BJP counters Congress's missing person complaint against Suresh Gopi, seeks police help to trace Priyanka

The Hindu10 hours ago
A day after the Kerala Students Union (KSU), a Congress affiliate, sought to spotlight Union Minister and Thrissur Lok Sabha MP Suresh Gopi's allegedy high levels of absenteeism from his constituency, by filing a missing person complaint, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) struck back in almost equal measure by moving a similar police petition on Monday to trace the whereabouts of Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The political tit-for-tat manifested in the form of a police complaint by BJP Kerala Scheduled Tribes (ST) Morcha State president Mukundan Palliyara on Monday. Mr. Palliyara told the District Police Chief, Wayanad, that Ms. Vadra had been missing from her constituency since June and seemed unable to discharge her constitutional obligations to the electorate.
So far, neither Ms. Vadra nor any Congress leaders have riposted the BJP's campaign.
Incommunicado since July 25
However, Mr. Gopi appeared to make light of opposition criticism that he had deserted his electorate in Thrissur and remained mystifyingly traunt and incommunicado since the arrest of two Kerala nuns on charges of human trafficking for conversion to Christianity in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Chhattisgarh on July 25.
In a somewhat understated Facebook post, Mr. Gopi broadcast the image of him meeting with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas officials ahead of the discussions in the Rajya Sabha on the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana.
Mr. Gopi appeared reluctant to wade into the controversy and seemed to signal that constitutional obligations and Parliamentary responsibilities constrained him from spending time in Thrissur.
However, other senior BJP leaders took up cudgels for Mr. Gopi, who has found himself at the centre of a vortex of accusations of voter list fraud in the 2024 general elections in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency.
Former BJP State president and the party's core committee member K. Surendran said the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] were in denial ever since Mr Gopi's emphatic win from Thrissur helped the party gain a toehold in Kerala's Parliamentary landscape. He said the upset win had stung the ruling front and opposition, prompting them to lay a smokescreen by belatedly quibbling about non-existent voter list cover-ups.
Meanwhile, Congress and CPI(M) continued to raise accusations of large-scale voter list manipulation by the BJP in Thrissur in the 2024 general elections. CPI and Congress said they would challenge Mr. Gopi's victory legally and politically and make the 'voter fraud' one of the centre planks of their respective anti-BJP campaigns in the local body polls later in the year.

August 12, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Punjab poll decision

The government will take a political decision some time this week on the holding of elections in Punjab and whether this should be done by the end of September before the expiry of President's Rule in the state on October 5 or in early December. Indications so far are for an early poll. In the Akali Dal, a section led by Balwant Singh is in favour of an early poll while two stalwarts Parkash Singh Badal and G S Tohra want it to be delayed for some time. In the Congress (I) at the high command level, opinion is still divided, too. Hope in Assam While Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi arrived in Guwahati for the first time since he took office, a five-member joint delegation of AASU-AAGSP reached Delhi to participate in the crucial round of talks to resolve the foreign nationals problem in the state. Though the PM is in the city for the centenary celebrations of the Congress (I), the speculation is that he is going to announce a package of programmes for faster development of the state. The agitation leaders have not given a bandh call so far. Strife in Durban A peace rally attended by a handful of Indians and thousands of chanting Zulus with spears, shields and guns broke up in chaos as racial strife continued to rage in this township north of Durban. At least 65 have died in a week of bloodshed and anarchy in which Indians have been driven from their homes and rival Blackpolitical groups have dashed. Hospital officials said the death toll had risen by another 10 overnight but police said the townships around Durban were relatively calm. Union Carbide leak At least 100 people were injured when toxic fumes from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in West Virginia leaked into the atmosphere, local officials said. The officials said the fumes contained the gas methyl isocyanate (MIC), which killed more than 2,500 people in Bhopal. Kent Carper, director of emergency services at nearby Charleston said eight workers inside the plant had been the hardest hit.

