is officially back on set.
Lionsgate has announced the start of production on "Day Drinker," unveiling a first-look image of the actor in his latest role.
This marks Johnny Depp's significant return to Hollywood following his widely publicized legal battles with ex-wife .
The film, directed by "500 Days of Summer" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" filmmaker Marc Webb, reunites Depp with for their fourth onscreen collaboration, having previously shared the screen in "Blow," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and "Murder on the Orient Express."
Rising star Madelyn Cline joins the cast, alongside Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
Set aboard a private yacht, "Day Drinker" follows a bartender (Cline) who crosses paths with a mysterious guest (Depp). Their encounter spirals into a tangled web involving a criminal figure played by Cruz, revealing unexpected connections between the trio.
Filming is underway in Spain, with a production team stacked with Hollywood heavyweights.
The project is being produced by Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, best known for their work on the "John Wick" franchise, alongside Adam Kolbrenner ("The Tomorrow War," "Free Guy," "Prisoners") and writer-producer Zach Dean, whose latest film "The Gorge" was recently released on Apple TV+.
'This is gonna be fun,' Webb said in a statement, per Variety. 'I'm excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope, and this incredible cast. We're in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell.'
Behind the camera, the creative team includes director of photography Javier Aguirresarobe (ASC, AEC), production designer Jan Roelfs, editor Doc Crotzer (ACE), and costume designer Penny Rose. Casting was led by Hannah Ashby Ward and Alejandro Gil.
"Day Drinker" is executive produced by 30WEST, which is co-presenting the film with Lionsgate. It's the second project to stem from the collaboration between the two companies, following the upcoming "Power Ballad" starring and .
With a high-profile cast, gripping storyline, and Depp back in a lead role, "Day Drinker" is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about thrillers on the horizon.
After weeks of testimony and years of legal battles, Johnny Depp's high-profile defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard concluded with a decisive verdict in his favor.
A seven-person jury unanimously ruled that Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, awarding the actor $10 million in compensatory damages and an additional $5 million in punitive damages.
The trial marked a dramatic chapter in a saga that began more than a decade ago when Depp and Heard first met. Their relationship eventually led to marriage, and then spiraled into a toxic, highly scrutinized breakup. The couple divorced in 2016, but legal disputes continued long after their split, culminating in the defamation case that became a media spectacle.
At the center of the dispute was Heard's 2018 op-ed, in which she described herself as a survivor of domestic violence. Although Depp was not named in the essay, the actor claimed it clearly referenced him and irreparably damaged his career.
Depp sued for $50 million, asserting that Heard's allegations were false and malicious.
The jury agreed, finding that Heard not only failed to prove her abuse claims but also acted with actual malice in publishing the essay. According to the verdict, Heard 'could not substantiate her allegations against Depp' and 'knew her claims of abuse were false when she published her 2018 essay.'
Heard, for her part, countersued Depp for $100 million, focusing on three 2020 statements made by Depp's former attorney Adam Waldman to the Daily Mail, in which he labeled her abuse allegations as a 'hoax.' The jury determined that Depp, through Waldman, defamed Heard on one count and awarded her $2 million in compensatory damages, but no punitive damages.

This Hit Keke Palmer and SZA Movie Has a Whopping 94 Percent on Rotten Tomatoes—and Now It's Getting a Sequel

One of Them Days is officially getting a sequel. The buddy comedy, starring Keke Palmer and SZA that proved to be a sleeper hit at the box office earlier this year, is back in action, according to an exclusive from Variety. The sequel, which Issa Rae is producing, is in early development at TriStar Pictures, and while details of the plot are being kept under wraps, both Palmer and SZA are expected to reprise their roles. One of Them Days debuted with a whopping 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes upon its release, narrowly beating out Mufasa for the number one box office spot over MLK weekend. (The film currently still has a 94 percent on RT.) It also reached the number one spot on Netflix when it made its streaming debut. In the movie, Palmer and SZA star as best friends and roommates, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). They encounter a day of dramatic chaos, as a young woman's boyfriend takes the rent money, putting them in a situation where they have to come up with $1,500 before the end of the day. Considered something of a modern female version of Friday, it also stars notable names like Janelle James, Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow and Katt Williams. One of Them Days was produced by Issa Rae in conjunction with her Hoorae Media production company and directed by Lawrence The Met Museum/Vogue Palmer served as an executive producer as well, telling The Cut in a January 2025 profile: "I had to really be specific about what needed to change, what the jokes were going to say, what story we're telling about where these two characters come from," she told the publication. "I was more than just an actor doing the role. I really cared about the project as a whole. The result is a surprisingly heartfelt buddy comedy that's also a story of gentrification, about community, about joy in the midst of hardship." In my review of the film, I wrote that one of the most enjoyable parts of the film was the slapstick comedy that wasn't traditionally "funny," but became humorous because of how ridiculous it was. And if the sequel follows that same model, it should prove to be just as successful. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here. People deletes Olivia Munn story after Ms. Rachel comments draw 'threats'

