MIRI (May 19): There was great fanfare at Miri Stadium yesterday upon the conclusion of the Hornbill 7s Rugby Tournament 2025, which showcased top young rugby talents from schools across Miri and beyond.
The competition, which introduced age categories younger than those in previous editions, centered on developing future talents with officials and coaches also eyeing prospects for next year's Sukma (Malaysia Games).
Miri Division Rugby Association (MDRA) advisor Landale Cranfield was quick to stress the tournament's role in talent scouting and long-term athlete development.
'We have seen potential talent from the Under-12s right through to the older age groups. By teaching fundamentals to these youngsters now, we could develop elite athletes over the next decade who can represent Sarawak and Malaysia at international levels,' he said.
He also highlighted the growing support for women's rugby, noting the rapid development since 2012.
Miri city councillor Victor Lau, who represented Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin at the closing ceremony, underscored the government's commitment to sports development as part of its social and political agenda.
'We hope for more support from the teachers,' he said while emphasising the role of parents, teachers and the wider community to build a healthy and inclusive sporting culture.
Cranfield acknowledged the contributions of government agencies in promoting the sport but expressed the hope for more funding on development to widen the talent pool and ensure a steady pipeline of future rugby players.

Sports minister says Sukma 2026 to feature e-sports, chess, cricket, and kabaddi

SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — The 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will feature the new sports of e-sports, chess, cricket and kabaddi, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said. She shared that the four sports were approved at the SUKMA Supreme Council meeting that she chaired today, adding that boxing and softball were also selected as mandatory sports for SUKMA effective from the 2026 edition. 'This brings the number of mandatory sports to 30. With the four additional sports approved for SUKMA 2026, 34 sports will be contested,' she said at a media conference after chairing the meeting here today, as she noted that the decision was final and no additional appeals would be entertained. This would ensure that the organiser had sufficient time to prepare for the Games, scheduled for Aug 15 to 24, 2026 in Selangor, she added. The meeting today also approved the official participation of the Brunei Darussalam contingent in SUKMA 2026, but the number of sports will be determined by a special technical committee soon, while the State Youth and Sports Exco meeting, which was also held today, agreed that state participation for the Para SUKMA would be managed by state sports councils from 2026, replacing the state youth and sports department to ensure preparation of para athletes was more strategic and focused. Yeoh also shared that they would continue developing sports for women following the lack of female athletes and technical officials in SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, with today's meeting agreeing that for every open event, participation of athletes of different genders were compulsory. 'For sports events contested at the Olympic Games, they will be held and not dropped according to previous SUKMA regulations even if the number of women athletes did not meet the minimum requirement of six states. 'This is a very important departure to encourage women sports continue to provide opportunities to compete, even with the lack of investment and funds from all states,' Yeoh said. Also, each state contingent has been asked to appoint a woman head of contingent or deputy head and to have a 20 per cent quota of female support officials for secretariat and medical duties beginning from SUKMA 2026. 'Selangor SUKMA will have at least 30 per cent female volunteers and 20 per cent female tournament technical officials. I feel this is a very inclusive Games and many will wait to see how this SUKMA is different from the ones before,' she added. — Bernama

KUCHING (Aug 2): The Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) is planning to bring back the Sarawak Premier Cup Muaythai Championship this September in Bintulu. With the venue planned at Naim Street Mall again, PMNS president Jumaat Ibrahim said that this year's championship is expected to attract over 300 participants from across Malaysia and around the world. 'We are hoping to get the strong support from the federal and state governments as well as corporate sponsors to organise this championship. 'For the organising of the Sarawak Premier Cup last year, we received funding support from the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and the State Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development,' he told reporters during a PMNS thanksgiving dinner on Friday. The dinner was to celebrate Sarawak's outstanding performance at the recent National Combat Sports Championship (Pre-Sukma) and Muaythai National Grand Prix, held at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from July 24–27. Sarawak finished second overall, behind Sabah and ahead of Melaka, securing nine gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals. The state team comprised clubs under KSSC Sarawak, including Muaythai Kenyalang Club, Sting Kuching, Phoenix Meranek Samarahan, Bau MT Club, SS Fighter Petrajaya, Singa 30 Miri, and Legacy Kuching. They were joined by four independent clubs — D30 Miri, PS Bintulu, Kilas Petra Jaya, and Rentap Kuching — who participated using their own resources. Among the standout athletes was Sukma XXI silver medallist Azhad Haziq Syafaat Abdul Khalid, who won the National Championship Belt in the 75kg–80kg category and defeated a larger opponent in his bout. Another highlight was Adrynna Thanichaa of Rentap Muaythai Club, who clinched gold and was named Best Female Boxer of the tournament. Jumaat praised the athletes' efforts, noting that the competition served as a valuable exposure platform. 'We didn't set high expectations for this event — our main mission was to give our athletes exposure. 'Still, they performed brilliantly and brought home nine golds, five silvers, and 10 bronze medals, earning us the runner-up title. 'Congratulations to all. Many of these athletes are still young and relatively new, but they've shown incredible potential to go far,' he said. He reminded the athletes that consistent training and discipline are key to long-term success and reiterated PMNS' commitment to sending athletes to more tournaments for experience. 'Our main goal remains — to retain our muaythai championship title at Sukma Selangor next year. But we're aware it won't be easy, as other states are also stepping up their game. 'Events like this and the ones to come are part of our roadmap to prepare everyone for Sukma 2026. So keep training diligently,' he said. Jumaat also thanked the Sarawak government, Sarawak Sports Corporation, and Sarawak State Sports Council for their continued support, along with coaches, team managers, and parents for their vital contributions. The national tournament drew over 2,000 participants across five combat sports — karate, wushu, muaythai, silat, and wrestling — and was officially launched by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
