Malaysia, Italy To Forge Strategic Defence Partnership
BERLIN, May 14 (Bernama) – Malaysia and Italy have agreed to initiate a strategic partnership in the field of defence, including a proposed government-to-government (G2G) memorandum of understanding (MoU) on asset procurement.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said his bilateral meeting with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto yesterday, held on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 here, marked the first engagement of its kind.
He said the meeting was initiated at Italy's request, signalling its interest in deepening defence ties with Malaysia.
'Malaysia welcomes Italy's intention and sees it as an opportunity to enhance defence relations not only through asset procurement, but also through strategic cooperation, including technology transfer that truly benefits the development of our local defence industry,' he said when met here.
According to Mohamed Khaled, Malaysia has previously procured military assets from Italy and now seeks to build on that relationship to pave the way for more meaningful collaboration, particularly in terms of local capability development.
'We want every procurement to come with effective technology transfer, not just symbolic gestures. This is crucial to ensure that we are not merely end users, but are also capable of developing our own defence industry,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled added that Italy also expressed interest in G2G acquisitions, which are proven to be more transparent, cost-effective, and offer stronger guarantees for the recipient country.
He explained that G2G arrangements enable the country to avoid third-party interference, while the supplying government can provide direct assurance in cases of delays or failure to deliver assets.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry (MoE) has directed all state education directors and district education officers to carry out spot checks in schools to combat bullying. Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said officials would also conduct night visits to boarding schools, not only to monitor but to better understand the living conditions of boarding students. "Perhaps we need to visit unannounced. We go to schools to observe the situation and understand the nature of the school and how things operate. Night visits to dormitories may be necessary," he told reporters after the Madani Teachers Appreciation Event, officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. He added that the ministry has instructed school principals and headmasters to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' (We Hate Bullying) before and after each school session, aiming to instil a strong rejection of bullying among students. Tanjong MP distributes Jalur Gemilang for National Month celebrations
GEORGE TOWN: The Tanjong MP Service Centre has distributed 1,600 Jalur Gemilang flags to 21 schools in the parliamentary constituency in preparation for National Day and Malaysia Day 2025. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying officiated the distribution of 6,000 mini Jalur Gemilang flags to students at the Tanjong Parliamentary Constituency District Level National Month Launching Ceremony. Lim, who is also the Tanjong MP, encouraged all schools in the area to proudly display the Jalur Gemilang at their gates, buildings, or classrooms. She emphasised that the flag is more than just a decoration but a symbol of spirit, hope, and responsibility for the younger generation. 'Let every corner be decorated with the Jalur Gemilang colours as a symbol of unity of heart, love for the country and appreciation for the sacrifices of past warriors,' she said. Lim also presided over the 2024 STPM Excellence Incentive Presentation Ceremony, awarding RM10,600 to 28 high-achieving students. Two students from Kolej Tingkatan Enam Hutchings and SMKA Al-Mashoor Perempuan achieved a perfect Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 4.0.
