As tensions ease, Rajasthan Congress's discordant note: ‘Officials who support Cong posted at border'

Indian Express13-05-2025
The Congress in Rajasthan has accused the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP government of 'bias' in postings in districts along the International Border (IB) during the recent escalation in tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Speaking with journalists, state Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra said, 'Rajasthan mein aise listein chaant chaant ke, ye Congressi prashtbhumi ka vyakti hai; ye BJP ke MLA ne kaha hai, isko lagao, isko mat lagao, uss tarah se wahan par duty lagai gayi hai (They have sifted through the lists, and with instructions from BJP MLAs, posted people who are associated with the Congress on the border).'
Claiming that officials 'out of favour with the ruling party', or 'Congress-leaning' were sent to border districts, Dotasra said: 'Why were Health Department doctors sitting with APO (Awaiting Posting Order) for six months? It is good to post people from every department at the border, and our people are ready to go to the border and also enroll in the Army. But there has been politics in this too,' he said.
Over the past few days, while the state was witnessing a flare up on the IB, the Rajasthan government moved quickly to fill vacant posts in border districts to deal with any eventuality. This included appointment of Sub-Divisional Officers, Tehsildars, Naib Tehsildars, and officials in electricity, Water, health, medical departments, etc.
Other additional resources, such as fire brigades, ambulances, and extra personnel from the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Border Home Guard, were also mobilised to border districts like Barmer, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Sri Ganganagar, among others.
Dotasra gave the example of a woman veterinarian doctor who, according to him, 'was posted away from her kids, simply because she has a Congress background and not the BJP'.
Urging the BJP government, 'which is talking about fighting and winning wars,' to 'fix its mindset first', Dotasra said: 'The Congress has no objection to appointing anyone anywhere, but the motive behind it should be good.'
According to Section 7 of the Rajasthan Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1971, government employees are prohibited from taking part in politics, being a member of a political party, or getting involved in any political activity, etc. In 1972, the Rajasthan government clarified that the RSS and Jamaat-e-Islami too fall under this bracket, and in 1981, added another 17 organisations to the list.
Last year, following in the footsteps of several other states, the Rajasthan government lifted its ban on government employees taking part in activities of the RSS.
Countering the Congress's allegations, state BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj said a government employee 'is not a Congress or BJP person'. 'If Dotasra is saying so, it proves that they have politicised government employees and bureaucrats. Secondly, in the BJP government, no government employee or bureaucrat is transferred on the basis of ideology. Dotasra wants to stay in the headlines, hence he keeps making such false statements,' Bhardwaj said.

FIR against party leader over ‘A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb', Samajwadi Party chief hits back

After an FIR was filed against Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Farhad Alam Gada in Saharanpur district for allegedly teaching children a 'politicised' version of the English alphabet, SP national president Akhilesh Yadav accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being 'anti-education.' Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP of bein g 'anti-education'. (HT FILE PHOTO) The complaint, filed by Main Singh of Kallarpur Gurjar village at Kotwali Dehat police station, alleged that Farhad Gada had been conducting informal lessons at a so-called 'PDA Pathshala' set up at his home in Ramnagar. The controversy erupted after a video of one such class surfaced on social media. In the footage, schoolchildren—wearing uniforms and reportedly from a private school—were seen being taught alternative alphabet associations such as: A for Akhilesh, B for Babasaheb (Ambedkar), D for Dimple (Yadav) and M for Mulayam Singh Yadav. The complaint also mentioned that comparing Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar to Akhilesh and Dimple was an insult to the Dalit icon. According to police officials, the content raised concerns of political indoctrination of minors, prompting the registration of a case under relevant sections, including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 353(2) (statements conducing to public mischief) and section 3(2)(V) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Farhad Gada, who runs the PDA Pathshala—named after the SP's social justice plank 'Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak' (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities) plank—defended the lessons. He claimed the goal was not merely to teach ABCs but to 'educate children about the great men of Samajwadi ideology' and foster political awareness from a young age. Gada also revealed his ambition to expand such schools throughout the district. Taking to the social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public.'

