'Gossip Girl' actress Michelle Trachtenberg dead at 39
Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her role in "Gossip Girl," was found dead in a New York City luxury apartment building by the NYPD. She was 39.
Nearly two months after Michelle Trachtenberg's death at 39 years old, officials have issued a ruling on her cause of death.
On Wednesday, New York City's Office of Chief Medical Examiner released a statement announcing the cause and manner of the "Gossip Girl" actor's Feb. 26 death as complications of diabetes mellitus. The manner was determined to be natural.
The office previously said in February that the cause and manner were "undetermined."
Trachtenberg was found dead in a New York City luxury apartment building at 8 a.m. Feb. 26, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department previously confirmed to USA TODAY. Upon arriving at her unit, officers found a 39-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive; EMS officials responded to the scene and found the actress dead.

The New York City-born star started her career at 3 in television commercials and rose to fame as a child star. She later found success in television and movie roles throughout the aughts and beyond.
Trachtenberg was a 2000s TV mainstay with memorable roles in "Gossip Girl," "Harriet the Spy" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
What is diabetes mellitus?
There are several categories of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, gestational diabetes, Neonatal diabetes and maturity-onset diabetes of the young.
Diabetes mellitus, the full name for the disease characterized by inadequate control of glucose levels in a person's blood, affects around 38 million people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This equates to around one in 10 people, and approximately one in five people do not know they have the chronic illness.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that "occurs when some or all of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed," Harvard Medical School's website explains. In the absence of insulin, "sugar accumulates in the bloodstream rather than entering the cells" and causes "excessive urination and dehydration" and also causes tissue damage.
The CDC estimates that between 5-10% of people with diabetes are diagnosed with Type 1. People of all ages can receive a diagnosis, and there are no known prevention methods.
Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance, meaning cells resist "the normal effect of insulin, which is to drive glucose in the blood into the inside of the cells," per Harvard Health Publishing. This causes glucose to build up in the blood. Type 2 diabetes, which affects around 90-95% of diabetes patients, can also develop at any age.
Risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes include family history, having prediabetes or gestational diabetes, being over the age of 45 and being overweight or having obesity.

SummerStage, New York City's free concert series, is opening. Here's who you can see.
The SummerStage free concert series throughout New York City kicks off Wednesday night in Central Park. Marcus Miller, a Grammy award-winning jazz bassist, will be the headliner on opening night at 6 p.m. He will be joined by Tank and the Bangas and The Soul Rebels for a night of New Orleans jazz. Gates will open at 5 p.m. at Rumsey Playfield. The outdoor performing arts festival will be held all summer in Central Park and 13 other parks in all five boroughs. More than 70 shows are scheduled, featuring salsa, jazz, hip-hop, indie-rock, dance, opera, pop, and soul. "You can see the Roots in Queens, that's going to be really great. Big Freedia is going to be in Brooklyn. Lettuce, that's a jazzy, funky band, is going to be in Coney Island. We have Rakim, who's going to be performing on Staten Island. Taylor Swift and Blake Lively's friendship status revealed after Justin Baldoni drops subpoena amid ‘stressful' few weeks
Taylor Swift and Blake Lively are reportedly still not speaking despite Justin Baldoni dropping the pop superstar's subpoena amid his legal battle with his 'It Ends With Us' co-star. 'There's been radio silence between Taylor and Blake since the subpoena was dropped,' a source told Us Weekly Saturday. 'They won't pick up where they left off because of all the emotional residue.' Baldoni, 41, initially dragged Swift, 35, into his $400 defamation and extortion countersuit against Lively, 37, because he claimed the 'Gossip Girl' alum had leveraged her friendship with the famous singer to try and gain control of their 2024 film. He alleged in the complaint, obtained by Page Six, that Lively brought Swift and her husband, Ryan Reynolds — whom she affectionately referred to as her 'dragons' — to a meeting about script re-writes, making Baldoni feel 'pressured' to accept the changes his co-star wanted. 'The message could not have been clearer. Baldoni was not just dealing with Lively. He was also facing Lively's 'dragons,' two of the most influential and wealthy celebrities in the world, who were not afraid to make things very difficult for him,' the director's lawyer Bryan Freedman previously claimed. The countersuit was filed after Lively sued Baldoni for sexual harassment and other allegations. Swift was then officially subpoenaed earlier this month, prompting the 'Fortnight' singer's rep to adamantly deny their client was ever involved in any 'casting' or 'creative decisions' pertaining to the film. The legal drama immediately caused an even deeper rift between Swift and Lively, with a source telling People at the time the friendship 'has halted' and the 'Shake It Off' singer 'wants no part in this drama.'Baldoni's team then shockingly dropped Swift's subpoena just a few weeks later and an insider cryptically noted to Page Six at the time, 'When information is voluntarily received, there is no need for subpoenas.' Last week, a source claimed to the Daily Mail that the 'Lover' singer's dad, Scott Swift, had made a deal with Baldoni's lawyers and he 'voluntarily gave up' information in an effort to protect his daughter. Us Weekly's source added Saturday that Taylor is 'feeling an immense sense of relief' to be able to put the legal drama behind her, further noting, 'It's been a stressful few weeks for her and she seems happier and lighter since the subpoena was dropped.' The insider also recognized that the 'Blank Space' singer handled the entire situation with 'a lot of grace and is not solely focused on it,' concluding, 'She's moved on.' Taylor has much to celebrate lately, given that she recently bought back her masters. 'I've been bursting into tears of joy at random intervals ever since I found that this is really happening. I really get to say those words,' she wrote in part in a lengthy letter to her fans on her website Friday. Taylor was involved in a public feud with music manager Scooter Braun when he bought her masters for a reported $300 million dollars in 2019 — which she claimed he did without her permission. Then in 2020, Braun, 43, sold the recordings to Shamrock Capital, who just sold them back to the global superstar.
