ToU scheme offers smarter energy management for consumers

Focus Malaysia03-07-2025
DOMESTIC and non-domestic low-voltage consumers using smart meters now have the opportunity to benefit from the Time of Use (ToU) scheme, aimed at helping them manage daily energy consumption more efficiently.
According to the official myTNB website, the ToU scheme—also available to customers with Current Transformer (CT) Operated Meters or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) systems—offers greater flexibility for users to manage their energy usage according to their individual needs.
'With the option to schedule electricity usage during cheaper off-peak hours, consumers can now proactively reduce their monthly bills without compromising comfort,' said Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on its official website.
The initiative is part of the Energy Commission's (ST) recent announcement of a new electricity tariff structure that allows consumers to shift their usage to more affordable off-peak periods.
The ToU scheme has been revised and expanded to include longer off-peak periods—the entire day on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as from 10 pm to 2 pm the following day on weekdays (Monday to Friday). Peak hours are from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays.
For instance, consumers who shift the use of household appliances such as washing machines, air conditioners, or electric vehicle (EV) chargers to off-peak hours may enjoy savings on their electricity bills.
'The off-peak energy charge for monthly usage of 1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) and below is set at 24.43 sen/kWh.
'Meanwhile, the peak energy charge for the same monthly usage is 28.52 sen/kWh for ToU consumers, compared to 27.03 sen/kWh for general domestic consumers,' the website explained.
To help users better understand potential savings, TNB has introduced an online Electricity Bill Calculator on the myTNB portal. Consumers can select their preferred tariff and estimate their bill before deciding to switch to the ToU scheme.
Applications to switch to the ToU scheme can be submitted starting July 1, 2025 by emailing the completed application form and required documents to [email protected], or by visiting the nearest Kedai Tenaga.
Online applications via the myTNB portal will be available from Aug 1, 2025.
For more information, visit www.mytnb.com.my/tariff or contact TNB CareLine at 1300-88-5454. Information and assistance are also available at all Kedai Tenaga branches nationwide. ‒ July 3, 2025

TNB may face additional RM2bil tax bill

TNB is facing additional tax assessments of nearly RM8 billion for 2013-2024, said CIMB Securities. PETALING JAYA : Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) may be slapped with hefty tax assessments for 2023 and 2024 amounting to RM2 billion by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), said CIMB Securities. This will potentially be another blow for the power utility company which had been issued notices of additional assessment for 2013 to 2021 amounting to RM5.89 billion. 'If TNB's FY2023-2024 capex provides any indication, we think the additional tax assessment for 2023-2024 could be around RM2 billion, raising the total amount for 2013-2024 to nearly RM8 billion,' it said in a note today. In a worst-case scenario where it has to pay the full amount, CIMB forecasted the impact to TNB's current target price of RM15.75 could result in an 8% to 9% decline. The stock fell 24 sen or 1.76% to RM13.36 today, valuing the group at RM77.88 billion. So far this year, the shares have fallen 9.5%. The research house has maintained its 'buy' call on TNB, stating it is 'reasonably valued and offers steady dividend returns' over the next few years. A taxing month For TNB, it has been a month to forget as far as tax matters are concerned. Last Thursday, it was slapped with a tax bill amounting to RM840.1 million for the year of assessment 2022. This comes on the heels of the Federal Court ruling against TNB on July 2 in its RM1.25 billion tax assessment dispute with LHDN, for YA 2018. With the apex court ruling it is not eligible to claim reinvestment allowance, TNB is now facing a multibillion-ringgit tax bill. The two parties have been in dispute since 2015 over tax assessments, with RM5.05 billion worth of disputed sum still outstanding, according to TNB's 2024 annual report. In a bourse filing last Friday, TNB said it is evaluating legal options available to address the latest tax bill. The company said it has made a new application for investment allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 on July 25. If it succeeds, the impact could be reduced or even eliminated. TNB has said it is in the midst of assessing the full financial implications of the Federal Court's ruling. The utility giant also assured Malaysians its focus remains on its core mission and long-term priorities, with prudent financial management and consistent cash flow underpinning its operations.

