Florida State among 2026 CB's top five schools
Defensive back Hayward Howard Jr. is seeing his recruitment take off and the Florida State Seminoles are one of the teams leading the charge. They offered him a scholarship on Jan. 16 and he quickly made his way to Tallahassee, to attend their Junior Day last weekend.
It is safe to say that it made quite an impression on the New Orleans, Louisiana native. He discussed his recruitment with Chris Nee of Noles247 and admitted they are one of his top schools.
"I haven't made a top five or anything like that yet, but they will definitely be in my top five," Howard said.
Howard, who is currently unranked in the 247Sports composite rankings, has received six scholarship offers in January alone. The Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Louisville Cardinals, and SMU Mustangs are some of the Power Four schools that have also entered the race for the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder.
While he just started talking with FSU defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr., the two have quickly formed a connection.
"I just met him like two weeks ago and I feel like I've been knowing him for three years," Howard said. "We have a great relationship. Great guy. He will tell you the truth.
This won't be Howard's last trip to Tallahassee as he told Nee that he will return to watch a practice this spring and again in June for an official visit.
FSU has two safeties committed in its 2026 recruiting class but is still looking for its first commitment at cornerback. Howard has the versatility to do both at the next level and FSU will need to keep working to land him.

Oklahoma Sooners add former LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon via transfer portal The Oklahoma Sooners have made their first splash in the 2025 softball transfer portal window with the addition of LSU ace pitcher Sydney Berzon. Berzon announced her commitment via Instagram. Berzon was 18-8 in 2025 with a 2.46 ERA in 30 appearances for the Tigers. She threw 139.1 innings and allowed an opponents batting average of .228. She threw six complete games, including a 199-pitch outing back in May. Berzon recorded 104 strikeouts to just 44 walks on the season. She appeared in 100 games in her three seasons in Baton Rouge, compiling a 52-25 record with a career ERA of 2.02 and 3.2 strikeouts to walks during her career. She was a second-team All-SEC selection in 2025, helping guide the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament. She threw a complete game shutout in an elimination game against UCONN, where she allowed five hits and two walks over seven innings in a 3-0 win. Berzon only threw one other inning in the Baton Rouge regional, coming in for 1.1 and allowing one earned run in a game the Tigers allowed five unearned runs on three errors. With the departure of Sam Landry, the Oklahoma Sooners didn't have a pitcher projected to be on the roster with more than 100 innings pitched in a season at the collegiate level. She'll have just one more season of eligibility in 2026. Texas A&M Faces Setback as star Utility player enters the transfer portal
Texas A&M Faces Setback as star Utility player enters the transfer portal The transfer portal has struck the Texas A&M softball team once again. This time, however, it involves a major contributor expected to play a key leadership role. On Friday afternoon, in a shocking announcement, starting utility player Amari Harper entered her name into the softball transfer portal. The junior was a key contributor all season, routinely delivering clutch hits and showing emerging power by knocking out crucial home runs. While the Aggies have a deep roster and should be able to fill the void, Harper's departure is still a significant loss, especially if head coach Trisha Ford can't find a way to bring her back next season. Every athlete has their reasons for entering the portal, and even though this move is surprising, players must do what they believe is best for their future. Entering the portal doesn't necessarily mean Harper is leaving, but in today's NIL landscape, anything is possible.
