
Surging electric truck sales hit diesel use in China
The boom in electric truck sales in China follows that of electric cars and the rise in recent years of LNG-powered heavy trucks. Those factors, combined with slowing economic growth, have stifled its oil consumption growth.
Sales in the world's biggest market for new energy trucks are estimated to have risen 175% year-on-year to 76,100 in the first half of this year, or about a quarter of new truck sales, according to consulting firm Sublime China Information (SCI). Electric models, still mostly used for short-haul runs in ports, mines or steel mills, accounted for over 90% of that increase.
The rapid pace has surprised analysts who have revised down diesel demand forecasts as a result and brought forward their predictions for a peak in Chinese oil demand.
SCI's analyst Xu Lei said he cut the firm's China diesel demand expectations by 1-2% given the boom in electric truck sales.
'The surge in electric heavy trucks was a surprise and has become a new factor accelerating China's oil consumption to peak, most likely this year,' said Ye Lin, vice president at Rystad Energy, who had previously expected a 2026 peak.
The transport sector, which burns about two-thirds of all diesel in China, will use 40% less by 2030, cutting overall diesel consumption by about a quarter compared to 2024 levels, according to Rystad.
Diesel consumption this year is forecast to fall by 11.3 million tons, or 6.3%, on par with last year's drop, according to SCI.
After more than six years behind the wheel of a diesel truck, Li Shuai, who drives for a cement plant in Hebei province near Beijing, switched to an electric truck six months ago.
'Charging infrastructure has improved noticeably in the past half year, making things much more convenient,' Li, 38, said. 'It is even possible to drive an empty truck more than 2,000km from Beijing to Yunnan to pick up goods without worry.'
The rapid buildup of charging infrastructure, primarily through industrial corridors, is underpinning adoption, although charge times that can stretch to 90 minutes and limited charger availability in some areas remain issues.
Teld, an EV charging infrastructure provider that has built more than 2,400 truck charging stations across China, officially opened an 800km corridor in March linking Shanxi and Shandong provinces, a key route via the country's coal-producing region.
At a charging station next to the Hebei cement plant, car and truck chargers sit side by side in the dusty lot. Owner Yongji Liu had originally only planned to service EVs but said 'the electric truck market is growing so fast that we also installed chargers for trucks'.
The booming market for electric trucks is partly due to cheap electricity and government subsidies introduced last July of up to 95,000 yuan (RM56,322) for new vehicles, analysts and truckmakers said.
While diesel trucks are cheaper upfront, higher fuel costs make them more expensive after a million kilometers of driving.
Once fuel is included, diesel trucks cost about 2.25 million yuan at the million-kilometer mark, roughly 10% more than LNG trucks and 15% more than electric trucks, according to GL Consulting.
Rising fuel costs have also eroded some of the price advantage enjoyed by LNG trucks, which along with limited refueling stations in some regions, have hindered their growth, said SCI analyst Wang Neng.
SCI forecasts LNG truck sales to hit around 92,000 units in the first half, down 15% from a year earlier, although the surge in electric adoption is more than offsetting the impact on diesel consumption.