August Volatility Looms For KLCI

Bursa Malaysia Global trade negotiations and upcoming central bank decisions are taking center stage, influencing market movements across Asia, the US, and Malaysia. Investors are navigating a complex landscape marked by a crucial tariff deadline, significant earnings reports, and ongoing policy reviews. Asia Markets Dip Amid Caution Ahead of Key Events Asian markets largely ended lower last week, pulling back from recent rallies driven by optimism over US trade talks and strong second-quarter earnings from Wall Street. Momentum faded as caution set in ahead of several pivotal events: a critical tariff deadline on August 1st, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) policy decision on July 31st, and a slew of major US economic data releases and corporate earnings. US Markets buoyed by Earnings and Trade Hopes In contrast, US markets saw a positive finish, with the S&P 500 rising 0.4% to notch another record close and the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 208 points. This ascent was primarily lifted by continued optimism surrounding the earnings season. So far, 80% of S&P 500 companies reporting have surpassed forecasts, with earnings growth tracking at a robust 7.7%, significantly higher than the 5.8% expected at the start of July. Markets also found support from positive trade developments. On July 28th, the US and the European Union reached a hard-fought trade deal, which will see the bloc face 15% tariffs on most of its exports, including automobiles, but crucially staving off a full-blown trade war. This agreement comes less than a week before President Donald Trump's higher tariffs were set to take effect. The week ahead for US investors will be dominated by the busiest stretch of the earnings season, with key reports from tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, along with Boeing, Procter & Gamble, and numerous other prominent companies. On the macro front, attention will be on the FOMC's policy decision (expected to hold rates steady between 4.25%-4.50% according to market analysts), the advance estimate for US Q2 GDP (forecast to rebound to 2.5%), ADP employment figures, monthly payrolls, and ISM manufacturing data. KLCI Pressured by Local and Global Headwinds The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) mirrored the broader Asian sentiment, falling 6.6 points to close at 1,533.8. The local benchmark was particularly weighed down by a sell-off in Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) shares after the utility giant was slapped with a fresh RM840.13 million tax notice from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) for the Year of Assessment (YA) 2022. This comes shortly after TNB lost a significant RM1.25 billion tax dispute for YA 2018 in the Federal Court earlier this month. Sentiment was further dampened by uncertainty surrounding the US-Malaysia trade deal. Malaysia's firm stance on non-tariff barriers reportedly risks excluding it from favorable terms already secured by ASEAN peers such as Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, adding to concerns about its trade competitiveness. Foreign investors continued their net selling, marking a third consecutive week of outflows with a net selling of -RM137 million last week. This brings the July month-to-date net outflow to -RM579 million and the year-to-date figure to a substantial -RM12.7 billion. In contrast, local institutions emerged as net buyers, recording +RM93 million for the week (though their weekly net flow was -RM15 million due to the accounting of market transactions, July MTD: +RM506 million; YTD: +RM10.97 billion), and local retailers also showed resilience with +RM18 million (weekly: +RM106 million, July MTD: +RM73 million; YTD: +RM1.72 billion). Technical Outlook and Market Outlook HLIB Research indicates that the KLCI appears to have found temporary support after rebounding from the 1,510 level. The index remains on the cusp of a potential bullish triangle breakout, provided it avoids a decisive fall below 1,510 and 1,520. A breakout above the downtrend line near 1,551 could revive bullish momentum, targeting resistances at 1,563 (200D MA) and 1,575 (50W MA). Conversely, a significant drop below 1,510 could trigger a deeper pullback towards 1,500 and 1,488. For the upcoming week, the KLCI is expected to trade range-bound between 1,518 and 1,551 as investors digest the FOMC outcome and the ongoing US trade negotiations, including those with Malaysia. Caution is likely to prevail amid expectations of a soft August earnings season and the index's historical underperformance in August (with 10-year, 20-year, and 30-year average declines of -0.7%, -1.2%, and -2.2% respectively). Domestic headwinds from subsidy rationalisation and the potential expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) could further dampen consumer sentiment and earnings visibility, adding to the market's cautious outlook. TNB Shares Slip At Mid-morning After RM840.1 Mln IRB Tax Notice

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) shares slip at mid-morning trading after receiving a notice seeking an additional RM840.1 million in assessment for 2022 from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB). At 10.51 am, the counter fell 18 sen to RM13.42 with a total of 2.91 million shares traded. In a note today, CIMB Securities Bhd said the issue was due to the cumulative amount from notices seeking additional assessment for the years 2013–2021 of RM5.05 billion, net of remission of penalties and RM1.76 billion paid to IRB in December 2020, for 2016-2017, bringing the total to RM5.89 billion to date. 'We believe there is a risk that the IRB may also potentially issue a notice of additional assessment for 2023–2024. 'If TNB's 2023-2024 financial year capital expenditure provides any indication, we think the additional tax assessment for 2023–2024 could be around RM2 billion, which raises the total amount for 2013–2024 to nearly RM8 billion,' it said. The investment bank also said in light of the Federal Court's decision regarding a similar notice for 2018, TNB is currently evaluating its available legal options to address the issue. 'This evaluation takes into consideration that TNB has already applied for investment allowance (IA) under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (including those for 2022) to the Finance Minister,' it said. Therefore, CIMB Securities has maintained a 'Buy' call on TNB with a target price of RM15.75 per share. On July 2, the Federal Court's final ruling allowed the IRB's appeal, overturning the decision by the High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had previously ruled in favour of TNB's judicial review application to set aside the notice of additional assessment amounting to RM1.25 billion for 2018.
