‘Mrs. Doubtfire' Star Matthew Lawrence Wants to Resurrect Robin Williams' Voice Using AI and Says ‘It Would Be So Cool': ‘He's Gotta Be the Voice of AI'

Yahoo2 days ago
Matthew Lawrence, who was just a pre-teen when he starred opposite Robin Williams in the 1993 blockbuster comedy 'Mrs. Doubtfire,' told Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con that he is interested in resurrecting the late Williams' voice using artificial intelligence. Williams died in August 2014 at 63 years old.
'I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the OK from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic,' Lawrence said. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool.'

Lawrence said that he recently came across an old television commercial that featured voiceover from Williams, which sparked the idea of finding a way to bring the iconic comedian's voice back to life.
'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerized voiceover,' Lawrence said. 'And it always stuck with me. And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of AI, He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.'
Lawrence added the possibilities are endless when it comes bringing Williams' voice back with AI, including having Williams giving you driving directions on your phone. The actor said: 'It would be Robin! It would be so cool. I'm telling you.'
With just over $440 million at the worldwide box office, 'Mrs. Doubtfire' was one of Williams' biggest comedy films. Lawrence told People magazine last year that Williams gave him a 'gift' on set by advising him never to do drugs. Williams battled substance abuse throughout his career. Lawrence cited Williams' advice as the reason he stayed away from drugs as he grew up in Hollywood.
'He was the first adult who really let me in on his condition. Like, full-on let me in,' Lawrence said. 'I mean, as bright as he was on camera — I would go visit him in his trailer to talk to him — it was painful for him. It's really painful for him. He didn't hide it. He talked to me about it.'
Lawrence recalled Williams telling him, 'Don't ever do drugs. Especially cocaine.'
'He was very serious,' Lawrence added. 'He was like, 'You know when you come to my trailer and you see me like that?' He's like, 'That's the reason why. And now I'm fighting for the rest of my life because I spent 10 years doing something very stupid every day. Do not do it.' I stayed away from it because of him.'
Lawrence might not have been cast in 'Mrs. Doubtfire' if it wasn't for Williams in the first place. The actor said that casting for the role of Chris Hillard came down to him and another child star. The studio allegedly preferred the other actor, but that changed after Williams pulled a prank on Lawrence during an audition.
'[Robin] very secretly reached behind my back and pinched me so hard,' Lawrence said, adding the pinch made him shout out in pain. 'The studio started bawling and wept. I got the role because of that little moment over the other boy. It was all Robin Williams. 'I know what I'm going to do to get this kid this job.' Thank you, Rob.'Best of Variety

Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson take chemistry beyond ‘Naked Gun': They're an item

