Cadillac unveils next-gen electric model that could shake up market: 'May be on the cusp of becoming the dominant EV maker'

Yahoo03-07-2025
Cadillac is making its way in the EV market.
The company has revealed the newest addition to its electric vehicle line, the 2026 Optiq-V. Cadillac's first EV, the Lyriq, debuted in 2022.
The Optiq-V features a 300-mile range, driver assistance, dual motor all-wheel drive, and a North American Charging Standard port. With Dolby Atmos surround sound and a 33-inch LED dashboard display, it has a stylish and advanced interior.
Starting at $54,000, per Electrek, the Optiq-V is just under the average price of a new EV, which is $57,734, according to Kelley Blue Book.
As the price of EVs closes in on that of their gas-powered counterparts, they become an even sweeter deal. Electric vehicle owners "generally spend about 40-65% less annually on fuel costs than gas-powered vehicle drivers do," per the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Installing solar panels can save you even more money by reducing charging costs. With a home solar setup, charging your EV can be completely free. If you're interested in switching to solar power, EnergySage is a great place to start.
With free tools and resources, including installation quotes and savings estimates, EnergySage makes it easy to get the best deal on a solar system. If it isn't in your budget, however, don't fret — you can still save big with a solar leasing program, such as Palmetto's LightReach.
Driving an EV can save you a ton of money, and it's great for the planet, too. Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe pollution, unlike gas-powered cars, which emit "about 400 grams of carbon dioxide per mile," according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
Even when accounting for production-related pollution, including lithium mining, electric vehicles are still far more sustainable than gas cars.
Commenters were excited about the Optiq-V's next-gen features.

Tesla raises eyebrows with sudden change to vehicle offering in key market — here's what's happening

New Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles are no longer available to buy in Europe. On its website, the EV automaker has eliminated the option to customize and purchase these two top-tier models amid sales figures that EV-focused site Electrek recently described as being in "free fall." What's happening? As Electrive reported, Tesla removed its Model S and X models from its configurators in numerous European markets. When prospective car buyers go to Tesla's website, they are directed to the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y options still available for configuration. If someone in Europe tries to order a Model S or Model X, the website sends them to a page to explore the inventory instead. However, Tesla Models S and X are still available to customize and purchase in the U.S. Why are fewer Tesla model options significant? In the U.S., Tesla recently offered enhancements of the Models S and X, with changes to the wheels, paint finishes, and other details. But in Europe, these models have seen only limited success. European Tesla sales have primarily centered on the more popular Models 3 and Y. Additionally, Tesla does not sell its Cybertruck in Europe. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Insurance Savings You Expect Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You Yet this change in European Tesla availability has raised concerns about the overall future of certain models. Fewer EV options available could mean a narrower product range and limited customer choice, potentially deterring buyers looking for specialized features. However, streamlining model options could also be a beneficial manufacturing strategy. For instance, focused model sales in key markets could simplify production, reduce costs associated with inventory and supply chain management, and enable faster production to increase affordability. What's being done to give EV drivers more choice? Fortunately, there are many Tesla options still available today, as well as other brands producing high-quality EVs. Which of these factors is your biggest obstacle to purchasing an EV? Cost concerns Range concerns Performance concerns Already switched Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Other top-selling EV brands include BMW, Ford, GM, and Hyundai. There are plenty of Tesla alternatives available if you have specific ideals in mind with your EV purchase. Yet no matter which brand you choose, the vital thing all EVs have in common is their ability to run on clean energy. When you drive an EV, you can save money on gas and maintenance costs while contributing to a more sustainable planet with less pollution from tailpipe exhaust. Overall, EV demand is increasing significantly. So, despite individual brands' models coming and going, the broader shift to environmentally responsible driving is here to stay. Tested: 2026 Lucid Gravity Dream Edition Is a Magic Bus

