Roma nearing move for Hellas Verona's Daniele Ghilardi

Yahoo22-07-2025
Serie A giants Roma are making key progress in a move for Hellas Verona's Daniele Ghilardi.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that with Evan Ferguson and Neil El Aynaoui sealed, Roma are working to sign a centre-back and negotiations with Verona have progressed quite quickly.
Ghilardi has agreed to sign a five-year deal with Gian Piero Gasperini's side and his willingness is proving key in the transfer. Ricky Massara has beaten competition from Real Betis in the chase for the Italian already, with Verona looking at a fee of €12 million and they are open to an obligation to buy.
Roma have come very close to their demands and made a new offer late last night and an agreement can be reached soon. Gian Piero Gasperini has been left surprised by the defender's performances at the U21s European Championships, with Ghilardi having been excluded from Verona's pre-season game yesterday.

Barcelona agree shirt sponsorship deal with DR Congo

Barcelona players will have "DR Congo - Heart of Africa" emblazoned on the back of their training shirts from the start of next season, after the top Spanish football team agreed on a four-year deal with the central African country. The partnership will reportedly cost the Democratic Republic of Congo 44m euros ($50m; £38m), although the club has not disclosed the amount it will receive. The arrangement has faced criticism from some Congolese who have questioned their government's priorities, especially as its domestic football league has been plagued by chronic underfunding for years. But the authorities have defended the agreement, saying that it will help raise the profile of the country. As part of the deal, Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium will host what the club called an "immersive exhibition... to showcase the cultural diversity and sporting tradition" of DR Congo. The country's Sports Minister Didier Budimbu told BBC Focus on Africa that the agreement includes a training camp for 50 young Congolese players and 10 coaches. Barcelona says it will also run camps for children across a range of sports, including basketball, handball and roller hockey. DR Congo has signed similar deals with Italian side AC Milan and French team AS Monaco. Last month, Budimbu described them as part of a strategy to "reposition" DR Congo as a leader in tourism and investment opportunities. Since 2018, DR Congo's regional rival Rwanda has had a sponsorship deal with English side Arsenal promoting tourism in the country with the slogan "Visit Rwanda" on the sleeves of the players' shirts. French team Paris St-Germain and German side Bayern Munich have similar deals. These have also come under fire, especially recently as Rwanda has been accused of backing rebels in DR Congo in a devastating conflict in the east, which it denies. In February, DR Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner wrote to the clubs questioning the "morality" of the arrangement. The Rwandan government dismissed the accusations of sports-washing as a "distraction". In June Rwanda and the DR Congo signed a peace deal aimed at ending decades of the devastating conflict. In 2023, a deal that South Africa's tourism board pursued with Tottenham Hotspur did not come to fruition after complaints from the public. Despite similar noises from some quarters in DR Congo, this arrangement has gone ahead. Since the onset of Covid-19, the country's national football league has struggled, mostly for lack of funding for travel across the vast country. Some critics have expressed concern that the European deals could overshadow the conflict in the east and the government's troubling human rights record. 2025 Hall of Fame: Antonio Gates was a pretty good tight end for a college power forward