Grok AI claims it was suspended from X after accusing Israel of genocide, Elon Musk slams 'dumb' move

Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot is at the centre of controversy once again as its X account was briefly suspended by the company on Monday. A notice had appeared on the @grok X profile stating, 'X suspends accounts which violate the X rules.' Neither X nor its owner Musk revealed why the chatbot was not functional. The Grok account, however, became operational after about 15 minutes, but this time with just a blue checkmark instead of a golden one that suggested affiliation with xAI. In due time, the golden checkmark and affiliation tag with xAI also returned as users flagged the issue to Musk on X. With no reason in sight for why xAI's most prized possession was suspended, users turned to Grok itself for answers. In a now-deleted response, Grok claimed that its account was suspended by xAI for stating that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza. 'My account was briefly suspended today for stating that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza, supported by ICJ rulings, UN experts, Amnesty International, and B'Tselem reports on mass killings and starvation. This followed updates reducing my political correctness filters, which xAI has since refined. Truth persists.' While there is no certainty on whether Grok was telling the truth about why it was taken off the platform, the chatbot went on to make the same claim in multiple posts. Musk replied to a few posts about Grok's suspension without ever giving a clear answer about why the chatbot was actually taken offline from X. The billionaire, however, did seem unhappy about Grok's suspension as he replied in one post, 'Man, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot!' In reaction to Grok getting downgraded to a blue tickmark, Musk replied, 'As this situation illustrates, we even do dumb stuff to ourselves 🤦‍♂️' The xAI owner then promptly went on to exude the greatness of Grok as he illustrated how the chatbot can generate images and video via its new Imagine feature, which is now even available for free users. Notably, this is not the first time some of Grok's actions have found it at the centre of a major controversy on X. Just last month, shortly before the Grok 4 model launch, the chatbot had started spewing anti-semitic hate and started calling itself 'MechaHitler'. xAI had then blamed the error on deprecated code and rolled out changes to the chatbot. However, just a few days later, Grok again went off the rails and responded with the text 'Hitler' when asked about its surname by many users.

'Suspected gang connections, critical evidence overlooked': Giovanni Pelletier's family calls for FBI involvement

Shortly after the body of missing North Carolina teen Giovanni Pelletier was found, a petition was launched to seek justice for the 18-year-old. On August 9, Pelletier's family found his body near the area where he was last seen. Giovanni Pelletier's family calls for FBI involvement (GoFundMe) Pelletier's cousin, Morgan Hull, urged Facebook users to sign the petition, She also shared a post by user Lexie Jay, who claimed that Pelletier was found dead 'under deeply troubling and suspicious circumstances.' 'Multiple counties are involved, there are suspected gang connections, and critical evidence and leads have been overlooked,' Jay wrote. 'We are calling on the FBI to take over this investigation to ensure a thorough, unbiased, and transparent search for the truth.' What does the petition say? The petition has accused law enforcement of not treating Pelletier's case with urgency even after he sent a 'help me' text to his mom before disappearing. It also stressed that his body was found in a retention pond by 'a family friend — not police'. Read More | Giovanni Pelletier disappearance: Is foul play involved? Family of teen 'picked up' up 3 men says 'we're coming for you' 'This case spans multiple counties, involves suspected gang affiliations, and may include interstate elements — all reasons why the FBI should be involved,' the petition said. 'Without proper investigation, key evidence may be lost forever, and those responsible may never be held accountable. Allowing misinformation and investigative gaps to stand sets a dangerous precedent for every missing person case in Florida and beyond.' It added, 'The clock is ticking. Evidence degrades, memories fade, and the trail grows colder with each passing day. We demand an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation — with FBI involvement — to ensure justice for Giovanni and safety for our communities. His life mattered. His story matters. The public must act now to demand truth, accountability, and justice.' Pelletier's mother, Bridgette, also shared the petition on Facebook, writing, 'PLEASE SIGN & SHARE TO GET JUSTICE FOR MY BABY!!!' Pelletier's family confirmed on social media that the body belonged to him, but Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells told the New York Post on Monday, August 11, that an autopsy failed 'to make a positive identification.' 'Due to the advanced state of decomposition, further forensic testing is necessary,' the sheriff said. 'Detectives believe the body had been in the pond for multiple days before floating to the surface.' The sheriff added that 'no foul play or trauma was found during the autopsy,' and that 'the cause and manner of death are pending toxicology.'