A sedan-only lineup is not a winning strategy these days, which is why fledgling automaker Lucid Motors is adding the Gravity SUV, available as either a five- or seven-seater, as a follow-up to its excellent Air sedan. While plenty of us think the Gravity's lozenge form factor and low roof look more minivan than rough-and-tumble SUV, the aerodynamics-first design is great for efficiency and range. While this limited-edition Dream model's summer tires reduce its EPA estimated range figure, the most efficient Grand Touring version earns 450 miles of EPA range, which is 98 percent of what the bluff Cadillac Escalade IQ gets, even though the Lucid has only 60 percent of the Cadillac's battery energy. view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver Despite the low roof, the Gravity's packaging is near-minivan excellent, with a sprawling second row and a third row that's comfortable even for six-plus-footers. Remarkably, the seat cushions are not squashed to the floor to create headroom, so this isn't a knees-in-the-chest situation, either. Interior materials are top-shelf, and the front seats have great wrap-around support. Again, compared with the Escalade iQ, the Gravity has similar passenger space in all three rows, as well as cargo space in back, despite having almost 17 inches less wheelbase and a roofline that's nearly a foot lower. HIGHS: Three roomy rows of seats, Corvette Z06–level acceleration, more fun to drive than other three-row EVs. But enough left-brain talk. Plenty of EVs are quick, but more impressive than the 1070-hp Gravity's 3.1-second rush to 60 mph is the second wave of thrust beyond that speed. The front end lifts, the steering goes light, and the Lucid rockets to an easy 160 mph. Its 10.6-second quarter-mile is neck and neck with a Corvette Z06's, and by 150 mph, the Gravity is nearly a full three seconds ahead. It's the quickest SUV we've ever tested. view interior Photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver view interior Photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver Better than the raw speed is that the Gravity drives with verve heretofore unseen in the ranks of heavy, three-row electric SUVs. It's rare that any vehicle is so unerringly neutral that it wants to go tail out around our 300-foot skidpad—the Toyota GR86 comes to mind—but the Gravity, shockingly, requires countersteer. Its helm is satisfyingly sharp, too, and you can feel the rear-steer system quickening the Gravity's responses. The ride quality is surprisingly reasonable—its air springs no doubt help—especially considering the 22-inch front and 23-inch rear wheels and Pirelli P Zero PZ5 summer tires. And the 1.5-inch-wide front brake rotors look more Le Mans racer than street car—no wonder they haul down the three-ton Gravity with zero fade. LOWS: A few rough edges, lower-spec versions will be better values. There are a few details that feel unfinished. The power mechanism for the second-row seats is loud and moves coarsely, the head-up display is unreadable, the folding mechanism for the third row is wobbly, the lane-centering function can be jerky, and the Gravity erroneously dimmed its infotainment screens repeatedly on a bright summer day. These are issues that the long-standing automakers likely would have addressed, and Lucid could fix at least some of these things with over-the-air software updates. view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver While it remains to be seen how the Gravity might ignite Lucid's sales, as with the Air, lower-powered, less-expensive models will be a much better value. As for its appearance, our staff most frequently compared it to the Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG, a flash-in-the-pan nameplate we loved even if the marketplace didn't. VERDICT: A mega minivan. The case for GM's Mary Barra as one of the greatest automotive CEOs

General Motors' bold agreement to jointly develop five vehicles with Hyundai-Kia solidifies CEO Mary Barra's status as a transformative leader of a company that long seemed adrift. The deal encompasses gasoline, hybrid and electric power trains, deepening the giant automakers' alliance. They expect the vehicles' sales to top 800,000 a year. The vehicles include: The plan leverages each company's strengths. GM will lead development of the midsize pickup platform. Hyundai takes point on the others. The van will be built in the United States as soon as 2028. The other vehicles go on sale in 2028. Expect production in South America. An automaker that pivots News that GM will extend production of the Cadillac XT5 luxury SUV in Spring Hill, Tennessee — with updates to keep it relevant in an intensely competitive segment — is consistent with a hallmark of Barra's tenure. Barra has instilled adaptability in place of a corporate culture that seemed frozen in the headlights of change. Managing change Thus far, GM has managed the transition to electric power better than any mass manufacturer — with the possible exception of its seemingly unflappable partners at Hyundai-Kia. GM has introduced a broad range of appealing EVs — Cadillac Optiq, Vistiq, Lyriq and Escalade IQ; electric versions of the Chevrolet Equinox, Blazer, Silverado; premium EVs at GMC — while continuing to roll out first-rate internal combustion models. That bank shot has kept GM's core moneymaking vehicles fresh and competitive and allowed it to react to changing regulatory and market conditions. With a new generation of full-size pickups and SUVs around the corner, GM's prospects should get brighter over the next four to five years. Barra's leadership — and close collaboration with longtime professional partner, GM President Mark Reuss — has seen the automaker through upheavals ranging from a global pandemic to an administration undoing decades of trade, energy and environmental policy. 2026 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcats: New 'jailbroken' model will offer 6 million customization combos Not every idea worked There have been mistakes. GM grievously underestimated the difficulty it would have building electric vehicle batteries at new U.S. plants. It should have kept the popular, affordable Chevrolet Bolt EV in production at least another 18 months. GM overestimated the adoption pace of electric pickups, but turned that miscalculation to its advantage, sidestepping tariffs by moving full-size pickup production to the plant where it had planned to build EV pickups. Going all-in on EVs left GM with a lack of competitive hybrids. Playing catch-up now, the new ones coming in 18 months or so better be outstanding. Some will likely come from the repurposed Orion Assembly plant. GM's decadelong, $10 billion autonomous-vehicle program continued after Ford and most others bailed out of self-driving cars. Most worrisome, it's unclear whether GM can succeed long-term in China. Despite those missteps, the trend line is positive. GM's leadership has been consistent in an era of upheaval. It invests ambitiously and largely well, developing a sensible and forward-looking range of vehicles and drivetrains. How's the competition doing? Other mass manufacturers have stumbled more. Stocking GM's cupboard Barra built a strong team. GM grew from a company that struggled to attract talent outside the Midwest to one with its pick from top organizations, and it gets raided for talent by the likes of Amazon and eBay. Tellingly, Ford recently named former GM, Amazon and Alto Pharmacy executive Alicia Boler Davis to head its crucial Ford Pro unit. It's time to acknowledge that Barra and Reuss form one of the best C-suite duos in automotive history. They labored together through years when poor planning and financial pressure kept GM from building the best vehicles its people could create. Determined not to go back, they'll be a tough act to follow. Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@ Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan. Read more on autos and sign up for our autos newsletter.