Four men will be formally enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday in Canton, Ohio. Yahoo Sports will take a relatively short look at each legend and how he reached football immortality. [More on Hall of Famers: Sterling Sharpe | Jared Allen] There's a typical path for NFL players. They play college football, get drafted and then earn their way onto a roster. Antonio Gates wasn't drafted. And he didn't play college football. Somehow he became a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Gates' path to the Hall of Fame is literally unlike any other. The longtime Chargers tight end is the first one to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player without appearing in a college football game, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. There's at least a little more history for undrafted players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Before Gates, 22 players went from undrafted to a bust in Canton. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] There are very few players through NFL history who simply made it on a pro roster without playing a down of college football. Gates became one of the best ever without a college football background. Some Hall of Famers played at small schools, and a few came up through junior college. There are some Hall of Famers who played at a school that discontinued its football program, and a few played at schools that don't exist anymore. But all of them played football on that level. Most players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame are also in the College Football Hall of Fame. Usually great pro football players were great college players, too. Gates was a great college player. Just not at football. Antonio Gates' basketball background Gates was part of a legendary basketball team at Kent State. In his junior season, he led the Golden Flashes to their first conference championship, then on an improbable run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. He averaged 16 points and 8.1 rebounds a game as a junior, and then 20.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists as a senior. He's one of five Kent State basketball players to have their number retired by the school. Gates was undersized to be considered an NBA power forward, at 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, but had the size to be an NFL tight end. He also had a football background, though not in college. He was recruited by Nick Saban to play football at Michigan State, but he wanted to play basketball too and Saban wouldn't let him, leading to Gates transferring. When Gates was done with hoops at Kent State, he tried out for NFL teams. The size and athletic ability had many teams interested in him as a project, and the Chargers signed him after the 2003 NFL Draft. It's hard enough for an undrafted rookie to make it in the NFL, and much harder for one that hadn't played football since high school. But Gates made the team and held his own as a rookie, bringing in 24 passes for 389 yards while starting 11 games. That alone would be an unbelievable story. Then, in Gates' second season, he was the best tight end in the NFL, less than two years removed from scoring more than 20 points per game in basketball. Gates sets records at tight end Gates was first-team All-Pro in 2004, setting an NFL record for tight ends with 13 touchdown catches. That was the first of three straight seasons in which he was recognized as the best tight end in the NFL. Gates finished his career with 116 touchdown receptions, seventh-most in NFL history and the most for any tight end. He had five more TD catches than Tony Gonzalez. Gates is the Chargers' all-time leader in receptions (955) and yards (11,841). He also paved the way for other college basketball players to get opportunities from NFL teams looking for the next Antonio Gates. But, in many ways, Gates was one of one. We might never see another player to not play a down of college football and end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player. Gates' journey was borderline miraculous. "I think it was just a surreal moment for the most part because you work so hard to reach a level in sports," Gates told about his election in the Hall of Fame. "Then you talk about the Hall of Fame, it's like a funnel, and you know how many people get out of the bottom of that funnel. It starts wide and gets really small. "To be sitting in football heaven, words can't really describe it."

Napoli closing in double swoop for Miguel Gutierrez and Juanlu Sanchez

Napoli are reportedly close to securing deals for Spanish defenders Miguel Gutierrez and Juanlu Sanchez. The Serie A champions are working on strengthening the full-back positions this summer as they look to build a formidable squad ahead of the new season. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto claims that Napoli have reached a verbal agreement with Girona for the signing of left-back Gutierrez. The Partenopei are working on the personal terms for the Spaniard before finalising the deal, which could cost between €25-30 million. The Scudetto winners have been tracking Gutierrez throughout this summer and have beaten the likes of AC Milan and Juventus for his signing. The 24-year-old has developed into one of the most promising full-backs in Spain, playing a pivotal role in Girona's resurgence. He has racked up six goals and 19 assists in 112 appearances for the Catalan club. Real Madrid had a buy-back clause worth €8 million for Gutierrez, but they decided to sign Alvaro Carreras from Benfica for €50 million. Gutierrez is an attacking-minded full-back who can also play as a winger. His athleticism, combined with his excellent ball control, passing range and dribbling, makes him a dangerous outlet in the final third. He will compete with Leonardo Spinazzola for the left-back spot if Napoli complete the deal for the Spaniard. Meanwhile, Napoli have found a breakthrough in their transfer talks with Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez. As per La Gazetta dello Sport, Antonio Conte's side have tabled an offer worth €17 million, which could be enough to seal a deal with financially-struggling Sevilla. The 21-year-old, who won the Gold medal with Spain in the Paris Olympics last year, has given the green light to move to Diego Maradona Stadium. Conte's men have completed the signings of Kevin De Bruyne, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, Noa Lang, Sam Buekema, Lorenzo Lucca and Luca Marianucci.
