By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Firefighters putting out the fire. SEMPORNA: A fire destroyed three two-storey shoplots in town, Tuesday. A spokesperson from the State Fire and Rescue Department said they received a distress call following the incident at 3.03am via MERS999. A team of nine firefighters was dispatched to the scene in a fire engine and EMRS vehicle. 'The fire involved the first floor of a two-storey shoplot, measuring 45X30 feet. 'The firefighters were using three water streams with three sprouts to combat the blaze,' said the spokesperson. No casualties were reported. RANAU: The 10th anniversary of the Mount Kinabalu earthquake that claimed 18 lives in 2015 was commemorated at Kinabalu Park on Thursday, marking a day of remembrance and reflection for those affected by the tragedy. Sabah Parks Trustees Board Chairman Peter Lintar said while the pain remains, the event spurred significant reforms in mountain safety and disaster response throughout the decade. He paid tribute to the victims - climbers, mountain guides and young adventurers - and acknowledged the enduring grief of their families while commending their strength and resilience. Peter also expressed deep appreciation to mountain guides, porters, rescuers, volunteers and locals whose sacrifices inspired long-term safety improvements, including the formation of Mosar and enhanced rescue protocols. Man charged over bomb threat made on plane leaving Singapore
Azim Shah Abubakar Shah was handed one charge of communicating false information on a harmful thing. - ST SINGAPORE: A man who allegedly made a bomb threat while on a plane that was departing Singapore for Abu Dhabi was charged on Thursday (June 5). Azim Shah Abubakar Shah, 22, was handed one charge of communicating false information on a harmful thing. According to court documents, the Singaporean was on board an Etihad Airways plane on Feb 14 when he allegedly posted the threat on his Instagram account under the username 'fruitloops_19'. He was said to have written 'no one knows that I'm gonna blow the plane up' in the post, which was viewed by 16 people. The police said they were alerted to the bomb hoax at 7.20pm. Officers from the Airport Police Division identified Azim within an hour of the post and confirmed that he was on board a flight bound for Abu Dhabi. The plane, which was already taxiing on the runway and about to take off, was recalled to Changi Airport Terminal 2, and Azim was arrested. It was discovered that he did not have any means to carry out his threat, as no threat items were found in his possession, the police said. If convicted, he may be jailed for up to seven years, fined up to $50,000, or both. - The Straits Times/ANN

Eight from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu claim trial to injuring fellow student

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Eight students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Terengganu magistrates' court today to severely injuring a fellow student last year. Berita Harian reported that the students, aged 21 to 23, made their pleas after the charges against them were read before magistrate Iffah Nabihah Ishak. They were charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the 21-year-old victim in a dormitory on the UMT campus between 1.30am and 5am on Dec 15, 2024. The charges were made under Section 325 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, which provide for up to seven years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. The court set July 6 for re-mention of the case and allowed bail of RM5,000 for all eight accused. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Azizan Abdullah, Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim, and Nur Aisyah Mohamad, while the accused were represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation. In December, police arrested 12 UMT students in connection with an assault on a fellow student. Acting Kuala Terengganu police chief Wan Zaki Wan Ismail said the arrests followed a report from a man claiming that his 20-year-old son had been assaulted in the university's dormitory. 'The victim informed his father of the assault by phone at 10.50pm on Dec 15 while the complainant was at home in Melaka. 'The victim also sent several photos showing injuries to various parts of his body,' he said.