'Naked Gun' co-stars Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are each giving love another shot — and apparently they're doing it together. 'Baywatch' icon Anderson and 'Taken' star Neeson are in a 'budding romance in the early stages' after striking up a connection on their upcoming cop comedy, according to People. A source told the magazine that the actors are 'smitten with each other.' Neither representatives for Anderson, 58, or Neeson, 73, immediately responded Wednesday to The Times' request for comment. The pair of actors, who play love interests in Akiva Schaffer's latest feature, have been singing each other's praises for months but only sparked dating speculation in recent weeks. In the November 2024 edition of People, Anderson and Neeson talked about their on-screen chemistry and their mutual respect. Neeson told the magazine, 'with Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her,' before detailing her work ethic and sense of humor. In turn, Anderson told People at the time that she thought her co-star was 'the perfect gentleman' and was honored to share the screen with him. In Shaffer's 'Naked Gun' reboot, Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr. continuing the legacy of his father, the main character of the original films starring Leslie Nielsen. Anderson, who had a buzz-worthy turn in 'The Last Showgirl' earlier this year, stars as femme fatale Beth Davenport. As promotion for the comedy ramped up in recent months, the stars shared more insight about their dynamic, on- and off-screen. Anderson spoke to Entertainment Weekly in May about bonding with Neeson. 'Our chemistry was clear from the start,' she told the outlet. She added that during filming, they shared a love for 'literature and a good laugh,' and baked goods. The model-actor said she would share her home-baked bread, cookies and muffins with her co-star. Elsewhere in her conversation with EW, Anderson said, 'our relationship stayed 'professionally romantic'' throughout the process. The stars looked especially fond of each other as they hit the red carpet in recent weeks for the film's various premieres in the United Kingdom, New York (pictured above), and Berlin. On Tuesday, the duo appeared on the 'Today Show' and leaned heavily into those dating rumors. In an Instagram post promoting their spot on the morning show, Anderson and Neeson pretend to get caught in the middle of a steamy moment. During their 'Today' interview, Anderson and Neeson jokingly took offense when anchor Craig Melvin asked: 'Are you two an item?' 'Craig,' Neesom says, acting disappointed. 'I don't understand the question,' Anderson responds, smiling at her co-star. Neeson continues to respond to Melvin, explaining 'we met on set and we discovered we had a lovely, budding chemistry ... as two actors.' He added: 'And it was like, 'oh, this is nice.' Let's not mold this. Let's just let it breathe and that's what we did.' After Melvin threw Neeson's answer back at him, the actor suggested the morning news personality was stirring the pot, moving his arms in a circle. Though she kept mostly tight-lipped about the relationship on the 'Today Show' Anderson said in an Instagram post on Tuesday, 'love is in the air.' Oscar-winning 'Schindler's List' star Neeson was previously married to British actor Natasha Richardson, who died in September 2014. They share two sons. Anderson has been married several times. Her first marriage was to rocker Tommy Lee; they were married twice and share two sons. Country rocker Kid Rock, poker player Rick Salomon and builder and bodyguard Dan Hayhurst are also her ex-husbands. 'The Naked Gun' hits theaters Friday.

Crunchyroll Is Bringing Monthly 'Anime Nights' to Theaters Across the U.S. — GeekTyrant

Crunchyroll is about to make your trips to the theater a monthly event. The streaming giant announced during San Diego Comic-Con that it's launching a brand-new program called Crunchyroll Anime Nights, a nationwide theatrical celebration of anime that kicks off this October. Unlike the limited screenings we've been used to in past years, Crunchyroll is going big. Anime movies have already been making huge waves in theaters recently thanks to hits like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 , Demon Slayer: Mugen Train , and more, but now Crunchyroll is making sure there's something for fans to enjoy every single month on the big screen. Crunchyroll describes Anime Nights as a way to 'honor the past, elevate the present, and celebrate the future of anime.' These events will take place on the third Monday of every month across theaters in the United States, and more than 225 theaters nationwide will be part of the program, including major chains like Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, AMC Theatres, Regal, Cinemark Theatres, Harkins Theatres, and Landmark Cinemas. The first event happens on October 20, 2025, featuring the U.S. debut of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to Be Loved . That's just the beginning. November and December already have exciting lineups in store: November 17, 2025 – OVERLORD – A Celebration of the Anime's 10th Anniversary December 15, 2025 – Crunchyroll Anime Nights: Secret Sneak Peek! (Yep, a surprise event teasing new anime before it hits streaming!) Crunchyroll is looking to make this a major part of the anime fan experience, one that could even expand into 2026 with more big premieres and special screenings. Theatrical anime has exploded in popularity over the past few years. What used to be limited to a handful of special screenings has now become a regular fixture in U.S. theaters. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are taking this momentum and turning it into something consistent with a monthly event that gives fans a reason to gather and celebrate their favorite series on the big screen. And Crunchyroll wants this to feel like more than just a movie night. As Mitchel Berger, Executive Vice President of Commerce at Crunchyroll, explains: 'Anime Nights offers more than a screening – it's a shared experience that honors the art form, invites fans into the world of creators, and brings anime to life in a theatrical setting. Crunchyroll is committed to the theatrical experience, and there's something powerful about watching beloved anime surrounded by friends and fellow fans in a theater. It's a unique opportunity to connect to the anime community every month to honor stories they love.' So, starting this fall, anime is taking over theaters in a big way. With Crunchyroll Anime Nights, fans will have a consistent opportunity to enjoy their favorite shows and movies on the big screen, share the experience with the community, and even get sneak peeks at upcoming releases.
