YSRCP alleges largest liquor scam in Andhra under Naidu govt

News185 days ago
Amaravati, July 23 (PTI) YSRCP leader Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy on Wednesday accused the Andhra Pradesh government of orchestrating the 'country's largest-ever liquor scam" under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Speaking to media after visiting his son and Rajampet MP Mithun Reddy in Rajamahendravaram central jail, he alleged that the TDP-led government has revived illicit liquor trade, turning Andhra Pradesh into 'Madhyandhra Pradesh" (alcoholic state) rife with corruption.
'The ruling coalition government is orchestrating the largest liquor scam in the country's history and plunging Andhra Pradesh into a state of corruption and mismanagement," said Ramachandra Reddy, addressing a press conference.
The previous YSRCP government ensured that liquor sales were tightly regulated through government-run outlets, which led to a significant reduction in sales while increasing state revenue by Rs 25,000 crore annually, pointed out Ramachandra Reddy.
He claimed that revenue from liquor sales during previous TDP regime, between 2014 to 2019, was only Rs 17,000 crore despite logging higher sales.
The former minister alleged that under the present Naidu dispensation, liquor privatisation, retail price violations, door deliveries and belt shops (unlicensed liquor shos) have allegedly made a comeback.
The YSRCP leader condemned the registration of what he termed as 'false" cases against party leaders, comparing the TDP-led government to Taliban rule.
He alleged that Mithun Reddy is being denied legal jail amenities and warned of legal action if statutory facilities are not ensured for jailed representatives.
Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP. PTI MS STH ROH

14 years on, land acquired in Mansa village remains unused

Bathinda: Amid a debate over Punjab's contentious land pooling scheme, intended to gather 65,000 acres for urban development, 750 acres of land acquired 14 years ago in Mansa district for setting up a power plant is lying vacant and undeveloped. The land, situated in Gobindpura village within the Budhlada sub-division, was forcibly acquired in March 2011 by the erstwhile SAD-BJP govt for a 1,320 MW power plant to be built by Peona Power, a subsidiary of India Bulls. The acquisition was met with fierce resistance from villagers, leading to nearly two years of protests marked by violent clashes. On Aug 2, 2011, farmer Surjit Singh from Hamidi village lost his life, and numerous others sustained injuries during confrontations with police. Today, residents are not only grappling with the unfulfilled promise of development but also the nuisance of wild boars and neelgai emanating from the overgrown, unused land, damaging crops and disrupting daily life. "Not even a single brick has been laid in these 14 years after the state govt acquired 750 acres of land against the wishes of landowners," said Gurlal Singh Gobindpura, a local resident whose family was at the forefront of the original protests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sekeloa: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo "It has turned into a jungle from where wild animals cause trouble to villagers and damage crops," he added. While the govt initially offered Rs 23.68 lakh per acre, agitation by farmer organisations like BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) ultimately compelled an increase in compensation to Rs 25.68 lakh per acre. Despite the enhanced payout, the promised development remains elusive. Mansa deputy commissioner Kulwant Singh acknowledged the lack of progress. He confirmed that developmental activity has been stalled because certain critical stretches of land could not be acquired, preventing the consolidation of the entire tract. Singh also confirmed villagers' complaints about wild animals due to the prolonged disuse of the land. "The industrial house now has plans to set up a solar plant on the acquired land, and a project report is being prepared," the DC said. MSID:: 122951602 413 |

