
Mumbai's Dharavi Redevelopment Project: Use Dharavi land 50-50 for rehabilitation units and for-sale buildings, directs Maharashtra chief minister Fadnavis

has directed Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) to increase the size of rental tenements to 350 sqft for those ineligible for free housing and rehabilitation within Dharavi notified area, and from 405 sq ft to 500 sq ft for residents of planned buildings, details of a May 28 meeting obtained through an RTI application revealed.
He also directed DRP to ensure that the land in Dharavi be equally divided between the rehabilitation section and the for-sale component. The CM further said that the survey of all slums across Mumbai follow the twin digital model adopted in Dharavi.
On May 28, Fadnavis, along with deputy CM Eknath Shinde who handles the housing portfolio, were given a presentation on the Dharavi redevelopment master plan. Fadnavis suggested several changes to it, as per information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by Shiv Sena (UBT) worker Sagar Devre, who has been leading the opposition to the relocation of Dharavi residents in Mulund East.

As per the information obtained under RTI, the master plan for the Dharavi notified area is based on the Development Plan 2016 for Dharavi. "As per instructions issued by the CM at the May 28 meeting, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) has been directed to carry out changes to the master plan. It is yet to be received from the SPV," stated the RTI response.
A spokesperson for the SPV, Navbharat Mega Developer Pvt Ltd, said, "We have not received any communication from the govt or the DRP on these matters so far."

State govt has already earmarked 256 acres of salt pan land at Mulund, Bhandup and Kanjurmarg, and nearly 21.3 acres of Kurla Dairy land for building rental housing. Besides, 215 acres of the Deonar dumping ground and 140 acres of revenue land at Aksai, Madh in Malad West, will also be provided for rental housing. There will be no rental housing in the Dharavi notified area.
All those settled in Dharavi post-2011 and up to Nov 15, 2022, are eligible for rental housing.
Navbharat Mega Developer has announced 300 sq ft homes for rental housing. Govt will decide on the rent and after 10 years, the tenant can own the unit. Govt is also considering providing the option of upfront ownership if the tenant is willing to make a one-time payment of rent for 10 years.
Residents of planned buildings had recently met Shinde and demanded 500 sq ft homes instead of 405 sq ft. "It was former Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale who arranged this meeting for us three months ago. Shinde had assured us we would be provided 500 sq ft homes," said a resident.

What's the latest The amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR) could be introduced as early as Monday, according to a report by The Economic Times. Funding for overseas acquisitions will come from the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), which has a corpus exceeding ₹6,000 crore collected from mining lease holders, who pay 2 per cent of applicable royalty. Flashback The MMDR Act was last amended in 2023. In 2025, the government launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) to establish a framework for self-reliance. The Geological Survey of India has been tasked with 1,200 exploration projects between 2024-25 and 2030-31. With NCMM, the government aims to secure supply from domestic and overseas sources, strengthen value chains, foster innovation, and boost competitiveness in mining, processing, and recycling. India sets sights on critical minerals with law tweaks
New Delhi: The government will likely seek this week Parliament approval for amendments to the mining laws, aimed primarily at allowing state funding for acquisition of overseas critical mineral assets. The proposal has received the necessary approvals within the government and the Bill to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act may be moved in Parliament as early as Monday, a senior official told ET. The government is proposing to fund such acquisitions from collections accrued in the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET). The trust currently has more than ₹6,000 crore in its corpus, collected from mining lease holders who need to deposit 2 per cent of the applicable royalty with it. Boosting Supply Chain This trust will also be renamed to include 'development' in its name, signifying its expanded mandate to cover exploration, acquisition and development of critical mineral assets abroad as well. ET reported in January that fresh amendments are likely to be made this year to the MMDR Act, aimed at boosting critical mineral supply chains. The Act was last amended in 2023. 'The amendment will address the core issue of critical mineral raw material availability,' the official said. Besides financing fresh acquisitions, the Centre is seeking to allow disposal of mineral dumps through lump sum sale from captive mines. 'There are a number of captive mines where huge dumps of minerals have been accumulated which are not usable due to its low grade or unsuitability for the plants,' the official said. Inputs from state governments indicate that more than half the mineral produced is not usable in the captive end-use plants, he said. Existing rules governing captive mines do not allow the disposal of such dumps. The proposed changes will empower states to permit sale of dumps stacked in the leased area on payment of an additional amount, the official added. Regulations are also proposed to be simplified to include newly discovered minerals and contiguous areas to an existing mining lease for a fee. The lease holder for a deep-seated mineral resource may be able to apply for extending the permit to include a contiguous area. This would be a one-time facility and the enhancement would be capped at 10 per cent of the existing leased area.

Financial lapses pile up under Chandigarh Housing Board's roof: RTI
Having rolled out no new housing projects for nearly a decade, the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has also failed to ensure proper handling of public funds, as revealed by documents obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The RTI reply revealed long-pending unsettled staff advances to seven IAS officers, including Amar Nath, Ankur Garg, KS Wahi, late Mohanjit Singh and Varsha Joshi. (HT) As per the balance sheets for 2022-23 and 2023-24, the board has not even finalised its accounts for 2023-24, providing only provisional data. The financial records show that the board has been holding on to stale cheques worth ₹66 lakh, issued to various stakeholders years ago, but never encashed. The RTI reply also reveals long-pending unsettled staff advances to seven IAS officers, including Amar Nath, Ankur Garg, KS Wahi, late Mohanjit Singh and Varsha Joshi. The advances, ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹80,000, have remained outstanding for years. In one case, the board also owes ₹21,000 to former IAS officer Bhupinder Singh. Financial data further shows that while the board's revenue fell from ₹127 crore in 2022-23 to ₹85 crore in 2023–24, certain expenditures ballooned. Diwali gift expenses rose from ₹12.60 lakh in 2022-23 to ₹14.63 lakh in 2023-24, and conveyance costs surged from ₹55 lakh to ₹90 lakh in a single year, despite no new housing projects. RTI activist RK Garg, who procured the data, alleged that these figures pointed to serious financial mismanagement. He called for a five-year audit of the board's accounts by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). 'The public's money needs to be safeguarded,' he said. Repeated attempts to reach CHB secretary Akhil Kumar for comment went unanswered. Established in 1976, with the primary objective of providing reasonably priced and good quality housing in Chandigarh, CHB had last successfully launched a housing scheme in 2016, when it had offered 200 two-bedroom flats in Sector 51 for ₹69 lakh each. With no successful project over the past decade, the board is struggling to justify its existence.
