Teachers, schools won't be penalised for poor results, says Karnataka Minister

The Hindua day ago
Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa on Monday promised to take back an order that penalises teachers and aided school management over low grades attained by students in SSLC.
BJP member S.V. Sankanur pointed out that teachers and management of aided schools were being punished for low grades. He said that the teachers lose an increment if the pass percentage is less than 60%, and if results are less than 50% for five consecutive years, the aid would be cut by 50%.
'Do parents and the government have no responsibility for the results? How was the benchmark fixed? In the last 10 years, the government has not allowed the filling of vacancies in teaching posts in aided institutions.'
According to the Minister, the rules were brought in 2019. 'I do not know why this rule was brought in. After a discussion on the issue, I have asked the officials to withdraw it. The rules should not affect teachers. We should concentrate on teachers' recruitment.'
He further said that the recruitment of teachers has been cleared for vacancies till 2020, and steps are being taken to fill vacancies between 2020 and 2025. A meeting of elected representatives has been convened on Wednesday to discuss these issues.

Fatehpur incident: AAP seeks probe by ex-HC judge

Lucknow: The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that the Fatehpur incident be investigated by an inquiry committee under a former high court judge. Calling for strict action against those guilty and also officials who allowed this to take place, AAP accused BJP of spreading fanaticism and religious hatred. AAP's Imran Latif described the incident as an example of UP's deteriorating law and order. "BJP's Fatehpur district president announced on Aug 11 that Hindu organisations would perform rituals at the tomb, but administration and police did not intervene. For over half an hour, chaos prevailed at the site in presence of police force, and officials remained silent spectators. It shows the incident occurred under govt protection," he said. tnn AAP's outgoing state general secretary Dinesh Patel said that BJP has used such tactics to divert attention from serious issues like SIR, school closures, and mergers by spreading religious frenzy from time to time. He claimed that the local intelligence units had prior information about the incident, yet the administration did not prevent it. In anticipation of roll revision, Congress begins training of booth-level agents in Assam

With Assam administration indicating that the State will soon be holding Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, State Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi said that the party has begun the process of recruiting and training its Booth Level Agents (BLAs). The SIR is currently underway in Bihar and the Election Commission (EC) has indicated that it will be held across the country. 'So far we have registered close to 28,880 BLAs. We have also started a training programme for these agents. On Sunday, we concluded one round of training. At the end of the month, we will hold a week-long training programme. In the first module, we are briefing them on how voter list manipulation has been undertaken in Maharashtra and in Karnataka. We will show them the evidence that Rahul Gandhi's team had provided,' Mr. Gogoi told The Hindu. The party is also prepping up its legal team to support the BLAs to file objections and claims. The SIR exercise in Assam, Mr. Gogoi said, will be particularly difficult because of the demographic complexities, which he accused the BJP government of further complicating. 'NRC in limbo' 'The NRC (National Register of Citizens) remains in a limbo in Assam. The BJP government is not willing to address the issue of foreigners since they have no solutions to offer. Instead with the Citizenship Amendment Act, they have issued guidelines by which several Bengali speaking people have to give a written affidavit that they are from Bangladesh to apply under the Act,' he said. Instead of identifying illegal Bangladeshis as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had claimed, Mr. Gogoi pointed out that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, today says that he is unable to address the issue. 'Instead of making Assam safe and secure, he is absolving himself of responsibility and wants to distribute guns to the people,' he said.
