Gossip Girl star's Netflix crime thriller and all fans say the same thing

The noughties icon stars in a Netflix original thriller that left many fans feeling disappointed
Leighton Meester, best known for her role as Blair Waldorf in the popular teen drama Gossip Girl, takes on a starkly different character in the mystery film The Weekend Away.
The Netflix original, adapted from Sarah Alderson's novel and released on the streaming service in 2022, promised much with its idyllic setting of Split, Croatia, and a beloved leading lady.

However, it appears to have missed the mark with audiences. A scathing critique on Rotten Tomatoes read: "Absolutely horrible!

"Poor acting, a simple and too predictable script... The only good moment in this movie is a bird's-eye view of that city in Croatia. Unforgettable waste of time."
Another review expressed disappointment, noting: "This movie had all the elements to tell a good story: a decent cast, an interesting location, and an attractive premise, but it turns out they decided to make everything jumbled and full of loose ends."
In the film, Leighton portrays Beth, a new mother who travels to Croatia for a brief holiday with her lifelong friend Kate, played by Christina Wolfe, reports the Mirror US.
Their trip includes a raucous night out clubbing, during which Kate encourages Beth to consider a one-night stand to alleviate her marital woes.
After their night of revelry, Beth awakens with a hazy recollection of the events, only to discover that Kate has mysteriously disappeared.

After a bit of sleuthing with the aid of their obliging taxi driver from the previous evening, Ziad Bakri's character Beth discovers that the two chaps they spent the night with were actually hired escorts and cunning con artists.
Beth's friend had engaged the duo for some light-hearted fun, unbeknownst to her of the gents' clandestine criminal past. The duplicitous pair masquerade as respectable businessmen to sedate and rob their unsuspecting female clientele.
The film's intriguing plot received praise from several viewers, with one fan commenting: "This is a great thriller with twists and turns that bring plenty of surprises. Leighton Meester shines, as does Croatia."

Another enthusiast remarked: "It's a fantastic, fast-paced suspense thriller. Must-watch movie.
"Lead roles-specifically Leighton Meester-are excellent." When it premiered, courtesy of its star actress, the movie piqued enough curiosity to amass almost 80 million hours of viewing.
However, consensus suggests that The Weekend Away might not entirely fulfil viewer expectations. A critique reads: "Decent acting from the main lady, but otherwise pretty average and not a particularly thrilling thriller."
Moreover, one audience member expressed that the movie suffered from "strange pacing," and characters who "lacked depth." Form your own opinion on whether this film meets the criteria of the thriller genre by watching The Weekend Away with Leighton Meester on Netflix today.

Biggest Loser contestant says they 'died that day' after extreme challenge on beach

Dramatic shows footage of how contestant's nearly ended in Netflix documentary A former contestant on The Biggest Loser says they 'died that day' after attempting an extreme challenge. ‌ A new docuseries on Netflix, streaming from today (August 15) called Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser takes an inside look at the making of the hit reality TV competition that ran for 18 seasons beginning in 2004 and finishing in 2016. Although there was an attempted revival back in 2020. ‌ The three-part series explores the good, the bad, and the complicated during the show's lifespan. It features interviews with former contestants, producers, health professionals and trainers like Bob Harper who were involved in making the show. ‌ It examines the show's approach to transformation, the support systems in place, and the unique challenges of filming reality television. Many of those involved reflect back on what it was like to make the show, what it meant for them at the time and how they view it all today. Tracey Yukich appears in the documentary to talk about her experiences as a contestant. Tracey featured in season eight and says it was life changing. However, that is not simply because she was just able to lose weight. During one particular extreme challenge set up by the show's producers, she says she had a near death experience. For the participant's first major mission that year, they were transported away from the ranch that they spent majority of their time in to a beach front location. Crews were filming them from helicopters as well as on the ground. A mile-long course had been set up along the beach to test each of the new contestants before they had even really started their new exercise regimes. Tracey struggled and collapsed. ‌ Footage is shown of the dramatic moment on the show, where there is serious concern by fellow contestants. The medical team rush onto the scene and they are heard several times exclaiming Tracey is unresponsive. Describing what happened for the documentary, Tracey says: "I'm running, and my legs feel really heavy. Like lead. What's happening right then is my body's starting to shut down. I might not make it. But I told myself 'I'm gonna do it' because I wanted to change my life." Tracey is then seen on the show, unable to walk and struggling to speak as she begins to crawl towards the finish line. Other contestants then come over to try and help her. However, as they do and cheer for her, she collapses. ‌ "I don't remember a lot," Tracey says, "I remember hearing the helicopter. I just felt like I was floating. And then my grandpa was there. And then I saw darkness. But then I saw light. So I knew, I knew I died that day." At the time of filming, it was believed Tracey suffered heat stroke. However, she has since explained it was rhabdomyolysis, a potentially life threatening muscle injury. ‌ "My organs were literally shutting down. I didn't realise that I had rhabdomyolysis. And rhabdomyolysis is your body's way of saying 'I'm going to shut down on you'. It started with my liver, then it was in my kidneys and then it goes to your heart. And that's where I almost died." Tracey says that she was unable to get out of bed to go to the bathroom herself and could still feel grit and sand in her fingernails. Doctors warned her that they may need to perform drastic surgery to aid her recovery. She also acknowledges that only the show's medical advisor Dr Robert Huizenga understood how sick she was. Dr Huizenga also tells the documentary that the show did not inform him of the challenge Tracey and the rest of the contestants were undertaking. Despite what happened, and still feeling physically weak afterwards, Tracey remained on the show. She lasted until week eight, when she was voted off.