China's second-best-selling electric truck maker Sany says the growth potential for electric trucks is greater than for passenger EVs because lower operating costs bolster the profitability of corporate users. – Reuters

Apple currently produces very few products in the US. — Reuters Apple is trying to bring machine learning to Motor City. The smartphone giant opened its Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit on Tuesday to offer free workshops on artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing to small and medium-sized businesses. Apple stands out as one of the companies most dependent on manufacturing as well as consumers in China. The new academy is a part of Apple's broader US$500-bil (RM2.13 trillion) US investment commitment announced in February. The academy, which will be administered through a partnership with Michigan State University, will provide training on machine learning, automation and digital manufacturing technologies, with Apple experts helping to lead the workshops. "We're thrilled to help even more businesses implement smart manufacturing so they can unlock amazing opportunities for their companies and our country," Sabih Khan, Apple's chief operating officer, said in a news release. The company also will provide consulting services to businesses, available virtually and in person. Apple plans to add online courses this year that will teach skills such as project management and how to optimise manufacturing processes. The announcement comes as Apple faces pressure from President Trump and his supporters to bring more manufacturing jobs to the United States. Trump has called for Apple to move iPhone production stateside and is implementing tariffs that probably will raise the company's costs. On Tuesday, Trump threatened to impose tariffs as high as 25% on Indian imports if the countries cannot complete a trade agreement by Aug 1. The US also has a 30% baseline tariff on Chinese imports that expires August 12, with Trump saying duties could rise again without a new deal. In May, Trump expressed frustration with Tim Cook after the Apple chief executive stated that the company was expanding Indian production to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump said he reminded Cook of Apple's US$500-billion US investment promise and told him: "I don't want you building in India." Apple aims to produce about a quarter of the world's iPhones in India over the next several years as the company works to reduce its heavy reliance on Chinese manufacturing. After building its supply chain in China for decades, Apple has been expanding to other markets including Vietnam and India. Cook has managed his relationship with Trump since the president's first term, building rapport through direct phone calls and meetings. His approach proved effective in 2019 when he lobbied Trump personally to exempt iPhones from China tariffs, arguing that the duties would raise prices and benefit competitors such as Samsung. The Trump administration later excluded iPhones and other electronics from the tariff plan. The Detroit facility builds on Apple's presence in the city, where it already operates an Apple Developer Academy in partnership with Michigan State University that trains about 200 students annually in software development. Aid rises, but economic strain persists
GEORGE TOWN: Although cash aid programmes like Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) are welcomed relief efforts, there are calls for the government to address the root cause of financial hardship in the lower-income group. Housewife Azimah Aziz, 41, said the initiatives are timely, but stressed the need to reduce the impact of rising prices of essential goods. 'While the cash handouts help ease the pressure temporarily, they do not solve the economic challenges that low- and middle-income families face every day. 'Without stronger price controls and a progressive wage system, many Malaysians may remain trapped in a cycle of dependency,' she said. During the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the annual STR and monthly Sara cash aid initiatives would be expanded. The Sara programme will benefit 5.4 million recipients, up from 700,000 previously. It includes a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. Additional cost-saving measures include subsidised public transport and domestic airfares for students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, as well as electricity bill reductions under Tenaga Nasional Bhd's Time-of-Use scheme. Professional photographer Allen Lim, 52, praised the government's support for needy families from the Chinese and Indian communities. 'It is a noble act to address this issue, as the cost of living affects all communities in the country,' he said. New US tariff announcement expected today
PETALING JAYA: The new tariff rate imposed by the United States on Malaysian exports will be known today. US President Donald Trump, who had planned to announce the rate yesterday, will now do so today, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister had spoken on the phone with Trump at 6.50am yesterday, with the two leaders discussing various matters, including the tariffs and Asean. Anwar said they spoke frankly on the new tariff rates, in the spirit of free trade principles, as they had done after discussions led by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, the US Trade Representative, and the US Secretary of Commerce. 'After clarifications I provided, he decided to postpone the announcement until Friday. 'We pray the tariff rate will help and not burden our economy,' Anwar said when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, however cautioned that Malaysians must remain vigilant as consumer prices could rise if the tariff measures fall short of expectations. 'Prices of goods and other costs may rise if tariffs do not turn out as expected. 'That's why it is important to build domestic resilience. It's a strength we must develop,' added Anwar. Malaysia is seeking lower tariffs while maintaining measures that the United States deems as barriers, such as halal certification, foreign equity ownership and government procurement policies. Anwar also confirmed that Trump will attend the 47th Asean Summit in October. 'I said okay, Mr President. I will announce this in Parliament,' added Anwar. He said Trump had extended his congratulations on Malaysia's mediation in the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. 'This was due to the Asean consensus and the positive attitude of both countries, as well as the cooperation shown by the United States and China, specifically Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping,' added Anwar. Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an unconditional ceasefire following peace talks in Malaysia to end the fighting in disputed zones along their 800km border. At least 38 people have been killed in five days of clashes, with nearly 300,000 more displaced. On July 29, a special meeting, brokered by Anwar in his capacity as the current Asean Chair, was held at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. Also in attendance were US Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The two South-East Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over the 817km undemarcated stretch of shared border.
