China's April bank lending seen plunging from a month ago
BEIJING, May 9 (Reuters) - China's April new yuan loans probably shrank significantly from March levels as the trade war with the United States further weighed on the market at a traditionally quiet time of the year, according to a Reuters poll on Friday.
Chinese banks are estimated to have issued 700 billion yuan ($96.58 billion) in net new yuan loans last month, less than one fifth of the 3.64 trillion yuan distributed in March, according to the median estimates of 17 economists.
Analysts at Citi Research said new credit could be soft for April, calling it a typically "low season" for loan demand. Although, M1 and M2 supply could improve, they said.
"Growth of monetary base and outstanding credit is set to jump in April with the low base from financial tightening last April kicking in," Citi said.
The data is due to be released from May 10 to 15.
Credit demand has fluctuated in the past few months, as borrowers' confidence tracks pledges made by Chinese policymakers to bolster an economy grappling with a prolonged property crisis, high local government debt and deflationary pressures.
A tit-for-tat tariff dispute with the United States that escalated last month, on top of already cautious household and business spending, curbed the appetite for credit.
China's manufacturing activity contracted at the fastest pace in 16 months in April, after the U.S. tariffs snapped two months of recovery.
Still, China kept a growth target of around 5% this year, having promised more initiatives to support consumption.
Beijing stepped up efforts to cushion the economic damage caused by the trade war with the U.S. this week, announcing a raft of stimulus measures, including interest rate cuts and a major liquidity injection.
The announcements come ahead of a meeting between top U.S. and Chinese economic officials in Switzerland this weekend, seen as an opportunity to begin resolving duties on goods imports between the world's two largest economies that have soared well above 100%.
Broad M2 money supply last month is expected to have grown 7.3%, up from the 7.0% in March.
Outstanding yuan loans probably rose 7.4% in April from a year earlier, the poll showed, matching the 7.4% pace in March.
Total Social Financing (TSF), a broad measure of credit and liquidity, likely grew to 1.22 trillion yuan in April from 5.89 trillion yuan in March, the poll showed. Any acceleration in government bond issuance could help boost growth in TSF.
The measure includes off-balance-sheet forms of financing that exist outside the conventional bank lending system, such as initial public offerings, loans from trust companies and bond sales.

US ocean container imports tumble in May as China tariffs take hold
LOS ANGELES, June 9 (Reuters) - U.S. seaborne imports of goods from China dropped 28.5% year-over-year in May, the sharpest decline since the pandemic, as President Donald Trump's 145% tariffs took hold, supply chain technology provider Descartes ( opens new tab said on Monday. China is the top U.S. supplier of goods that enter through seaports, including the nation's busiest in Los Angeles/Long Beach. Domestic businesses ranging from retailer Walmart (WMT.N), opens new tab to automaker Ford (F.N), opens new tab depend on those goods to operate. Ports on the U.S. West Coast handle the greatest share of trade with China and experienced significant volume declines in May with Los Angeles, Long Beach and Tacoma, Washington, down 18.4%, 22.4% and 25.6%, respectively, Descartes data showed. Overall U.S. seaborne imports in May tumbled 7.2% from the year earlier to 2.18 million 20-foot equivalent units - snapping a streak of near-record increases fueled by companies frontloading goods to avoid higher duties. The United States and China agreed to a 90-day pause on punitive tit-for-tat tariffs last month. U.S. and Chinese officials met in London on Monday to defuse the high-stakes trade dispute between the world's largest economies. Port executives and shipping consultants expect volume from China to rebound during the tariff truce, albeit at a more moderate level.

Popular fitness equipment recalled by Costco after more than 100 injuries reported
Nearly four million dumbbells have been recalled after more than 300 complaints were filed against the product, including over 100 claims of injuries. Users said they suffered 'concussions, abrasions, broken toes and contusions' from using the equipment, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected products - BowFlex 552, 52.5 LB Adjustable Dumbbells and BowFlex 1090, 90 LB Adjustable Dumbbells - are sold in Costco for over $800 along with a fitness stand and bench. There are an estimated 3,844,200 units, which are manufactured in China, in circulation. Johnson Health Tech Trading said it had received multiple reports of the dumbbells 'dislodging during use'. The model 552 dumbbells adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds while the model 1090 adjusts from 10 to 90 pounds. The model and serial number are printed on a sticker located on the bottom of the molded plastic tray. The company said that customers who own the dumbbells should stop using them immediately and should seek a refund or a voucher. The equipment is also sold at Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods and online through Amazon. Johnson Health Tech Trading added that it is contacting all known purchasers directly. However, some gym-loving customers were infuriated by the recall. One X user wrote: 'You want me to send you the bases and handles for my 1090s, and I have to dispose of 180 pounds of plates on my own. Then you will send me a coupon for $20 off the $799 weights I just rendered useless? That sounds like a plan made by someone who attended Yale or Harvard.' Another added: 'Your recall is a joke. Forcing consumers to choose between losing significant amounts of money or their safety is patently unfair.' Customers can see whether their dumbbells are included in the selection being recalled on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website. 'BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024,' the CPSC statement reported by Fox Business said. 'Johnson Health Tech Trading has agreed to provide a remedy for the 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells sold by BowFlex Inc., (formerly Nautilus Inc.), prior to May 2024 as a part of this recall. 'For units sold by BowFlex Inc. (formerly Nautilus Inc.), consumers can request a refund in the form of a prorated voucher and a one-year JRNY digital fitness membership.'
