
Watch: Xiaomi's SU7 Ultra snatches EV record fat the Nürburgring
With a lap time of 7:04.957, the production-spec SU7 Ultra went quicker than the Rimac Nevera and Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. To put that in perspective, the Nevera previously lapped the track in 7:05.298, and the Taycan Turbo GT managed 7:07.55. This makes the Xiaomi the quickest production EV around the 'Ring so far. The car used for the lap was a full production model, though fitted with the brand's optional track package. It's still nearly 18 seconds slower than the heavily modified prototype that ran last year, but beating Porsche and Rimac in a showroom-ready car is a strong statement that the Chinese brand wanted to make.
The company hasn't named the driver behind the wheel, but it did release full onboard footage of the run. That video, now on the official Nürburgring YouTube channel, shows the car hitting 345km/h on the long straight. Xiaomi claims a top speed of 350km/h, so it wasn't far off. Power comes from three electric motors delivering up to 1 138kW and 1 770Nm of torque. The 0 to 100km/h sprint takes just 1.89s. But not all that power is available from the start. Out of the box, the car is limited to around 662kW. To unlock the rest, owners need to complete a qualifying lap on a Xiaomi-approved track. Once verified, the car enables full performance through a software update.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun says this is just the beginning. With a record-breaking lap already under its belt, the SU7 Ultra shows the company isn't just testing the waters, it's diving straight in.

Will Suzuki build cars in SA? Minister Tau engaging with carmakers as tariff debate rages
Donald Trump's automotive tariffs, while only affecting the Mercedes-Benz operations in South Africa, have sparked conversations on whether the government is sufficiently protecting own market. According to Lightstone, around 37% of the vehicles that South Africans purchase are locally produced, while a significant 36% are imported from India and 11% from China. At a media event outlining South Africa's response to Donald Trump's tariffs, held in Pretoria on Tuesday, Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau, revealed some interesting insights into the country's plan for the automotive industry. Asked whether the government was considering raising the import tariffs on Indian and Chinese vehicles in order to prevent our market from being flooded, Tau did not rule out such a move but said the Department of Trade, Industry and Commerce (DTIC) was not in favour of punitive measures. 'With regards to Chinese and Indian auto, it is a discussion that we're currently having with the intention of taking a less punitive approach, but rather taking a more proactive approach of getting some of those products manufactured in the country.' Tau said many Chinese manufacturers had expressed interest in establishing themselves in the country and were making contributions towards a revised Automotive Production and Development Program (APDP), which is currently under review. Tau said he could not comment on what the actual decision would be, regarding tariffs, but added that it was the government's intention to accelerate the policy development process and related instruments in the implementation of the APDP. Discussions with Suzuki Auto Earlier this year Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa revealed that at least three Chinese car manufacturers were considering setting up vehicle production facilities in South Africa. Interestingly, the DTIC has also been engaging with Suzuki Auto, which recently became the country's second best-selling brand, thanks largely to an affordable product portfolio sourced almost entirely from its Maruti Suzuki division in India. 'I should say that we spoke about the Chinese, but in the next two weeks, we'll also be engaging with both Japan and India. You would know that Suzuki has a great presence in the country right now, and we will be visiting. 'So whilst it's a Japanese company, they're exporting from India to the South African market. So we'll be touching (base with) both the parent company and the company that's exporting into the South African market to see how we can cooperate and collaborate, on the basis of seeking to attract them as an investor into our country. 'So we're not holding the stick as a starting point. We start with the carrot and then balance it with the stick," Tau concluded.

China deploys robot antelope in Tibet to surveil real herds
Developed by Xinhua, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Hangzhou-based DEEP Robotics, the robot antelope is equipped with 5G connectivity and artificial intelligence vision systems, enabling real-time monitoring of the migration, feeding and mating behaviours of the endangered species endemic to Tibet. China is offering its robotics industry tens of billions in subsidies and was host to the 2025 World Robot Conference, which wrapped up on Tuesday. 5G arrived in Tibet in 2019, according to Chinese government documents, and the southwestern region reached 1-million users by 2022. With the completion of a 5G base station in the town of Gogmo in late 2023, every district in Tibet was covered, state media reported. Beyond transmitting live images and tracking data on rare antelope species, Tibet's 5G infrastructure now supports a growing range of AI applications — from small drones that can operate in areas impenetrable to radar, to telemedicine consultations and smart yak herding technologies, according to Chinese state media reports. China has invested heavily in Tibet, boosting the at times restive region's role in President Xi Jinping's flagship Belt and Road infrastructure initiative by strengthening its trade ties with Central Asia, while also tightening surveillance over its population and extending Beijing's digital footprint towards neighbouring rival India.
