MS Dhoni's fitness has been a major talking point in the 2025 Indian Premier League , in which Chennai Super Kings concluded their campaign on Sunday by finishing at the bottom of the table for the first time ever.
The legendary Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter finished the season with 196 runs in 14 appearances at a strike rate of 135.17. The point of concern for experts as well as fans this season, however, was the fact that Dhoni was facing only a handful of deliveries at the crease, presumably due to his limited mobility between the wickets since undergoing a knee surgery in 2023.

Dhoni had even sent Ravichandran Ashwin to bat ahead of him with the team in a dire situation during their chase of a 197-run target set by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk in the last week of March. 'Thala' eventually walked out to bat at No 9 , at which point the target already was beyond the five-time champions' reach.
Raina, Chopra engage in heated argument over Dhoni's fitness
It is therefore, understandable for experts and fans to have their concerns regarding Dhoni's future in the world's biggest T20 league, which prides itself not only for being the richest T20 league but for also having some of the best players in the world, which translates to the highest quality of cricketing action compared to other leagues.
Suresh Raina, Dhoni's former India and CSK teammate, however, isn't a fan of such discussions and continues to defend 'Captain Cool' despite his poor run as batter as well as captain this season.
Raina and former India pacer RP Singh were panellists on The Big Debate on Star Sports who were in favour of Dhoni continuing to operate the way he did in the 18th IPL season, while ex-India opener Aakash Chopra and former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar were on the other side of the debate, questioning whether 'MSD' should continue going ahead.

'If MS Dhoni wasn't an uncapped Indian, would he have been a part of the CSK team this year?' asked Chopra during the debate, to which Raina replied, 'Absolutely, he has been with the team for 18 years. Even now, he hits the most sixes.'
Chopra, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the first two IPL seasons in 2008 and 2009, followed up to Raina's response by pointing his finger at Dhoni batting between Nos 7 to 9 and questioning why a player of his stature shouldn't be batting higher up the order.
'He feels he is more comfortable in the final four overs. He is fit, keeping wickets at the age of 44. He did an interview in the middle, saying a team for the World Cup (T20) is being made, hence he wants to give others like Shivam Dube more chances,' Raina said in response, referring to last year's T20 World Cup that took place right after the IPL.

'After a knee surgery, he is bound to take time. Every player does. He has been keeping for 20 years, manages himself. Raina also had a knee operation done. He managed himself for some time and eventually recovered,' Singh added.

Dhoni, meanwhile, remained tight-lipped on his future as a cricketer when the question inevitably came up during the post-match presentation ceremony in CSK's final game of the season, against Gujarat Titans in the afternoon clash of the Sunday double-header in Ahmedabad.

'I have four-five months to decide, there's no hurry. Need to keep the body fit. You have to be at your best. If cricketers start retiring for their performance, some of them will retire at 22.
'Will go back to Ranchi, enjoy a few bike rides. I am not saying I am done, not saying I am coming back either. I have the luxury of timing. Will think about it and then decide,' Dhoni said after guiding his team to an 83-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium .

Ricky Ponting supports Jasprit Bumrah exclusion, calls BCCI's decision ‘spot on': 'I think the timing is right...'
The BCCI selection committee's decision to name Shubman Gill as the captain ahead of the experienced Jasprit Bumrah, who even led India in two Tests during the recent Australia tour, did not sit well with many experts. However, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting jumped to the defence of the BCCI, saying that the decision was absolutely spot on and that the timing to bring in Gill couldn't have been better. The Test captaincy was Bumrah's for the taking, having led India thrice before, including twice in Australia in the last season, where India won in Perth in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, a back injury in the Sydney Test, which later saw him miss the Champions Trophy, left the selectors concerned and subsequently dented his chances of taking over the reins in Test cricket. Speaking on the ICC Review, Ponting said BCCI was right in naming Gill as the captain because he felt India shouldn't have a captain who could be missing matches repeatedly due to injuries. He also urged the selectors to give Gill a lengthy rope as a captain. "I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple," Ponting said. "Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there. So I think it's the right decision. Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for a long period of time." Having seen Gill from close quarters in IPL, where the youngster has been leading the Gujarat Titans squad since 2024, Ponting felt the timing to name him the Test captain couldn't have been better. "Even just looking back at the way he's handled this current GT team through this IPL, I think leadership sits really well with him," Ponting said. "And the important thing for me with leadership as well is if you're a batter and you're a captain, you have to be scoring runs. And Shubman is doing that in IPL and I think the timing is right. I think you'll have a good captain who'll make a lot of Test runs going forward."

Anshul Kamboj shines as India A set England Lions back on Day Two of unofficial Test
Anshul Kamboj (Screengrab) England Lions reached 58 for one at lunch, trailing by 290 runs after India A was dismissed for 348 on the second day of the unofficial Test match on Saturday. Tom Haines (28 not out) and Emilio Gay (3 not out) were at the crease when lunch was called. The initial breakthrough came from Anshul Kamboj, who dismissed Ben McKinney (12) with an outswinger, caught by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. This dismissal came shortly after McKinney was given a reprieve at point in the eighth over. Despite consistent pressure from India A bowlers, the Lions managed to score freely. Gay faced challenging spells from the Indian bowlers, although batting conditions were more favourable compared to the first day's overcast weather and grassy pitch. India A, starting the day at 319 for seven, added only 29 runs to their overnight score. Tanush Kotian scored 15 from 37 deliveries with two boundaries, whilst Kamboj contributed just two runs. Joshua Tongue found success by removing both overnight batsmen - bowling Kotian and trapping Kamboj lbw. He also contributed to Tushar Deshpande's (11) run-out dismissal. Khaleel Ahmed remained unbeaten on seven. Brief scores: India A: 348 all out in 89.3 overs ( KL Rahul 116, Karun Nair 40, Dhruv Jurel 52, Nitish Kumar Reddy 34; Chris Woakes 3/60, George Hill 2/56) England Lions: 58 for 1 in 16 overs (Tom Haines batting 28; Anshul Kamboj 1/13).
