'A coach also needs time': Harbhajan Singh backs split-coaching system as Gautam Gambhir's Test team falters
NEW DELHI: In the wake of India's contrasting fortunes under
Gautam Gambhir
across formats, former India off-spinner
Harbhajan Singh
has advocated for a split-coaching system, suggesting that separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket could be beneficial for the national team.

Gambhir, who took charge as India's head coach following the T20 World Cup 2024, has found early success in the shorter formats. India clinched the
ICC Champions Trophy
under him and have recorded 13 wins and two defeats in T20Is since he took over. However, the same success has eluded the team in Tests, where they are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series against England, following a whitewash by New Zealand and a series defeat to Australia.
Why Team India came to Manchester from London via train and walked in rain
Speaking to India Today, Harbhajan Singh made a compelling case for format-specific coaching roles.
Poll
Should India adopt a split-coaching system for red-ball and white-ball cricket?
Yes, it will enhance performance.
No, one coach is sufficient.
"I feel if it can be implemented, there is nothing wrong in it. You have different teams and different players for formats. If we can do it, it's a good option. It will reduce workload for everyone, including the coaches," Harbhajan said.
He further explained that even coaches require time and mental space to prepare adequately for different formats, and managing all three consistently can be overwhelming.

"Your coach also needs time to prepare for a series. Like five Tests against Australia, then in England, then elsewhere. So the coach can prepare and set out what his team should be. The same goes for a white-ball coach. He will need time to prepare as well," he added.
Highlighting the personal toll coaching can take, he emphasised: "If you overwork one coach for the whole year, he, too, has a family and responsibilities. Traveling constantly with family isn't easy. So yes, if you ask me, splitting red-ball and white-ball coaching is a good move."

IND vs ENG: Navjot Singh Sidhu predicts India's XI for crucial Manchester Test; calls Mohammed Siraj 'unsung hero'
Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill ahead of the fourth Test. (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: As India gear up for a must-win fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has weighed in with his predicted playing XI, calling for Sai Sudharsan's return and expressing doubts over Karun Nair's place in the side. With India trailing 1-2 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the team's selection decisions ahead of Wednesday's Test have become a major talking point — particularly in light of Nitish Reddy's injury and doubts over pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! On his YouTube channel, Sidhu endorsed a lineup that included Sudharsan, dropped after a modest debut (0 and 30) in the first Test, and left out since. 'Karun Nair is a promising cricketer, but his technical weakness has been exposed,' said Sidhu. 'When you think of winning, I ask — what is the fault of Sai Sudharsan?' Did Sai Sudharsan confirm his India Playing XI spot on eve of the match? He hailed Sudharsan's recent domestic and IPL form, saying, 'You have one of the most promising players in India. He's technically sound — low gravity, hand-eye coordination, and head over toe. Why shouldn't he be in the team?' Sidhu's predicted India XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Anshul Kamboj. He also showered praise on Mohammed Siraj, calling him the unsung hero of India's pace unit: 'Siraj has bowled over 900 overs since 2020. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? World University Games fallout: Ministry plans to revamp AIU, SGFI
Representatonal Image New Delhi: The govt is considering disbanding the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and School Games Federation of India (SGFI) over alleged irregularities in their functioning and administrative mismanagement, sources told TOI on Tuesday. With the govt set to introduce the 'National Sports Governance Bill 2025' in Parliament on Wednesday, there was a growing demand in the sports ministry's corridors to establish two new national federations with a professional setup for school and university games, replacing both administratively-marred incumbent sports bodies. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Yes, there's a thought to disband both AIU and SGFI and put two new sports federations in place after holding proper elections and having a right set of people. The ministry has been receiving a lot of complaints from athletes on how AIU and SGFI function. It will take some time, but with a new sports bill around, which will soon become an Act, the time has come to bring more accountability into the functioning of these two bodies,' a ministry official said. 'Both AIU and SGFI are key to India's sporting progress, as they nurture and identify talent at the grassroots level. They play an important role in shaping the country's sports future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo Sadly, both have failed in their duties,' the source added. The development has come at a time when six Indian badminton players were barred from the World University Games (WUG) in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, over an alleged administrative lapse. Originally, a total of 12 players were selected and sent to represent India, but only six were allowed to compete as officials failed to submit all names correctly during the managers' meeting on July 16. Sources alleged that the players who topped the trials were left out of the badminton team despite being part of the squad. The AIU is the nodal body for university level sports in the country. Similarly, India couldn't field an entry in the women's 10,000m and 400m as long-distance runner Seema along with two others and sprinter Devyaniba Zala's names were missing from the start list due to an official error. England vs India Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES, 4th Test: Who will replace Reddy & Akash in India's XI?
ENG vs IND 4th Test Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES: The weather conditions at the Old Trafford will dictate what will be India's XI. England already announced their line-up with only one change In the fourth Test of England vs India Test series, also known as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, captain Shubman Gill has to make a big selection call ahead of toss at 3:30 PM IST, at the Old Trafford in Manchester today. India trailing the five-match series 2-1 and need to make at least two changes in their Playing 11 given Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep, who played third Test, are injured. While Reddy has been ruled out of the series, Akash is not available for selection for 4th test. The injury cloud around the Team India means, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah set to play the Manchester Test, a decision largely dictated by the series situation. With Akash Deep unavailable, the third fast-bowling slot remains undecided. Vice-captain Shubman Gill indicated that a final call will be made just before the toss, with the choice between Prasidh Krishna, who has already featured twice in the series, and newcomer Anshul Kamboj, who recently joined the squad in the UK. Given the weather forecast predicts persistent rain throughout the match, the team management is also assessing the need for an additional spinner. This adds another layer of complexity to the already tricky selection process. Middle-order shifts on the cards Batting changes are also expected, with Nitish Reddy likely to be replaced by a specialist batter, possibly Sai Sudharsan. However, the larger dilemma lies in balancing the lower-middle order. The team must decide whether to retain Washington Sundar for his all-round abilities at No. 8 or bring in Shardul Thakur to bolster the seam attack. Dawson returns as England announce Playing XI Meanwhile, England have taken a more straightforward route, announcing their playing XI in advance. Their only change from the Lord's Test is the inclusion of Liam Dawson, who replaces the injured Shoaib Bashir. The 35-year-old Dawson, making his first Test appearance since 2017, brings left-arm spin to the attack and strengthens the batting unit with his impressive record of 18 first-class centuries. India Squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill(c), Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel. 9:56 AM 4th Test | ENG vs IND Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES Hello and welcome to our live coverage of England vs India playing 11 news for the 4th test, which is scheduled to take place at the Old Trafford in Manchester.