In a rare move, People magazine deleted a story from its website on Wednesday after it triggered 'violent' threats against its subject, the actress Olivia Munn, and her family. The story was about Munn's distaste for children's television and bore a headline specifically citing the popular YouTuber Ms. Rachel — which apparently triggered some fans. 'There is no excuse for these abhorrent attacks, and we will always prioritize safety above all else,' the publication acknowledged in a statement explaining the decision to remove a story. It's an unusual move for any news outlet to delete, rather than amend or update, a story — even People, which is generally considered a friendly go-to outlet for celebrities to share their stories. When asked for further information about removing the article, a People representative pointed back to its original statement. The post was drawn from the magazine's recent interview with Munn for a cover story, which published online June 4. The 44-year-old actress, who was promoting her new Apple TV+ series, talked about life with her husband, 42-year-old comedian John Mulaney, their children — a 3-year-old boy and 8-month-old girl — as well as her 2023 breast cancer diagnosis. People also published several separate exclusive items using material from the Munn interview, including one in which she discussed her fertility treatments, and another post headlined, 'Olivia Munn Doesn't Let Her Kids Watch Ms. Rachel. Here's Why.' In the story, according to sites that repeated quotes from it before it was deleted, Munn shared her irritation with children's TV programming. She specifically cited Ms. Rachel, a major celebrity to young children and their parents. 'I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy,' Munn said, and added she was not a fan of 'Blue's Clues' or 'Spider-Man' either. (She did admit a tolerance for 'Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood,' because it helped her son prepare for the arrival of a baby sister.) However, the framing of the People headline drew attention on social media, especially given that Ms. Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, has been in the news for speaking out about the plight of children in Gaza — though it's unclear if this topic was even addressed in the People story. All of this was surely heightened by the strong feelings many fans harbor about Mulaney and Munn's relationship, and its timing relative to his divorce from an artist, Anna Marie Tendler, with her own significant social media following. Various publications and social media accounts started regurgitating Munn's comments, and Accurso herself expressed disappointment when she left a comment on People's Instagram post, now disappeared as well: 'WHO CARES?! I'd rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed — no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!' Accurso wrote, according to multiple reports. 'Not against [Munn] at all and don't care that she doesn't want to watch the show — all my love to her and her family — disappointed in the outlets.' Later, she wrote on her own Instagram account that she and Munn had spoken and were on good terms. 'Please be kind to Olivia & her precious family,' Accurso wrote. 'I don't believe in hate, attacks or hurtful comments.' Munn also criticized the coverage. 'To Ms Rachel and your fans, I hear and respect the passion behind your support. I never anticipated the media would single out one small thing I said and distort it like they have,' she wrote in an Instagram story earlier this week. 'Every parent understands the importance of finding meaningful programming that helps us connect with our kids. I don't want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone.' Mulaney weighed in Wednesday, calling for a stop to the 'violent and threatening' comments that Munn had been receiving in online comments and direct messages. 'An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow — unbelievably — been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza,' he posted on Instagram. 'The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation. You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism.' Accurso has been creating educational children's content on YouTube, where she has more than 15.2 million subscribers, since 2019. With the help of silly and cheerful music, Ms. Rachel teaches children how to spell and use the bathroom, while also offering lessons on emotional support. Outside of her YouTube show, Accurso has been outspoken about Gaza, which led to backlash from right-wing media commentators and StopAntisemitism, a prominent pro-Israel group, which called on the U.S. attorney general to investigate the children's entertainer. (Accurso said earlier this month that she stands against 'all forms of hate.') But, Accurso told WBUR, 'I wouldn't be Ms. Rachel if I didn't deeply care about all kids. And I would risk everything, and I will risk my career over and over to stand up for them.'
