Innocean's Genesis G80 ranks among top 10 most memorable Super Bowl ads

Korea Herald13-02-2025
Innocean, the marketing unit under Hyundai Motor Group, announced Thursday that its 2016 Super Bowl advertisement for Hyundai Motor's Genesis G80 had ranked among the top 10 most memorable Super Bowl commercials of the past decade.
According to a survey released on Feb. 7 by global advertising agency VCCP and marketing consultancy Cowry Consulting, which surveyed 1,000 US adults, "First Date"—featuring Kevin Hart as an overprotective father—took fourth place, following advertisements from Budweiser, Doritos and Heinz.
It was also the only automotive advertisement to make the top 10 among those televised during the NFL championship.
American comic actor Hart portrays an over-the-top father tracking his daughter on first date, seamlessly highlighting the Genesis G80's location tracking feature. The well-structured storyline and humor resonated with audiences, leaving a lasting impression on US consumers.
In 2016, the commercial topped USA Today's annual Super Bowl Ad Meter, a key measure of consumer sentiment toward Super Bowl advertisements. It was the first time a commercial for either a non-US-based company or an automotive brand ranked first since the index was introduced in 1989.
With well over 100 million viewers in the US alone, the Super Bowl is widely regarded as the biggest advertising stage in the world, fetching a premium for the ad spots. Companies paid as much as $8 million for a 30-second slot at this year's Super Bowl.
'Great advertisements stay in consumers' minds no matter how much time passes. Innocean will continue efforts to showcase differentiated creativity in the global market,' said Innocean CEO Lee Yong-woo.

Korean DNA powers Amazon's spy thriller ‘Butterfly'

Actor-director Daniel Dae Kim says 'The show is like me' American spy thriller 'Butterfly,' which heralds Korean screen icon Kim Tae-hee's Hollywood debut, fuses Korean sensibilities with American storytelling. The series follows David Jung (Daniel Dae Kim), a former US intelligence operative who faked his death years ago and who now seeks to reconnect with his daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), an assassin. Kim, who took on the dual roles of executive producer and lead actor for "Butterfly," described the show as a reflection of himself. 'I think the show is a little bit like me,' Kim said during a press conference in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Thursday, describing the series as a hybrid of American blockbuster energy and a deeply personal Korean-rooted perspective. Reflecting on the series' dual heritage, Kim remarked on the production's commitment to Korean talent. 'Usually when American productions come here, they bring all their heads of staff from America and the only Korean people are the lower-level crew members. But here, for us, we did all of our heads of departments as Koreans because I felt that if we're going to tell a story in Korea with Koreans, then we need a Korean staff.' He added that the series explores subtle cultural nuances that neither "Korean Koreans" nor white Americans typically experience, using these small details to enrich the narrative. 'I wanted to talk about a lot of different things about what it felt like to be Asian, Asian-American and in Reinna's case, half-Asian,' he said. 'I felt like the way to do that was to talk about an American character coming back to a place where he looks the same but isn't quite the same as everybody else. And I like the idea that that parallels my own life because I was born in Busan but went to America when I was very young, but it never meant that Korea left my heart.' Kim also highlighted the timing for the series as crucial, noting the global popularity of Korean culture. 'Before, if we wanted to try to do this five or 10 years ago, I don't think there was as much interest in Korea. And so even though I would want to make this story, the studio wouldn't buy it. And so it was the right timing to tell a story that was very important to me.' For Kim Tae-hee, 'Butterfly' offered a fresh opportunity to explore a more grounded, everyday character. 'This particular project was especially fresh and new for me because it's a collaboration between Korea and the US. It felt like such a unique opportunity. On the other hand, the character I play here is, in a way, more ordinary and typical than any I've done before — it's just a regular Korean woman," said Kim Tae-hee. 'For me, being able to stand in front of the camera in an unstyled, natural way was a completely new experience. Personally, that felt very refreshing, though I'm not sure how viewers will perceive it," she added. 'Butterfly' premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Aug. 13 and airs on South Korea's tvN at 10:40 p.m. on Fridays.

BlueOval SK rolls out 1st EV battery product

SK On-Ford joint battery venture in Kentucky seeks customer diversification amid lagging EV growth BlueOval SK, a 50:50 joint venture between Korean battery maker SK On and American automaker Ford, has finally begun commercial production of electric vehicle batteries at its first Kentucky plant amid the prolonged stagnation of the EV market growth. According to BlueOval SK on Tuesday, its first-ever battery to be delivered to Ford rolled off the assembly line at the Kentucky 1 factory in Glendale. The batteries from this production will power the American automaker's electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning. 'We are proud to build batteries at our Kentucky 1 facility that will power next-generation electric vehicles,' BlueOval SK CEO Michael Adams said. 'The start of production is a significant milestone that strengthens our position in the electric vehicle battery market.' BlueOval SK added that the Kentucky 1 plant will also produce batteries for Ford's current E-Transit electric van. SK On and Ford joined hands to set up BlueOval SK in 2022 as they announced a $11.4 billion investment to build three battery production facilities: two in Glendale, Kentucky and one in Stanton, Tennessee. 'Today, Kentucky marks a historic milestone four years in the making as production officially begins at two of the largest battery plants in the world, set to deliver EV batteries that will transform the automotive industry and the future of our commonwealth,' said Kentucky Governor Andrew Beshear. 'This remains the single largest investment in the history of our state, and it sparked a surge of new investment and job announcements that placed Kentucky at the center of EV-related innovation. I am grateful to Ford and SK On leaders for believing in Kentucky and our workforce.' The joint venture's first commercial production has been delayed due to the EV market's slower-than-anticipated growth rate over the last few years. Ford announced earlier this month that it will delay the launch of two new EVs — next-generation models of the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit — to 2028 but instead shift focus to smaller, more affordable cars to launch a midsize, four-door electric pickup in 2027. With the stalling EV demand, Adams, CEO of BlueOval SK, said in an interview with Bloomberg that both SK On and Ford are looking for opportunities for new business and securing new clients is 'fairly high.' There have been rumors that BlueOval SK was nearing a contract to sell batteries to Nissan, but no confirmations were made.
