Isolated strong storms possible in Southeast Michigan Tuesday afternoon and evening

A new storm system will bring a chance for some stronger storms to Southeast Michigan. There is a marginal (one out of five) risk of strong to severe storms in Southeast Michigan for the Tuesday afternoon and evening commute. The main threats will be isolated and not widespread from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Tuesday. There is an isolated chance for strong wind gusts at 50 to 60 miles per hour, as well as some heavy downpours that could lead to localized flooding. A new front will move in and bring some storms ahead of it, into Tuesday night. Behind the front, temperatures will go from near 90 degrees to the low 80s. The average high temperature in Detroit is 82 degrees. Feels like temperatures will go from the mid- to upper 90s back closer to the actual temperatures.

Newberry expected to be without power for at least 24 hours

The Village of Newberry, the "Moose Capital of Michigan' located about an hour west of Sault Ste. Marie, is expected to be without power for at least 24 hours while daytime temperatures are expected to reach 86 degrees. A transformer in the village's power substation stopped working, causing a system-wide outage, according to a Facebook post by the village. As of 9:13 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, the village has contacted a company to provide a portable power system and anticipates 24-48 hours or more until power is restored, according to the post. The village previously had a backup generator, but it failed in 2022 and was taken offline because it could not be repaired, according to the Village of Newberry. The village's backup generator system for its water system is not working properly, and the village's Facebook post urges residents to 'use water sparingly.' Temperatures in Newberry are expected to reach highs of 86 degrees on Saturday and 82 degrees on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. At night, temperatures are expected in the mid-60s, along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday night.
