has embraced his team not being given a chance.
'I'm very happy to come into this game as an underdog,' Kaze told the media in Durban on Wednesday.
'And we know what are our chances, we played them not long ago. We feel it is a privilege to play them two times in such a short period, but a final is a final and I'm very happy that all the pressure from this final is on Orlando Pirates' shoulders.'
The Soweto giants meet for the second time in a week, with Pirates having edged Chiefs 2-1 in their recent Betway Premiership clash. But Kaze believes the nature of a cup final changes the equation.
'The beauty of games like this is that there is no need for extra motivation because everyone is already fully motivated,' he said.
'It is a final (of the Nedbank Cup) and it's a derby, so motivation is at maximum. In fact, we have to try and calm the mood slightly to prevent the players getting too tense and overhyped.'
'You need a good balance to give a good performance. You have to have a clear head to carry out the game-plan, and play without fear.'
Despite a difficult season under new coach Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs will be aiming to end a near 10-year trophy drought.

Nasreddine Nabi didn't' want Orlando Pirates duo at Kaizer Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs are set to welcome about five players to the club ahead of their pre-season tour of the Netherlands. ADVERTISEMENT Chiefs are set to jet of for that pre-season trip next month with Nasreddine Nabi expected to welcome new faces. Mako and Monyane set to join Chiefs from Pirates Among those new faces is expected to be Orlando Pirates duo Thabiso Monyane as well as Paseka Mako. The defensive duo are both set to join Chiefs next week when their contracts officially expire at the Buccaneers. These being moves that came as a shock to many football lovers on the local front. This partly because it is normal normal that two players cross the floor at the same time. Some sections of the Chiefs fan base have also questioned the signings, and possible lack of ambition. They have cried that Amakhosi are not backing coach Nabi with his first choice targets, but giving him those of the management. This now seems to be confirmed by sources speaking to Soccer-Laduma. They look to have hinted that Mako and Monyane were not the Tunisian tactician's first choice. Not the players Nabi wanted 'It's believed that the coach was not part of interest in those two players. Apparently, the coach was looking at three right backs, in Richards Bay defender Lwandile Mabuya, Cape Town Spurs' Lungelo Bhengu and Mhleli Mabuza who had trials at the club in May. And at left back the coach's main interest was Fawaaz Basadien (Stellies) and Mohamed Hussein from Simba SC in Tanzania. But apparently the scouts and management are believed to have liked Monyane and Mako. So, we will see what will happen in the pre-season whether the coach will still go for his targets or they will settle for the two former Orlando Pirates players,' said the source. 'Ouaddou has an opportunity to create his history'

Orlando Pirates legend Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi believes the new Bucs coach Abdeslam Ouaddou can take the club to the next level. The 46-year-old coach takes over from Jose Riveiro, who has since moved to Al Ahly. After much specualtion about his replacement, Pirates announced on Monday that Ouaddou was their new coach. A day after the announcement, the Buccaneers reveiled that Sipho Mbule was their new signing ahead of the new season. Vilakazi, who is Pirates' all-time leading goalscorer, has backed Ouaddou to succeed. 'Look, he did very well at Marumo Gallants, they [Pirates supporters] just have to give him the support and confidence to say we believe in you, and we saw the job you did at Gallants and hope you will do it here at Pirates,' he told Sowetan Live . 'He is a good coach looking at what he did with Gallants. He didn't even have a pre-season with them. We always know Gallants to be fighting for relegation, but he put them in a position where they didn't have to worry about that. Just imagine with the material and resources at Pirates, I think he can take the club to another level.' Vilakazi did admit that the new coach will need time but felt confident that he will succeed given the fact that he will assess his team during pre-season. 'He has an opportunity to create his history because he will find good players at Pirates,' added the former Bafana Bafana star. 'I think he is going to do well, we just need to give him time and I think it is good that he will have a pre-season with the team unlike at Gallants, yet he still put them in a good position. Imagine with the good players Pirates have … I think things will be much better.' Ouaddou's big test will be during pre-season when Pirates play a number of friendly matches in Spain.
