Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox; the Sony-published game breaks precedent by becoming a multiplatform title

Time of India03-07-2025
In a major break from prior precedent, PlayStation's Helldivers 2 will be going multiplatform with full cross-play support. The title, developed by Arrowhead Games Studios, announced its partnership with Xbox on July 3, 2025, on Xbox News Wire.
Pre-orders for Helldivers 2 are already open, and the game will be available on Xbox Series X and S on August 26, 2025. The standard edition of the game is priced at $39.99, while the Super Citizen Edition is priced at $59.99.
Helldivers 2 was originally released on the PlayStation 5 and PC on 8 February 2024, and is the sequel to the original Helldivers, which came out in 2015. While Microsoft has increasingly gravitated towards publishing on rival consoles in recent months, Sony breaking its own platform exclusivity is comparatively unprecedented.

Helldivers 2 takes place in a futuristic, militaristic setting where the 'managed democracy' of Super Earth has been waging a campaign of galactic conquest. By the end of the original Helldivers, Super Earth had asserted its supremacy over various enemy factions, including the Bugs, the Cyborgs, and the Illuminate.
However, the events of Helldivers see the Super Earth Armed Forces outmatched after a Terminid outbreak results in Super Earth losing its iron grip on the planet, following which rebellions from the Automataons and the Illuminate also spring up.
Gameplay consists of players, who are part of the Helldivers unit, being tasked with missions to crush these rebellions and reassert Super Earth's supremacy.
Both Helldivers and Helldivers 2 were massive successes for Arrowhead Games Studios, with the latter being among the most popular games of the PS5 generation.
Helldivers 2 is one of the rare PlayStation games to come to Xbox
PlayStation does not have a strong track record of eschewing console exclusivity, unlike what Microsoft has been doing since its strategic pivot. This makes Helldivers 2's Xbox release all the more notable, because PlayStation was its publisher both for the PS5 and PC.
In fact, there had been some controversy among the PC fandom when Sony mandated PSN account registration for the PC version of the game as well, before eventually backing away from that requirement and subsequently lifting all regional restrictions on the game on June 14, 2025.

AI startup Perplexity seeks to acquire Google Chrome in a $34 billion bid

Artificial Intelligence startup Perplexity has made a bold offer to acquire Google's Chrome browser for $34.5 billion, to get ahead of a potential requirement for Google to sell the web browser in US antitrust proceedings. Meanwhile, the Perplexity Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko said that, 'multiple large investment funds have agreed to finance the transaction in full."(Reuters/Representational Image) The unsolicited bid, which Perplexity intends to fund with the help of outside investors, was sent to Google on Tuesday morning, Bloomberg reported, citing a Perplexity spokesperson. This move by Perplexity comes after its rival startup OpenAI also expressed interest in acquiring Chrome, which is a significant way people access the web on PC's The startup company has assured the users that it would not make any 'stealth modifications' to Chrome, calling it a commitment to continuity. Addressing any antitrust concerns related to the deal, Perplexity also said that the offer to Google does not include any equity in Perplexity. While Alphabet Inc.'s Google has not yet responded to the news about the offer. Last year, a US federal judge said that Google has an illegal monopoly on internet search. Following this, the US government proposed changes, including requiring Google to sell the Chrome browser and license the search data to competitors. Further, US District Judge Amit Mehta, who heard the case related to Google's monopoly, is expected to issue a ruling in the coming days with remedies to prevent the company from monopolising the online search market. Also read: 'Spoke to Nikhil and Nithin': Indian-American Perplexity CEO hints at Zerodha collaboration However, questions are being raised about how the San Francisco-based startup Perplexity could afford to follow through with its Google offer. Earlier this year, it raised $100 million in a round of funding that valued it at $ 18 billion, Bloomberg reported. Meanwhile, the Perplexity Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko said that, 'multiple large investment funds have agreed to finance the transaction in full,' while declining to name the firms. This is not the first instance of Perplexity making an offer for a major internet property ahead of a forced transition. Earlier this year, it also submitted a bid to TikTok parent ByteDance Ltd. to merge with its US operations and create a new entity. This was amid TikTok facing a US ban without a deal. Web browsers have recently become significant as AI companies are seeking to build agents which would complete simple tasks for users, including online shopping. If the offer gets approved, Perplexity has claimed that it would invest $3 billion over the next two years in Chrome and Chromium and 'extend offers to a substantial portion of Chrome talent.'

