Odisha bids tearful adieu to Pahalgam terror victim Prasant Satpathy; CM announces Rs 20 lakh ex gratia
BHUBANESWAR: The nondescript and quiet Ishani village in Balasore district turned into a river of sorrow and reverence on Thursday as hundreds walked behind the mortal remains of Prasant Satpathy, who fell to terrorists' bullets at Pahalgam in Kashmir, two days back.
His body was taken out in a procession that stretched over a kilometre. The chants of 'Hare Krishna Hare Ram' amidst the rhythmic beating of mridang echoed through the village.
The atmosphere was filled with emotions, and the heart-wrenching sobs of family members and relatives who had watched him grow up.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi flew to Ishani in the morning. He not only paid floral tributes to Prasant's mortal remains but also walked alongside the grieving family, relatives and local residents, a rare gesture that struck an emotional chord.
The chief minister spoke to the family members and announced Rs 20 lakh ex gratia, a job for Prasant's wife and free education for his son.
"This is not just a personal loss to the family but a collective tragedy for the state. We will ensure that the child's future is protected and the family is given all necessary support," he said.
Expressing shock over the cowardly terrorist attack, Majhi said he is deeply saddened and heartbroken.
"May the almighty bestow the family with immense strength and fortitude in these hours of grief. I pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul and express my condolences to the bereaved family, " he said.
Majhi was accompanied by Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and BJP state president Manmohan Samal.
Prasant's body arrived at Bhubaneswar airport in midnight and was brought to Ishani in a special vehicle after Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, and government officials paid tributes.
By morning, the village had swelled with mourners. The funeral procession moved slowly through the lanes of Ishani with people lined up with folded hands and moist eyes, offering prayers and flowers.
His wife Priyadarshini broke down upon seeing the body, clutching her nine-year-old son Tanuj, who looked on, confused and silent, unable to fully grasp the enormity of the loss. He later lit the funeral pyre before the body was consigned to the flames.
Prasant's elder brother, Sushant and younger brother, Jayant are in deep shock ever since they heard the devastating news. 'My brother left for Kashmir with dreams and came back wrapped in a coffin. I still cannot believe he is gone. I will never get a younger brother like him,' Sushant said, holding back tears.
Prasant, who worked at the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET) in Balasore as an accounts assistant, had travelled to Kashmir with his wife and son Tanuj on April 19 for a long-awaited vacation. Pahalgam was the final stop in their itinerary, and they were supposed to return on Wednesday.
The family had just completed a zipline ride in the scenic Baisaran valley when terrorists opened fire. Prasant, struck in the head by a bullet, died an hour later in the arms of his shocked wife.

Bengaluru, June 8 (UNI) Karnataka Opposition Leader R Ashok on Sunday demanded a special session of the Assembly to deliberate on the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede. Addressing a press conference here, Ashok said the House should also discuss the Congress-led government's failures that cost 11 lives ahead of IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations on Wednesday. 'Three separate inquiries have been ordered – which one is genuine? We demand a judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge,' he insisted. Ashok also called for enhanced compensation for the victims' families. 'If the government is truly not at fault, it should give Rs 1 crore per family. As opposition leaders, we will contribute our one month's salary to the families,' he announced. Dismissing the justification for such a grand event, Ashok added, 'Winning a trophy is not new. Other states have won before. But no other CM has ever used such events for cheap publicity.' He accused the state government of flouting police instructions and thereby breaking the law, which led to the stampede. Ashok alleged that the tragedy could have been averted had Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar not been engrossed in a power tussle. 'Instead of mourning the loss of innocent students, they were chasing a trophy. The police had informed the government of a casualty by noon, and yet the programme went on even after eight children had died. This shows how stone-hearted the government is,' he charged. Ashok cited a letter dated June 4, from the Vidhana Soudha police to the Chief Secretary, warning that the programme was being hastily organised, with inadequate staff and serious security concerns. The letter had recommended cancelling the event, yet the government proceeded, he alleged. He further stated that police had clearly instructed against the participation of department staff and their families, but the directive was ignored. 'CCTV deployment was skipped, drones were flown despite prohibition, and the stage – which was to accommodate only 20–30 people – ended up hosting over 200, including 11 players,' he said. Ashok pointed out that while the event was officially listed as a government function, CM Siddaramaiah later disowned it, claiming it was not a government-organised event. Manipur MLAs call on Governor, claim Meitei outfit member among five arrested
A delegation of Manipur MLAs called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday, and one of the legislators claimed after the meeting that altogether five people were arrested in connection with earlier incidents of violence, which triggered widespread protests in the northeastern state. Among the five arrested people, one was apprehended by the CBI , BJP legislator K Ibomcha said. Ibomcha, the Lamlai constituency legislator, said, "During the meeting, we were informed that five people were arrested, and of them, one Kanan Singh, was arrested by the CBI in connection with a case. We appreciate the roles the Arambai Tenggol have taken during the recent flood. Kanan is not arrested by the Manipur Police but by the CBI in connection with one of the cases." The CBI is investigating the Manipur violence cases as per the direction of the Supreme Court, the central agency said in a statement. The trial of the Manipur violence cases has been shifted to Assam 's Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in the state. "The CBI has arrested a member of Arambai Tenggol at Imphal Airport on June 8. He was involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. He has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati, and he will be produced before the competent court for police remand," the statement said. The BJP MLA also claimed, "When we asked about the case in which Kanan was arrested, the authorities concerned said it was not known to them. The four others were arrested by the state police for allegedly being associated with Kanan. They did not have any CBI-related cases. They will be screened if they were involved in any other illegal activities." Congress legislator Th Lokeshwar told reporters, "Kanan was arrested in connection with a case being investigated by CBI and was not picked up for being a member of Arambai Tenggol. We urged the authorities concerned to release the five without any conditions. On the contrary, we requested them to arrest the then home minister, then DGP and other authorities of the then government." More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. Following the arrest of Kanan, his wife Asem Guni told reporters that her husband had joined the "public defence effort at the onset of the ongoing ethnic conflict to protect the state and its territorial integrity".
