Patrick Mahomes: "I'm not a big fan" of 18 games

NBC Sports11-07-2025
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the face of the NFL. He's not the face of the NFL's push for an inevitable 18th regular-season game.
In an interview with CNBC Sport, Mahomes addressed the topic of another game that counts.
'I think that you'd have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out,' Mahomes told Alex Sherman of CNBC. 'Because, I mean, you've seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games. And so if there were a way to get to 18 games, I'm not — I'm not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys' bodies.'
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow previously has argued that, if there's another regular-season game, there should be a second bye.
A second bye makes a ton of sense. Yes, the network hated the two-bye season of 1993, because it diluted the number of week-in and week-out games. But there are six more franchises now than there were then.
The other problem is scheduling. The league justifies an 18th game in part by pointing to the reality of a Super Bowl on President's Day Weekend. Adding an extra bye will result in the Super Bowl overshooting President's Day — unless the NFL is willing to revert to the days of Week 1 on Labor Day Weekend. (And maybe it should.)
However it plays out, an 18th game is coming. The only question left is whether the NFL Players Association agrees to it before the 2030 season, or whether the NFL has to lock them out until they inevitably take the best deal on the table before missing game checks in 2031.

Jared Verse exits practice early after bumping knees

The Rams have an injury concern with one of their best defensive players. Via multiple reporters, head coach Sean McVay said in his press conference that edge rusher Jared Verse departed Thursday's practice early after bumping knees with teammate Braden Fiske. McVay added that he wasn't sure of the severity of Verse's injury. But Verse was down for a bit before he was helped off the field and did not return. The No. 19 overall pick of last year's draft, Verse was named the AP defensive rookie of the year after registering 4.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and 18 quarterback hits in his first season with the Rams. He then recorded 2.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, and a fumble returned for a touchdown in a pair of postseason games. Verse earned his first Pro Bowl berth as a rookie as well. Additionally, McVay noted guard Kevin Dotson suffered a chest contusion in Tuesday's joint practice, but should be able to return to practice soon.

Intriguing rookie RB makes one-handed catch, shows off nasty juke at Chiefs training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs have an impressive stable of capable running backs to lead their ground game in 2025, but the most intriguing of the bunch may be rookie rusher Brashard Smith. A former wide receiver-running back hybrid as a collegian, Smith was selected by the Chiefs with the No. 228 pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft after an outstanding career with the Miami Hurricanes and Southern Methodist University Mustangs. During Kansas City's latest practice session at training camp, Smith made a one-handed catch and showed off a nasty juke move that turned the heads of fans in attendance for the Chiefs' workouts. Take a look at Smith's outstanding effort in this video, which was posted to Twitter by Arrowhead Addict contributor Christian Ainsworth: While Smith isn't expected to compete with Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt for the No. 1 spot at the running back position on Kansas City's depth chart, the exciting rookie could earn a role as a rotational or situational pass-catcher out of the backfield if he demonstrates this same kind of explosiveness when the Chiefs face off against the Arizona Cardinals on August 9. Micah Parsons, Jerry Jones aren't at Thursday's Cowboys practice

Micah Parsons has not practiced at Cowboys training camp this summer, but he has been in attendance in street clothes while his teammates go through drills. That changed on Thursday, however. Reporters at the practice noted that Parsons was absent from the workout. Those reporters also noted that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is not at practice either, which sparks thoughts that there may be talks going on about the contract extension that Parsons has been trying to land for a long time. Parsons did make a post to his Instagram story while practice was going on, but it was a repost of someone else from several days ago so it offered no clue as to his location. There's no word about the reason for either absence and contract talks are only one possibility, but anything that leads to an agreement would be a welcome development for Cowboys fans who want to see Parsons at full strength for the start of the regular season.
