Engines tailored for narrow lanes, ladders for high-rise rescues, fire-fighting robots: Delhi CM plans to modernise fire safety infra
During her visit to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) headquarters at Connaught Place on Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a sweeping modernisation plan aimed at upgrading the city's fire safety infrastructure.
The government, in its March Budget, had allocated Rs 504 crore to the DFS. Of this, Rs 110 crore will be used to procure state-of-the-art equipment, including 100 compact fire engines tailored for Delhi 's narrow lanes, Gupta said.
'These mini fire trucks will be crucial in reaching narrow lanes and densely populated areas quickly,' said Home Minister Ashish Sood, who accompanied Gupta. Narrow lanes have been one of the biggest challenges for the DFS to reach accident spots on time.
The Budget includes plans to deploy advanced fire-fighting tools such as Aerial Water Tower (AWT) vehicles, 32-m turntable ladders for high-rise rescues, mini firefighting robots capable of operating in temperatures up to 500°C, and 24 new quick response vehicles (QRVs). These facilities are aimed at boosting emergency response capabilities while ensuring the safety of firefighters.
The plan will also include the integration of a computer-aided dispatch system into the DFS control room, which will enable real-time tracking of all fire trucks. Further, surveillance cameras will be installed in each fire vehicle, and control room personnel will receive technical training to handle upgraded systems efficiently.
Acknowledging the deteriorating state of the DFS headquarters, Gupta announced the construction of a new, modern facility, for which a budget has already been approved.
She outlined a roadmap, including short-term initiatives such as staff recruitment and holding public awareness campaigns, and long-term plans like the development of a GIS-based centralised management portal and international collaborations to train firefighters.
Highlighting the scale and workload of DFS, Gupta said, 'Today, DFS has 86 fire stations and over 3,000 dedicated firefighters who face more than 36,000 emergency situations annually. This number is the highest compared to any other metropolitan city in the country… We will expand the number of fire stations and establish 100 new fire posts, especially in narrow lanes…'
She added that the number of firefighters will be increased to effectively respond to emergencies. 'It is our commitment that there will be no shortage of equipment for DSF,' Gupta said.

Addressing a press conference at his Raipur residence on Sunday, the former MLA, Amit Jogi, alleged that the statue of Ajit Jogi, which stood on private land owned by the Jogi family, was uprooted using a hydra machine in the intervening night of 25 and 26 May, and dumped in garbage. He claimed the act was carried out in collusion with local officials and said the culprits were later seen having tea with the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district in-charge minister at a guest house, instead of being arrested. 'It has been over two weeks, yet the statue hasn't been reinstated, nor have the accused been apprehended. Everyone sees them, except the police,' Jogi said, calling the incident a 'deliberate insult' to Ajit Jogi and his legacy. He clarified that the statue was legally installed on land privately owned by the Jogi family and not on government property. The land, he said, was part of a property acquired before 1932 by the late Menzies and later transferred through a valid Power of Attorney to Atul Arthur in 2020. In 2021, a No Objection Certificate was issued by the landowners for the installation of a garden and Ajit Jogi's statue. Funds for the statue's platform and garden, amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh, were sanctioned from former MLA Dr Renu Jogi's MLA fund, with Gaurela Municipality appointed as the construction agency. Amit Jogi rejected claims that the statue was removed to install one of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying the municipal resolution pertained to Tikar Bypass, not Jyotipur Chowk. He further accused BJP leaders of engaging in 'statue politics' and urged them to act ethically. 'Ajit Jogi belongs to every Chhattisgarhi. Uprooting his statue is not only illegal and insensitive, but it also reflects a narrow, destructive mindset,' he said. Jogi announced that if the statue is not reinstated at its original spot by 25 June, it would be brought to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's residence in Raipur, demanding its formal unveiling. 'The CM once promised to visit Gaurela for the unveiling. Since he didn't, we'll bring Jogi Ji to his doorstep,' he added. He concluded by forgiving those involved in the act and said copies of a book authored by Ajit Jogi would be sent to them, urging them to 'read Jogi Ji and understand him.' Dr Renu Jogi also condemned the act and appealed for swift justice and reinstallation of the statue.

Markfed starts black burley tobacco procurement at Parchur
Parchur: The State government has instilled confidence among black burley tobacco farmers by launching tobacco procurement operations through Markfed on Saturday and announcing its commitment to purchase crops until the end of the season. Private companies had been reluctant to participate in procurement, leaving farmers without proper pricing and facing severe hardships. Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao highlighted these challenges to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Achennaidu, Agriculture Principal Secretary Rajasekhar, and Commissioner Dhilli Rao. State officials personally assessed the ground-level problems faced by the farmers in a meeting held at the camp office of Yeluri. Following review meetings with various companies that showed no progress, the government escalated the matter, leading to a crucial Cabinet decision for direct government procurement through Markfed. DM of Markfed Karunasri inaugurated the first tobacco procurement center at Parchur AMC Yard, realising the persistent efforts of Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao, who repeatedly brought farmers' difficulties to the government's attention. The ceremonious sale of operations saw the purchase of 6.40 quintals from farmer Dasi Kiran of Nagulapalem village at Rs 12000 per quintal. The Markfed DM announced plans to establish procurement centers everywhere and purchase from every farmer until the season ends. She said that arrangements are being made intensively to facilitate doorstep procurement. She said that the government is arranging tobacco company experts, procurement equipment, storage warehouses, and additional staff. The timing was considered auspicious for the Saturday launch, as suitable dates were not available on the initially planned June 14-15, she explained.

CPM protests demolition of Satavahana College
Vijayawada: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday spearheaded a protest and dharna programme here, condemning the demolition of Satavahana College. Women, students, and youth actively participated in thedemonstration, raising slogans to protect Satavahana College and its valuable land. The protest stemmed from the late-night demolition of the college building by bulldozers. When CPM leaders attempted to inspect the site, they were reportedly obstructed by police, who denied them entry, citing lack of permission. Protesters escalated their actions by climbing the gates and tearing down banners erected by private individuals, creating a tense atmosphere. Addressing the gathering, CPM State secretariat member Ch Baburao and State committee member Donepudi Kasinadh criticised the demolition. 'We have never witnessed such an incident in Vijayawada's history, where college buildings are brought down by bulldozers in the dead of night, right in the heart of the state capital, surrounded by ministerial offices and the Chief Minister's residence,' stated Baburao. He further alleged that the government has turned a blind eye while encroachers, with apparent government backing, have illegally seized the nearly 55-year-old Satavahana College which has the assets worth Rs 200 crore. 'Initially, former TDP MLC Alapati Rajendra Prasad was accused, and the government machinery remained passive. Now, another party has demolished the college in the dead of night,' he said. Baburao raised concerns about the future of students and faculty. The CPM leaders reiterated that the land is under Urban Land Ceiling, meaning it does not belong to private owners. Therefore, the CPM demanded the government to immediately take possession of the college run it as a government college. The CPM leaders accused all involved parties of colluding to plunder the college and its land. CPM State committee member K Sridevi, city secretaries B Ramana Rao and Boya Satyababu, P Krishna, and city leaders T Praveen, Vishnu, Korada Ramana, Chandrashekar, Suribabu, Peeru, Jhansi, Nageswara Rao, Asha, and others participated.
