Backyard Baseball 2001 Game Returns With 28 Original MLB Stars
The Backyard Sports series has been revived under the Playground Productions label after extensive efforts to track down the rights to the groundbreaking PC titles and redevelop the original code. The newest game—available July 8—also required locating the pros who initially appeared in the game.

Some were easy to connect with. Others were harder to find. Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett said the team reached former Marlin Álex González through players he's currently coaching, for instance.
'2001 is already some time ago, and some of these players don't live in the U.S. Some of them don't have managers or agents or social media,' she said. 'So we got creative.'
In general, Barnett said, players were eager to lend their IP rights once again. In some cases, they leapt at the opportunity to show their kids, or grandkids, how big of a star they once were.
Three players ultimately declined to participate this time around: Ken Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas and Barry Bonds. Bonds—notably—has not appeared in MLB video games since opting out of the MLB Players Association licensing agreement in 2003.

Playground Productions also got buy-in from MLB, allowing for renewed rivalries such as Melonheads vs. Marlins.
'It just could not have been easier [working with MLB],' Barnett said. 'They really love this brand.' She added that the league recognizes how valuable the original releases were to the sport's efforts to grow.
'There were actually kids who learned about baseball through a very simple point-and-click game,' Barnett said. 'Now that we get to bring it back, we can start to capture even more kids who can become baseball fans for life.'
Recently released versions, including Backyard Baseball '97 and Backyard Soccer '98, have found success on gaming platform Steam and iOS, largely by entertaining nostalgic millennials, including those hoping to share their childhood favorites with a new generation. Backyard Baseball '97 also recently came to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. Mega Cat Studios has been responsible for game development.

Playground Productions is also creating an entirely new entry in the series. Though the group has not announced which sport it will feature first, Barnett said the company intends to continue the crossovers between original characters and real-life stars—that is, assuming she can get players on board.

