Pedro Pascal delivers defiant defence of 'brave movies' after Eddington premiere

Metro17-05-2025
Pedro Pascal has shared a defiant message about the importance of making 'brave movies' after his new film Eddington premiered at Cannes.
The latest film from Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster, Eddington sees Pascal's mayor pitted against Joaquin Phoenix's sheriff in a small-town New Mexico as the pandemic raged in May 2020.
As a biting satire, the movie dives into hot-button issues that flared at the time, like mask-wearing mandates vs personal freedoms and the Black Lives Matter movement.
With fear constantly in the background, and emotions and misinformation running rife, Eddington's population is pushed to breaking point and a dramatic face-off between its residents.
At the Cannes press conference, attended by Metro, many questions skewed political given the film's topics, with The Last of Us star Pascal and filmmaker Aster most willing to wade into the discourse.
US journalist Chaz Ebert shared her personal worry over possible issues at the American border for creatives in the film industry, asking if any of the panel – which also comprised of Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes and British rising star Micheal Ward – 'fear having anything put in your dossier because of the brave movies that you make'.

She referenced speaking with international guests for a film festival she holds 'who were afraid to come to America'.
'I think fear is the way that they win, one. And so, keep telling the stories and keep expressing yourself,' Pascal responded to claps of approval from the audience.
'And f**k the people that try to make you scared, you know, and fight back. Don't let them win,' he added above cheers from the assembled press.
Pascal delighted fans previously at the Thunderbolts* London premiere in April with this 'protect the dolls' T-shirt in support of the trans community and his actress sister, Lux.
Aster, 38, picked up on his actor's answer in Cannes – and also the reality of the risky, envelope-pushing Eddington, admitted: 'The truth is, I'm scared of everything all the time. So I mean, the tongue is sort of in the cheek in that answer. But it's also true.'
Eddington's initial response from critics at Cannes has been divided and somewhat muted.
Fantastic Four: First Steps star Pascal was also asked to comment on Latin migrants in America and if he feared it would become 'an absolutely closed country to the world'.
'It's obviously very scary for an actor who participated in a movie to sort of speak to issues like this. It's far too intimidating of a question for me to really address. I'm not informed enough,' he began, before stating that he wanted 'people to be safe and to be protected, and I want very much to live on the right side of history'.
He touched on his personal experience as an immigrant and refugee from Chile with his parents.
'We fled a dictatorship, and I was privileged enough to grow up in the US and, after asylum, in Denmark. And if it weren't for that, I don't know what would have happened to us, and so I stand by those protections always.'
He then self-effacingly added: 'I'm too afraid of your question, I hardly remember what it was.'
At the top of the conference, he had joked that, having been 'awed' by some of Aster's previous movies, he was surprised the director wasn't somehow 'more pretentious' and 'meaner' – but instead the opposite.
Joker actor Phoenix, 50, also commented to laughs that his experience working with Aster this time around was 'better' after their previous film, 2023 tragicomedy Beau is Afraid, debuted to mixed reviews and took a reported $35million (£26.3m) loss. More Trending
Pascal revealed that he was 'afraid to go back' and examine his own experience during the pandemic for his role in Eddington as he was 'isolated and in relationship to my algorithm'.
'I felt like [Aster] wrote something that were all of my worst fears realised as far as what that lockdown experience was and what it promised to kind of deliver, in all of its fracturing of an already fractured society.'
Oscar-winner Stone, 36, then added: 'Looking into some of the things that are in this film that hadn't been in my algorithm unfortunately added them to my algorithm! Because once you start googling it, you start seeing more and more things that – so it just gets, it's a real rabbit hole very quickly. So unfortunately, I'm still getting fed some crazy s**t!'
Eddington premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in the US on July 18. It is yet to receive a UK release date.

The Fortune Hotel Season 2: release schedule, eliminations and where to watch

ITV competition show The Fortune Hotel is in full season 2 swing, with 11 pairs of contestants battling it out to find a briefcase stuffed with a £250,000 prize. Hot off the heels of BBC show The Traitors, in eight episodes players must work out which pair has the winning briefcase, and the goal is to end up with it at the end of the show. Daily challenges decide what order players can either keep or swap their briefcases, with the quarter of a mill secretly changing hands throughout the series. Eight briefcases are empty, while the ninth has an 'early checkout card' – which eliminates players landed with it at the end of each episode. Presenter Stephen Mangan told Metro how the show can be pretty savage, as winning requires contestants to lie and cheat. 'It's really difficult to brutally pull the plug on another pair and send them home, but you have to do it,' he explained. The series began with 11 pairs of contestants who know each other in some capacity, much like Race Across The World's format. Hoping for a chance to win were best friends Maz and Max; fellow besties Chelsey and Briony; father and son Atholl and John; brothers Jake and Mike; couple Allan and Jacob; couple Nella and Tope, partners Fred and Min; mum and daughter Martina and Briony; friends Gurk and Guv; and dad and daughter James and Yasmine. Players come from all walks of life, with jobs ranging from tech to cleaning, and retirees are also having a stab. Last week's episode ended on a cliffhanger – spoiler ahead – as with the introduction of a second early check-out card, both Fred and Min and Allan and Jacob seemed to be at risk. However host Stephen revealed only one of the pairs would be going home – as voted for by their other contestants, ouch . Tonight revealed Maz and Max sent home Allan and Jacob through tears, leaving them 'gutted'. So far other eliminated contestants include cleaning business owners Briony and Chelsey; retired police officer Atholl and son John from the Scottish borders; Wigan-born brothers Mike and Jake; and salesman Guv and poker player Gurks. Episodes are airing weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Vinny fears his secret being exposed in Emmerdale as the police get involved

Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) is potentially very close to having his secret exposed in Emmerdale. Last week, Vinny invited a man called Mike over to his house. He met him through an LGBTQI+ forum, and connected with Mike because they both shared thoughts about their sexuality. Mike and Vinny sat down and chatted, but things took a turn when Mike suggested that Vinny wanted to sleep with him. It was in this moment that Vinny realised the man he had told some very honest information to was someone entirely different. Mike's true colours saw him brutally attack Vinny and take £10,000 from him. In the aftermath, because Vinny was so afraid of telling Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) the truth, he conjured up another plan that justified why he had sustained so many stomach injuries. Outside, Vinny tried to goad his best friend Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) into attacking him. That was never going to happen but because Gabby saw Kammy push Vinny, he was able to frame him for the attack. Gabby has been adamant that Kammy needs reporting to the police, but Vinny hasn't gone this far. Instead, he's quietly retreated into a bit of a shell, heavily impacted by the attack, overwhelmed with thoughts about his sexuality, and consumed with guilt for framing his friend. In this evening's episode, Vinny was surprised to see two police officers approach him while at the scrapyard. They confirmed that Mike's real name is actually Graham, and that he's being investigated for extortion. What will Vinny do next? The police officers wondered why Vinny made a payment of £10,000 to Graham but he didn't say anything. Can he bring himself to tell the police what really happened? He could find the courage to tell them that he was subjected to a homophobic attack from Graham, but whether he relays this to Gabby or not is another thing entirely. Which path will Vinny choose? Vinny has been struggling ever since he tried to kiss Kammy earlier this year. Shortly after it happened, Vinny claimed it was a joke and reminded Kammy that he's currently engaged to Gabby. More Trending In the days that followed, Kammy tried to talk to Vinny about the moment and how it made him feel, but he pushed his mate away. Vinny made contact with Mike after a conversation with Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), who volunteers for a mental health charity. Paddy spoke about how valuable the charities are, and how they help people feel less alone. Vinny took to the internet and found a forum. He messaged Mike and spoke to him about a variety of things. Netflix thriller with 20m views hits major stumbling block for season 2 return

Fans of The Perfect Couple who were waiting with bated breath – while clad in their finest garms – may have to wait a little longer than anticipated for the next glamorous instalment of the Netflix hit. In March it was reported that the limited series – starring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Eve Hewson and others – was getting a follow-up season from another Nantucket-set book by best-selling The Perfect Couple author Elin Hilderbrand. The book in question is 2024's Swan Song, and it was set to be written by The Bear producer Joanna Calo. However, Deadline now reports Joanna has exited the project, according to sources, and there is no confirmed replacement for the much-anticipated Swan Song adaption, said to be in early development. A representative from Netflix declined to provide Deadline a comment, and has never confirmed a possible Perfect Couple season two. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Swan Song follows the Gatsby-esque mysterious Richardson family – who throw parties, mingle and flirt with locals, while making sure everyone knows how super loaded they are. But then the worst happens when their house burns to a crisp and an employee goes missing, leaving the whole well-to-do island – where houses are worth an average of at $4.1million (£3mill) – left in chaos. It was reported Australian acting royalty Nicole and Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier would be co-producing the Swan Song series, as they did The Perfect Couple. Upon its release in September 2024, the first series racked up a whopping 20 million views in a week, topping the most-watched chart after only four days. The series was initially reviewed poorly, with some critics calling it a genre 'mess'. However viewers were hooked and are waiting impatiently for more upmarket murders, making it a successful swing after all. Speaking to Metro last year, director Susanne emphasised the significance of the Nantucket setting, describing the island as 'super important.' 'The island of Nantucket is, is a, is a player of its own. And it's not just the physical Island. It's also like a mental island. 'It is very, it's, it's very insular for good and bad.' Nicole previously revealed she wanted to make sure Liev's ex Naomi Watts was happy with her starring next to him before taking the role. She told Entertainment Weekly: 'We always check in, we're besties. That was very kind of her to do that.' More Trending After giving Nicole her blessing, Naomi revealed she was excited to tune in, as she told EW: 'I'm desperate to [watch] because everyone is raving about it. It just launched, what, two days ago. 'I'm very much looking forward to it. I have seen the trailer. It looks fantastic.' The plot follows the drama after a shocking death derails a lavish high-wedding between Benji Winbury (Billy Howle) and Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), and turns everyone into a suspect. However, Swan Song, if it does end up being made, will have a whole new cast and set of characters, à la The White Lotus. Got a story?