"But it is the way we become a team that I love, and this was an exceptional cast. Truly, I couldn't believe my luck." She also expressed her love for Osman's novel, admitting she "whizzed down to the bookshop" the minute she got the role. "The first book is a constant, lovely reference. I was trying to find little snippets of exactly what Joyce got up to," she shared. "Richard Osman wrote Joyce keeping a diary through her first few days at Coopers Chase. ‌ "Every now and then in the book, I'd find marvellous little details about Joyce's love of particular television programmes - using her napkin at the lunch table because she thinks it makes her look clever - or putting the chairs out at a meeting because she thinks people will like her better." Director Chris Columbus spoke highly of Imrie, branding her "a British treasure". ‌ He shared: "In every film I've seen her in, Celia has managed to steal my heart (and most of the time steal the film). "For 'The Thursday Murder Club', Celia transformed herself into the character of Joyce. "Fans of the book who have seen our film have all said the same thing: 'That is exactly how I pictured Joyce!'" The Thursday Murder Club airs on Netflix on August 28

The endearing nickname Prince Philip gave Princess Anne, who turns 75 today, and how he supported her during a 'rocky patch' in her marriage

Today Princess Anne celebrates her 75th birthday - but one royal who sadly will not be able to attend is her beloved father Prince Philip. Anne and Philip were known to share a very close bond, with many friends of the family going as far as to claim the Princess Royal was the late Duke of Edinburgh 's favourite child. This close bond between the two royals was endearingly exemplified in season three of the hit Netflix series The Crown when an adorable nickname Philip had for Anne was revealed. In the scene, from the fourth episode of the season, Philip is seen sitting at his desk speaking into a tannoy asking for a member of the Royal Family. Philip, played by Tobias Menzies, can be heard calling out 'sweetie' into the intercom. One of Queen Elizabeth II's advisors assumes it is her he is trying to reach and so goes into her office to let her know. 'I'm not sweetie, I'm darling or cabbage. Someone else is sweetie,' Elizabeth replies. It is then revealed that it is in fact Anne that the doting father is trying to reach as Erin Doherty makes her debut in the show as the Princess Royal. 'Sweetie' was reportedly a real nickname that Prince Philip had for Anne and an unsurprising one considering their special father-daughter relationship. Mike Parker told the Daily Mail in 2017 that their close bond was because 'Anne is very much like Philip' while 'Charles is more like Elizabeth'. Indeed, the pair were remarkably similar, with both sharing a love of sport and being among the hardest-working members of the family. Anne is also known to have leaned on her father for support during the breakdown of her marriage to Mark Phillips. Writing in his biography of the late prince - titled Philip: The Final Portrait - broadcaster Gyles Brandreth said: 'When Princess Anne 's first marriage foundered, the Queen and Prince Philip were saddened, of course, but as the Duke put it to me, "What can you do? It isn't easy. She tried to make it work. She really did."' Anne then married her second husband, Tim Laurence, in 1992 but then went on to confide in her father about a 'rocky patch' the couple were enduring. Brandreth wrote: 'A few years later, when Anne had remarried, the Duke told me that she and her new husband were having a "Rocky patch - you're married, you know how it is?" "I do," I said. '"I don't know what to do to help," he said. He shook his head.' The surprisingly candid admissions came while Philip was attending a meal at the Cabinet War Rooms. 'He made no attempt to hide his distress and concern. It clearly weighed on him quite heavily. It must have done because this conversation was taking place in public: at a charity fundraising lunch in the Cabinet War Rooms,' Brandreth recalled. 'We had only just taken our places: food was being served. I was seated one place away from the Duke. He turned to the middle-aged woman who was seated between us. '"As a rule, I try to keep out of these things," he explained,' Brandreth continued. '"But you want to help," said the woman, who had married children of her own. '"Yes," said the Duke, contemplating his starters, "but I don't know what to say except, keep it going, it will work out. With good will on both side, it usually does." 'He sighed: "Children."' Following Philip's death in April 2021, the Princess Royal paid tribute to her father describing him as her 'teacher, supporter and critic '. Anne and Philip together in 1980. Upon his death, the Princess Royal paid tribute to her father describing him as her 'teacher, supporter and critic' The statement read: 'You know it's going to happen but you are never really ready. 'My father has been my teacher, my supporter and my critic, but mostly it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate. 'His ability to treat every person as an individual in their own right with their own skills comes through all the organisations with which he was involved. 'I regard it as an honour and a privilege to have been asked to follow in his footsteps and it has been a pleasure to have kept him in touch with their activities. 'I know how much he meant to them, in the UK, across the Commonwealth and in the wider world. 'I would like to emphasise how much the family appreciate the messages and memories of so many people whose lives he also touched. We will miss him but he leaves a legacy which can inspire us all.' The notoriously private Anne is known for her rather unconventional approach to royal life, having decided when her children were born they would not receive titles. That attitude also extends into other aspects of Anne's life. On the Royals with Roya and Kate podcast, expert Roya Nikkhah revealed Anne follows a strict policy when it comes to birthday celebrations. Roya claims that the Princess Royal has a 'no-frills' approach to her birthdays which means she only celebrates major milestones. 'Anne's policy is: "I will do things for my birthdays that have a zero, but I won't do things for my birthdays that have a five,"' Roya said. She added Anne has reportedly cancelled meetings in the run up to the big day to avoid discussions about how she might mark her 75th. So for Anne's next big birthday celebration, partygoers will have to wait till her 80th.