Capts, Badals, Majithias continue family legacies to backstab Punjab: CM

Khatkar Kalan (Nawanshahr): Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday laid the foundation stone of the Martyr Bhagat Singh Heritage Complex here, issuing a call to the people to back his administration in eradicating drugs and corruption – a fitting homage to the iconic martyr. In a scathing attack, CM Mann alleged that the ongoing war against these scourges had "exposed the ugly face" of traditional political parties, accusing them of colluding to "plunder the state" and perpetrate a "genocide of youth through drugs". "Captains, Badals, and Majithias continued the dubious legacy of their families to backstab Punjab and its people for their vested interests," he alleged. The CM went on to claim that the ancestors of Bikram Singh Majithia , currently behind bars for "his involvement in drug trade", had betrayed the people by hosting a dinner for General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer on the very night of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He further asserted that Captain Amarinder Singh , "very vocal about the human rights of his nephew Majithia," and his family possessed a "dubious track record of deceiving Punjab by standing with every force inimical to the state, whether they were Mughals, Britishers, or now BJP". Mann, however, insisted the event was "not a political function but a solemn occasion to pay tributes to the great martyrs". He said that for the first time in Punjab's history, a CM and his entire cabinet took the oath of office on the sacred land of Khatkar Kalan. Cabinet minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh, MLAs Dr Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, and Santosh Kataria, among others, were present at the ceremony. CM hands over cheque to fallen ASI's family Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on Monday handed over a cheque worth Rs 1 crore to the family members of ASI Dhanwant Singh, who died during the call of duty. He said that the ASI attained martyrdom on Jan 18 while performing his duty in Nawanshahr. MSID:: 122956102 413 |

Drone sighting rumours spread to NCR villages, police field panic calls

Ghaziabad: After western UP and Uttarakhand, rumours about suspicious low-flying objects appear to have gripped several NCR villages. Over the last five days, the police control room in the city has received 47 calls reporting 'drone sightings', all from rural pockets in Bhojpur, Muradnagar, Niwari, Loni and Kotwali and 29 of them in the last 24 hours. The sightings have been followed by villagers standing patrol with sticks as rumours swirl. Locals believe gangs are using drones to spy on their houses and rob them. Reports of 'drone sightings' in other districts have been spreading through social media posts, some of which are accompanied by videos of drones. But their authenticity is questionable. According to police, the maximum number of calls (9) came from Bhojpur, which is close to Meerut, followed by three from Muradnagar and one from Kotwali. Police said most callers claimed to have seen drones hovering near rooftops late in the night. "All the calls were verified by local police units, but no drone was recovered or visually confirmed so far," DCP (rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said. "Around midnight, some locals raised an alarm after spotting a drone. Five minutes later, another drone appeared. This is when we called the police. But it escaped as children started pelting stones," he said. In Muradnagar, Veerendra Kumar spoke of a similar incident. "I was inside the room while my wife and children were sleeping on the terrace. Suddenly, they shouted 'drone, drone'. When I came out, I saw it above our terrace," he told TOI. "I called my brother and neighbours. We saw the drone fly toward the forest and disappear." A police team visited the spot but couldn't find any drone. Kumar told cops that on June 29 night, when he was admitted to a hospital for surgery and his children stayed at his brother's house next door, Rs 25,000 in cash and valuables were stolen from his home. In Masuri, villagers, including pradhan Tassawar Ali of Nahal village, claimed to have seen drones hovering overhead for the past five nights. A local team has been formed to patrol the village, and complaints have been lodged with the Masuri police. The DCP told TOI that some locals have submitted videos that are being sent to forensic labs for analysis. "We've intensified patrolling in these villages. Special police teams were deployed from 11pm to 3am on Sunday, too, but nothing unusual was found," he said. Police have urged people not to rely on unverified social media claims and report any suspicious activity for investigation. Reiterating that no concrete evidence had emerged to confirm drone sightings in Ghaziabad, Additional CP Alok Priyadarshi told TOI that restrictions under Section 163 of BNSS, prohibiting drones, UAVs, hot-air balloons and paragliders were imposed in Ghaziabad during Operation Sindoor in May and continue to remain in force. Under it, nine police station areas, including Kotwali, Kavi Nagar, Link Road, Sahibabad, Vijay Nagar, Tronica City, Loni, Modinagar and Muradnagar, were declared no-fly zones due to their proximity to the Hindon IAF base.