Microsoft's next Xbox might be a modular, PC-like gaming console: Report

The next-generation Xbox might not just be a console — it could feel more like a user-upgradable pre-built gaming PC. According to a report by Tom's Guide, Microsoft's chip, reportedly codenamed 'Magnus,' may adopt a modular design that allows its core components — like the CPU and GPU — to be mixed and matched over time. This flexibility could offer enhanced performance, more frequent updates, and better long-term value. If this turns out to be true, it would reshape how we view console lifecycles. What is the 'Magnus' APU design? The rumoured 'Magnus' chip uses a dual-die architecture — meaning the CPU (central processing unit) and the GPU (graphics processing unit) are manufactured as separate chips and packaged together. This contrasts with most current consoles, where both processing units are built into a single, unified chip. By separating them, Microsoft could swap out or upgrade parts of the system without replacing the whole console, making upgrades easier and more cost-effective, Tom's Guide reported. Digital Foundry's analysis suggests this modular design, linked over a high-bandwidth 384-bit fabric, could enable Microsoft to release different Xbox-branded systems tailored for varying price segments, possibly including handhelds and PC-like setups. What this means for gamers If adopted, this modular approach could mean Microsoft releases performance refreshes every few years instead of waiting a decade for a completely new Xbox. For players, that could translate into better graphics, smoother performance, and a longer-lasting system — all without the price jump of building a custom PC. It offers a middle path: performance close to a PC, but with console simplicity — no messy parts, no driver installation. This could also lead to Microsoft abandoning the traditional console lifecycle for a more iterative model, mimicking the rhythm of PC hardware releases. This iterative design allows for more frequent updates and could make Xbox games more scalable and future-resistant, as developers might optimise games for multiple 'tiers' of Xbox hardware. Bigger picture: Console meets PC This strategy, if it materialises, could fundamentally shift expectations for console hardware. Historically, consoles like the Xbox or PlayStation stick to one fixed specification until it's completely overhauled. This iterative design blurs that line by combining the reliability of consoles with the cost-effective upgrade path of PCs. While this modular architecture is still speculative (no official confirmation from Microsoft or AMD yet), the possibility it offers — an ever-refreshing, console-like device — sounds good.

Is The Last of Us Season 3 Cancelled? Here Is The Truth

The Last of Us season 3 delays are mainly due to the extended production timelines. One of HBO's most anticipated series, The Last of Us Season 3, has been surrounded by rumours of cancellation following significant production delays. While the network has confirmed the delays, it has also assured fans that the new season remains in development. Still, speculation persists that the series could be discontinued midway. According to a report by International Business Times, the primary reason for the holdup is the extended production timeline. However, fans remain wary, noting that in the past, HBO has discontinued shows after prolonged delays. Has The Last of Us Season 3 Been Cancelled? On various social media platforms, including X and Reddit, fans have been seen holding discussions over the future of the series, with many people comparing The Last of Us to other HBO productions that got discontinued midway. Despite such delays, there is no official cancellation news that has been announced yet. As per reports, HBO content chief Casey Bloys earlier confirmed that the much-awaited third season will come out in 2027, two years after the Season 2 finale, which aired in May 2025. There is no clarity whether the makers will come out with two more seasons or one lengthy season, as, according to Decider, the co-creator of the series, Craig Mazin, is still weighing multiple options. However, for now, the production schedule for season 3 still remains complicated, with shooting locations, visual effects, and the availability of the cast members contributing to the extended timeline. Although the makers have not disclosed any specific shooting dates, Casey Bloys previously mentioned that Season 3 would require significant preparations. As per Entertainment Weekly reports, Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the series, is stepping back, making Craig Mazin the sole showrunner of the upcoming season. What Is The Plot Of The Last of Us? The widely recognised series is based on the award-winning PlayStation video game of the same name. The first season came out on HBO in January 2023 and became a massive hit. The second season premiered in April 2025 and aired until May of this year. Set in the post-apocalyptic America where a mass fungal infection transforms its hosts into zombie-like creatures, the plot revolves around the lives of Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey). The third season of The Last of Us is expected to shift focus to Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), one of the main leads of The Last of Us Part II, marking a major shift away from the Ellie-focused storyline in earlier seasons.
