Hindustan Times20 hours ago
Key road routes cutting traffic congestion and travel time opened on Sunday in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) — the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and two sections of the Dwarka Expressway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated these on Sunday. What's UER-II and why it matters
The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads, besides congestion points such as Mukarba Chowk and Dhaula Kuan, and on the NH-09.
UER-II measures 75.7 kilomeres and is essentially designed as Delhi's third Ring Road. It will thus provide direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat in Haryana from west and south Delhi.
For commuters on the Delhi-Chandigarh route, and further, this will cut travel time. For industry, this will prove to be a major boost, bringing down cost of transport within the National Capital Region and beyond.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), these four packages of UER-II connect Mahipalpur near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Delhi, to Alipur in North Delhi, linking up with routes to Haryana, Punjab and further.
It is part of a corridor that will in future connect five major NCR expressways: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressway. Of the UER-II, 54.21 km is in Delhi and 21.5 km in Haryana. The project cost is
₹ 6,445 crore.
How will Dwarka Expressway's newly-opened sections help?
Phases three and four of the Dwarka Expressway were also opened by PM Modi at the function in Rohini on Sunday afternoon.

Sensex jumps over 1,000 points, Nifty tops 24,953.50 level buoyed by proposed GST reforms

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty surged in early trade on Monday (August 18, 2025), buoyed by plans for big bang reforms in the GST regime by Diwali and S&P upgrading India's sovereign credit rating. Auto, consumer discretionary and consumer durables stocks propelled the rally in the equity market. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 1,021.93 points to 81,619.59 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty surged 322.2 points to 24,953.50. From the Sensex firms, Maruti, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Trent and Bajaj Finserv were among the major gainers. However, Larsen and Toubro, ITC, HCL Technologies and Infosys were the laggards. "There are strong tailwinds for the market with potential to take it higher. Declarations by the prime minister on the next major reforms in GST by Diwali are a big positive. S&P upgrading India's sovereign credit rating is another major positive," VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (August 17, 2025) said the Centre has circulated the draft of the next-generation GST reforms among states and sought their cooperation to implement the proposal before Diwali. Mr. Modi had announced the proposal to reform the GST law in his Independence Day speech on August 15 from the ramparts of the Red Fort. "The expectation is that most of the goods and services will be in the 5 per cent and 18 per cent tax slabs. Sectors like autos and cement, which are presently in the 28 per cent tax slabs, are expected to benefit. TVS Motors, Hero, Eicher, M&M and Maruti are likely to respond positively to the news. Insurance companies are also expected to benefit from the GST revision," Vijayakumar added. In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng traded in positive territory while South Korea's Kospi quoted lower. The U.S. markets ended mostly lower on Friday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.05% to $65.82 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 1,926.76 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. On Thursday, the Sensex climbed 57.75 points or 0.07% to settle at 80,597.66. The Nifty rose by 11.95 points or 0.05% to 24,631.30. Equity markets were closed on Friday for Independence Day.

Hero Moto, Maruti, Tata Motors and other auto stocks jump up to 8%. How a GST rate cut may impact them

Shares of auto majors, including Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki India, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, and Bajaj Auto jumped 5-8% on Monday morning on expectations that the GST rate may be reduced from 28% to 18%. ADVERTISEMENT Currently, two-wheelers are taxed at 28%. Analysts see a high probability of the rate being cut to 18%. 'All the listed 2W OEMs – Bajaj, Hero, TVS, and Eicher – should benefit from this cut. We see a low probability of differential GST between entry-level and premium 2Ws,' Jefferies said. On the passenger vehicles side, small cars attract a tax of 29–31%, including compensation cess. Maruti Suzuki could, therefore, emerge as one of the biggest beneficiaries of a rate cut. Jefferies noted that SUVs are currently taxed at 45–50%, a rate unlikely to come down.'Hybrid vehicles attract a similar GST rate as ICE vehicles, compared with 5% for EVs. Any reduction in GST on hybrids could be positive for Maruti,' it said. Commercial vehicles are also taxed at 28%, which could be cut to 18%. Ashok Leyland, followed by Tata Motors and Eicher, would be key beneficiaries of such a move, the brokerage said. ADVERTISEMENT Brokerages highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day announcement on GST rationalisation and simplification is expected to accelerate consumption recovery. Over the past three years, consumption has been dented by high inflation and rising interest rates. Unlock 500+ Stock Recos on App As part of the restructuring, the government is likely to propose a simplified two-slab GST system (5% and 18%) to replace the existing multi-tier structure (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%).
