Renewed Fire at Ramses Central in Cairo Quickly Contained, Officials Say

Taarek Refaat
A limited fire broke out Friday at the Ramses Central exchange building in downtown Cairo, reigniting concerns just days after a major blaze paralyzed one of Egypt's primary telecommunications hubs. Authorities confirmed the renewed fire was quickly extinguished and was a residual effect of Monday's catastrophic incident.
Firefighters responded promptly to the scene and brought the situation under control before the flames could cause further structural damage or disrupt newly restored services. No injuries have been reported.
According to officials, the fresh flare-up was sparked by smoldering debris left behind from the earlier fire, which burned for nearly 18 hours earlier this week. That initial blaze knocked the Ramses Central completely offline, disrupting fixed-line internet, landline, and mobile services, as well as financial transactions including ATMs and e-payments. Air travel and banking services also experienced temporary interruptions.
Following the shutdown, authorities redirected some telecom operations to the nearby Rod El Farag Central. While several services have resumed, the government said full network normalization is expected within hours.
The Ramses Central remains one of Egypt's most vital telecom infrastructures, and the recurrence of fire—however limited—has triggered fresh calls for comprehensive inspections and improved safety protocols.
A formal investigation into the cause of the initial fire and the delayed extinguishment is ongoing.

Trump Approves $200 Mln Ballroom for White House Entertainment

Israa Farhan The White House is set for a significant expansion with the construction of a new $200 million grand ballroom, scheduled to begin in September and expected to be completed before the end of President Donald Trump's term in early 2029. This major project represents the first structural addition to the presidential residence since the Truman Balcony was added in 1948. The initiative follows Trump's return to office in January, during which he has already launched multiple renovations, including dramatic changes to the Oval Office with gold decor, historical portraits, statues, and large American flagpoles installed in the north and south gardens. A stone replacement of the Rose Garden is also underway. The new ballroom will cover approximately 90,000 square feet (around 8,300 square meters) and will have capacity for up to 650 guests. As part of the expansion, the East Wing of the White House will undergo a full modernization. Staff based in the East Wing, including aides to First Lady Melania Trump, will be temporarily relocated during the construction period. The ballroom aims to serve as a central space for hosting large-scale events, state functions, and official ceremonies. The project comes in response to Trump's consistent dissatisfaction with the White House's current entertainment capacity. Funding for the ballroom will be provided through private sources, including President Trump and supporting donors. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Heathrow Airport Expansion to Cost £49 Billion

Israa Farhan Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest hub by passenger numbers, has announced an ambitious £49 billion expansion and modernization plan, which includes the construction of a long-debated third runway. The entire project will be funded by private sector investment. The airport's Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Woldbye, stated on Friday that the expansion is now more vital than ever, as Heathrow is operating at full capacity. The upgrade aims to significantly enhance the UK capital's global competitiveness in trade and transport. Despite years of legal battles and continued resistance from environmental campaigners, residents, and even London Mayor Sadiq Khan alongside members of the ruling Labor Party, the British government approved the new runway plan in January. According to the announcement, the expansion is set to double Heathrow's annual passenger capacity from 84 million to 150 million. The construction and operational launch of the third runway is scheduled to take place over the next decade. Of the total investment, £21 billion will be allocated directly to the new runway, while the remaining funds will be used for broader airport upgrades and modernization, a process expected to continue over the coming decades. The project has faced legal and political hurdles for years. In late 2020, the UK Supreme Court gave the green light for the third runway after a protracted legal dispute. However, the pandemic significantly delayed progress. The Heathrow Airport Holdings Group, overseeing the project, is majority-owned by international investors. French infrastructure firm Ardian holds the largest share at 32.6%, followed by the Qatar Investment Authority at 20%, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund with a 15% stake. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Investment Decision on Kronos Gas Field Could Be Reached as Early as this Year, Cyprus Energy Minister Says

Yara Sameh Energy Minister George Papanastasiou on Thursday said the next couple of months will see crucial developments regarding the future commercialisation of the Kronos offshore gas field. Papanastasiou added that important talks were held in Nicosia last week between himself and Karim Badawi, Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The talks were attended by senior officers of energy companies ENI and Total Energies – the consortium that holds the concession on offshore Block 6 where the Kronos reservoir is located. Discovered in 2022, Kronos is estimated to hold over 3 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. The reservoir was subsequently appraised in 2024. A development agreement between ENI and Total Energies, along with the governments of Cyprus and Egypt, outlines plans to process and export the gas through Egypt's existing infrastructure. In February 2025 the governments of Cyprus and Egypt, plus the Block 6 consortium, signed a 'host government' agreement. It sets out Egypt as the 'host government' for Block 6 and the Kronos, Zeus, and Calypso gas fields, which are present under its seabed, meaning that the gas extracted will be sent to the Segas liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Egyptian port city of Damietta for liquefaction. Papanastasiou revealed that already important commercial agreements have been 'formulated' between the investors (the two energy companies) and Egypt. The deals cover the entire spectrum of the supply chain, from the export of the natural gas up to its liquefaction at the facilities in Damietta. At the same time, a separate gas sales deal is being drafted between Cyprus and the investors. The minister said that the final draft should be ready by the end of August. 'September will be a month of talks aimed at getting signatures by the end of October,' stated Papanastasiou. Meantime, ENI and Total Energies have submitted to the Cypriot government a draft development and production plan for the Kronos gas play. The plan outlines both the technical aspects as well as the commercial aspect. The minister revealed that the two companies intend to take a final investment decision for Kronos sometime within the year. He described that timeline as 'difficult but feasible'. If all goes smoothly, he added, 2027 could be the year for the first flow of natural gas from Kronos. 'What's significant is that 100 per cent of the gas will go to liquefaction and export.' read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