‘Opposition loves anti-national forces, sees reflection in them': Delhi CM amid praise for Op Sindoor, PM Modi

Even as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday lashed out at the Opposition parties and hailed Operation Sindoor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for protecting the dignity 'of our sisters', Leader of Opposition Atishi questioned the imposition of ceasefire during the military operation. The political war of words happened on Monday in the Assembly as the Monsoon session began. 'Operation Sindoor was a response to the silent suffering of India's daughters and sisters. By acting as a courageous father, a compassionate brother, and a resolute national leader, the Prime Minister has upheld the dignity and empowered the spirit of Indian women,' the CM remarked. The operation by the tri-services was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. Her remarks came as she addressed the House during a debate on Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, in which the perpetrators of the terror attack were killed recently. Calling the Operation Sindoor a 'befitting reply' to Pakistan, the CM stepped up the attack on the Opposition. 'These people (Opposition) do not love Bharat, but they love anti-national forces because they see their own reflection in them. They are not inspired by India's progress — they would rather see the nation held back,' she claimed. Hitting out at the Congress-led INDIA bloc, she said, 'The Opposition parties came together to form an alliance. Only its name has INDIA in it but if you listen to them, they sound as if they are the spokesperson of Pakistan…they even raised numerous questions on Operation Sindoor in Parliament recently…They don't trust their own military and refuse to believe their own Prime Minister, and instead place their faith in foreign powers.' She stressed that the Indian armed forces continue to defend the nation with the same courage and commitment they displayed during the wars of 1965 and 1971. 'Why did our governments return captured territories under pressure after the 1965 war? Why did we accept mediation from the United Nations and the United States? And in 1971, after capturing 93,000 Pakistani soldiers, why were they released unconditionally?' she asked, attacking the previous Congress-led governments. On the other hand, former CM and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi questioned the imposition of the ceasefire. 'Our army could have decisively wiped out Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, but that didn't happen because of BJP's cowardice. PM Narendra Modi got scared of US President Trump's threats. Trump has publicly said over 25 times that he threatened to shut down trade — that is why India backed out,' she alleged. AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha also questioned the declaration of ceasefire and used words that the Speaker directed to be expunged from the records after he allegedly made a derogatory statement against the PM. Meanwhile, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood tabled the Bill to regulate fee hike by private schools in the Capital. He also claimed that they got 'threats' from education mafias against the BIll.

DMK, Cong back TMC, slam Del cops for calling Bengali ‘B'deshi'

Kolkata: DMK, Congress, CPIML Liberation and even BJP's Tripura ally Tipra Motha joined TMC on Monday to protest against the Delhi Police notice that called Bengali a "Bangladeshi language", and criticised BJP's Amit Malviya for saying "Bengali is not a language". Tamil Nadu CM and DMK chief MK Stalin, in a post on X, said, "The Delhi Police, under the Union Home Ministry, described Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language.' This is a direct insult to the very language in which our National Anthem was written. Such statements are not inadvertent errors or slips. They expose the dark mindset of a regime that consistently undermines diversity and weaponises identity." "In the face of this assault on non-Hindi languages, CM Mamata Banerjee Didi stands as a shield for the language and the people of West Bengal. She will not let this attack pass without a fitting response," Stalin added. Today, the BJP IT cell insults the Bengali language spoken by lakhs of people in Tripura, Meghalaya, and the Barak Valley of Assam." "First, the BJP asks the Bengali people to declare themselves as Bangladeshis through the CAA, and now the party insults their language as being foreign. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The BJP does not want a united India. They are only interested in reopening old scars," he added. CPIML Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya took a dig at Delhi Police on X."So, for Delhi Police, Bangla or Bengali has now become 'Bangladeshi national language'! The persecution of Bengali-speaking migrant workers as 'suspected Bangladeshi nationals' has now become an outright negation of India's second most spoken language as 'Bangladeshi language'," he said. Tipra chief Pradyot Debbarma, in an X post, said, "Referring to Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language' by Delhi Police is deeply concerning. Today it is Bengali, tomorrow it can be any other language. There is no such thing as Bangladeshi language." Meanwhile, Trinamool on Monday launched a sharp attack on Malviya, BJP's Bengal minder. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The historic movement of 21 February in Bangladesh, what was it for? It was for the Bengali language. There is no such thing as a 'Bangladeshi language'. Yet Amit Malviya posts that 'There is no language called Bengali that neatly covers all these variants.'" "Then let me ask: when two lines are written in Bengali on a teleprompter for the Prime Minister to recite, what language is that? Bengali or Bangladeshi? It is Bengali. Let's be clear: there is no language called Bangladeshi," he added. Trinamool, in a statement, said, "Denying the existence of a constitutionally recognised language is nothing short of linguistic apartheid. BJP is systematically promoting xenophobia and othering, with Bengalis being deliberately targeted across states. Such dangerous narratives must be condemned and resisted at every level."
