Aamir Khan's decision to publicly announce that his new film Sitaare Zameen Par will not be made available on a streaming platform in the near future has reaped good returns at the box office. The coming-of-age sports comedy, directed by RS Prasanna, has crossed the Rs 60 crore mark in four days at the domestic box office. On Monday, its fourth day of release, Sitaare Zameen Par dropped to single digits for the first time, after exceeded expectations in its debut weekend. It earned Rs 8.5 crore, which is slightly lower than its opening day collection of Rs 10.7 crore. Over the weekend, the film earned Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday, and Rs 27.25 crore on Saturday.
Its opening weekend collection stood at Rs 58.15, comfortably crossing the Rs 50 crore mark in three days. Despite the significant drop on Monday, Sitaare Zameen Par has managed to not only cross the crucial Monday test, but also breached the lifetime domestic box office collection of Aamir's last film, Advait Chandan's Laal Singh Chaddha, which released in 2022.
With no streaming premiere in sight and three more days sans any major competition, Sitaare Zameen Par should be able to take its haul past the Rs 100 crore mark this weekend. This Friday, on June 27, it'll begin competing with Vishal Furia's mythological horror film Maa, starring Kajol, which comes from the world of her husband Ajay Devgn's hit Shaitaan last year.
'Right now, it's a famine or feast situation at the box office. Either the films are not doing any business at all, or the one or two that people are loving are going through the roof, earning more than Rs 500 crore. The whole middle chunk has vanished. Why? Because I'm watching them on Netflix or Amazon,' Aamir told SCREEN in an interview before the film's release. 'Which is why I've come up with the decision to release Sitaare Zameen Par only in theatres. It'll premiere on television or streaming only after one year. My loyalty is with the theatres and my trust in my audience,' he added.
The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) lauded Aamir's decision to release Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively in theatres. Taking to their X handle, the MAI shared an appreciation letter for Aamir, calling the actor's decision a 'significant moment' for all the cinema operators in India.
In the letter shared on Thursday, MAI wrote, 'Multiplex Association of India (MAI) proudly applauds Mr. Aamir Khan for his visionary and resolute decision to release his film, Sitaare Zameen Par, exclusively in theatres on 20 June 2025. In an era wherein media and distribution platforms have become increasingly fragmented, Aamir Khan's choice to back the theatrical format reaffirms the enduring power of the big-screen experience.'

Sitaare Zameen Par is the official Hindi adaptation of 2018 Spanish film Campeones. It's also the spiritual sequel to Aamir's 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par. The film also stars Genelia D'Souza, Dolly Ahluwalia, and Brijendra Kala, and also launches 10 new actors. It's produced by Aamir and Aparna Purohit under Aamir Khan Productions.

Netflix's K-pop Demon Hunters sparks culture war, accused of stealing Chinese traditions despite breaking global streaming records

Netflix's K-Pop Demon Hunters is riding high on global success, but its rise hasn't come without controversy. The animated film, which combines the glimmer of Korean pop stardom with fantasy worldbuilding, has claimed the top spot on Netflix in 26 countries and landed in the Top 10 across 93 nations. Yet even as it captures hearts around the world, the movie is drawing criticism from Chinese viewers who accuse it of appropriating Chinese culture. Chinese netizens accuse K-Pop Demon Hunters of 'cultrual appropriation' According to KBIZoom (via Sohu News), the backlash stems from claims that the film's aesthetic borrows too heavily from Chinese tradition. According to the report, Chinese netizens believe the movie "stole from Chinese heritage", citing specific details like traditional garments, palace-style architecture, herbal medicine references, and symbolic design motifs. One online comment read, 'Is Korea not even trying to hide their cultural plagiarism anymore? This is clearly Chinese.' Another accused Sony, one of the film's co-producers, of aiding what they called 'cultural theft'. The comments quickly multiplied on Chinese-language platforms, with statements like 'All the traditional knots are clearly Chinese' and 'Too many cultural thieves' flooding posts about the film. Some went further, mocking the animation quality and the character design, calling it 'cheap, boring trash' and taking aim at the male lead's visual styling. However, a number of Chinese viewers were also impressed by the movie, praising it as 'a rare animated gem' and appreciating the dynamic female leads and energetic soundtrack. One viewer wrote, 'The sisters are cool, and the music is great,' while another added, 'Sure, the story is simple, but it's still fun and engaging.' Netflix is not available in China Notably, Netflix is not officially available in China. Many of the loudest critics of the movie likely accessed K-Pop Demon Hunters through unofficial or pirated channels, leading to a wave of irony as those who watched it without authorisation accused the creators of theft. This paradox wasn't lost on other social media users, who questioned the basis of outrage from people watching on illegal streams. K-pop Demon Hunters breaks streaming records Despite the criticism, the film is undeniably thriving. Streaming analytics platform FlixPatrol reported that as of June 22, it was the most-watched title on Netflix globally, with a viewership score of 771. That's a solid lead over the runner-up, Straw, which scored 609. The film's widespread popularity speaks to its ability to connect with viewers beyond the K-pop fandom, offering a colourful mix of music, action, and mythology. K-pop Demon Hunters Soundtrack soars on US iTunes According to the Chat Data X account, the film's soundtrack shot up to No. 1 on the US iTunes Album Chart. K-pop Idols inspirations behind the heroes and villains The animated girl group Huntrix didn't come out of thin air. Director Maggie Kang shared that the team took major cues from real-life K-pop queens—especially BLACKPINK—when shaping the group's fierce energy and confident stage vibes. You can feel it in their styling, their moves, and the way they command every scene, just like how BLACKPINK owns a stage in real life. Archana Puran Singh's car stopped by Salman Khan's security outside Kapil Sharma Show's set; Bhai reveals he watches her vlogs

Back from her family vacation in Switzerland, Archana Puran Singh was back at work on The Great Indian Kapil Show. The comedy series returned for a third season recently, with Salman Khan appearing as the special guest on the season premiere episode. On Tuesday, Archana took to her YouTube channel and posted a behind-the-scenes vlog from the show's set in Film City. The vlog also featured her husband Parmeet Sethi, and their two sons, Aaryamann and Ayushmaan. They were accompanied by Archana's assistant, Bhagyashree, for whom they planned a surprise meeting with Salman. They kept this a secret from her, telling her that duplicates would be present instead. On the way to Film City, Archana remarked that even her car was stopped by the extra security personnel for Salman. The superstar showed up on set, surrounded by several guards. Salman's security was beefed up in the wake of numerous threats made to his life by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. But he seemed to be in good spirits as he interacted with Kapil warmly. Meanwhile, Archana took her seat next to Navjot Singh Sidhu, who used to be a fixture on the show before she took over the position. 'This looks like a NASA operation,' Parmeet remarked. Meanwhile, Aaryamann and Ayushmaan fought each other over the Netflix goodie bag that a production assistant presented to Archana. They ripped open the wrapping and declared which items would go to whom. On the set, they kept recording Bhagyashree's reactions as Salman made an appearance, and she realised that he wasn't a dupe. After the shoot, Salman hung back to interact with guests and other cast members. Archana introduced him to her sons, who said that they recently watched Andaz Apna Apna again in theatres. Salman told them that he has seen some of their vlogs, including the one featuring Sudesh Lehri. They were honoured. Later, they also interacted with Sidhu, who was shocked at how closely Aayushmaan resembles Parmeet. The family ended the vlog by returning to Archana's lavish vanity van.