Jeff Bagwell

Dodgers All-Star candidate Max Muncy out 6 weeks with knee bone bruise after ugly collision vs. White Sox
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Max Muncy on the 10-day IL with a left knee bone bruise on Thursday, an injury he sustained in the same at-bat as Clayton Kershaw's 3,000th career strikeout. He later told reporters he expects to be out around six weeks. Muncy described his prognosis as a "best-case scenario," with no structural damage shown on his MRI: "It was tough news, but it was also great news. When you look at the play and the injury that could have happened, we possibly got the best case scenario. There's no structural damage in there which is huge ... The timetable still kinda sucks for me." With Kershaw one strikeout away from the exclusive club club, Chicago White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor was caught stealing and slid directly into Muncy's lower left leg. The impact left the 34-year-old writhing on the ground and holding his knee. Advertisement Muncy was eventually helped off the field by a trainer, with a pronounced limp. Dodgers broadcaster Orel Hershiser later told viewers that Sportsnet LA would not show replay of the injury because of how ugly it was, reporting that Muncy's knee appeared to bend backward. The Dodgers later announced that Muncy left the game due to left knee pain. Kershaw reached 3,000 strikeouts later in the at-bat, becoming the 20th MLB player to join the exclusive club. Muncy's injury took the air out of the Dodger Stadium crowd, but it still gave the southpaw a lengthy standing ovation between innings. Taylor left the game as well after a partial inning in the field, with the White Sox calling his injury a left trap contusion. The Dodgers won the game 5-4, walking off the White Sox with a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. Advertisement Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was optimistic about Muncy's outlook after the game, and it now appears he has avoided ligament damage, even though he is now out until at least mid-August. A serious injury for Muncy would have been a significant blow for the Dodgers, who have been working seemingly all season to not even get healthy, but perhaps more like 90%. Muncy has been good enough that he reached reach Phase 2 of the voting for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game before losing out on the NL third-base spot to San Diego Padres star Manny Machado. Despite not making it as a starter, Muncy has a solid case to make the game as a reserve. Advertisement Muncy turned a dreadful start to the season around after a trip to the eye doctor led to him adopting glasses at the plate. The results were like night and day: .194/.309/.301 and one homer in 29 games before the glasses, .286/.414/.553 and 12 home runs in 51 games after the glasses entering Wednesday. He just finished a month of June in which he ranked second in the majors in OPS at 1.113, behind only Juan Soto. With Muncy out, the Dodgers are looking at some combination of Kiké Hernández and Miguel Rojas at the hot corner, with top-100 prospect Alex Freeland still waiting in the wings at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers' Max Muncy expects to miss 6 weeks with bone bruise
Max Muncy spent months tuning out and defusing unfounded speculation about his standing and the Los Angeles Dodgers' position at third base. He quelled that chatter with his bat, surging as one of the best hitters in the sport in May after trying on glasses, staking his claim to be an All-Star for the third time in his career. Now, after a collision with a sliding Michael A. Taylor twisted his left knee on Wednesday night, all of that remains up in the air once again. Advertisement The Dodgers placed Muncy on the injured list on Thursday afternoon after the 34-year-old third baseman spent the morning in an MRI tube. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters at Dodger Stadium on Thursday that those tests revealed a bone bruise, knocking Muncy out for an estimated six weeks. 'It was tough news, but it was also great news,' Muncy told reporters. 'When you look at the play and what could have happened, we got possibly the best-case scenario.' The organization recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz to take Muncy's spot on the active roster, a part-time solution as the Dodgers will have to spend the next month before the July 31 trade deadline finalizing how they will handle the position in Muncy's stead. Max Muncy said he's looking at about six weeks out with the injury, which is about best case scenario considering how it looked at the time. — Rowan Kavner (@RowanKavner) July 3, 2025 Kiké Hernández is the likely internal option, filling the same kind of role he did last summer when Muncy missed several months with a strained oblique and displaced rib. Hernández has a .652 OPS on the season and is largely on the roster for his versatility; keeping him to one position could open up some playing opportunities for Korean rookie Hyeseong Kim at second base and center field, and could lead to Miguel Rojas expanding his duties from his current part-time role. The Dodgers also have top infield prospect Alex Freeland, who has an .836 OPS in 360 plate appearances this season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, with 10 of his 75 starts coming at third base. Freeland was recently dealing with a thumb issue and isn't on the 40-man roster, which could be the reason why Los Angeles opted to bring up Ruiz instead in the short term. The organization is already expecting somewhat of a roster crunch in the coming weeks along with the deadline, with Tyler Glasnow on a rehab assignment and Blake Snell and Blake Treinen now both back to facing hitters. Los Angeles also added another infielder to their 40-man roster on Thursday, claiming CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees. The Dodgers claimed IF CJ Alexander from the New York Yankees and designated OF Steward Berroa for assignment. — Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) July 3, 2025 If he were to miss more time, Muncy's absence could also fuel speculation once again that the Dodgers could seek to add a third baseman at the deadline. Nolan Arenado's desire to play in Los Angeles is well-known throughout the industry, though the Dodgers never engaged in serious trade talks for the eight-time All-Star. The 34-year-old's offensive decline has continued, with his OPS+ dropping from 151 in his top-three MVP finish in 2022 to 108 in 2023, 101 in 2022, and below league average at a 95 OPS+ in 333 plate appearances this season. Advertisement Taking on that kind of salary for Arenado through 2026 — rather than Muncy's much more palatable $10 million club option for next season — is among the several considerations that could shift dramatically should Muncy's absence be shorter than originally anticipated. Given how gruesome the injury initially looked, that would be seen as a win for the Dodgers. Two other third basemen who could be available at the deadline — Arizona's Eugenio Suárez and Colorado's Ryan McMahon — both share a division with the Dodgers, potentially souring any chance of a deal. The Dodgers originally acquired Ruiz in April, hoping to tap into the unique skill set that the 2023 American League stolen base leader possesses. Ruiz has continued to put up strong exit velocities in the Dodgers' system, and paired that with results down in the minor leagues. Through 300 plate appearances with Oklahoma City, he has hit .292 with an .852 OPS to go with eight home runs and 38 stolen bases.
