THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer's opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark's biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.

Viral crowd video from Oasis gig sparks fan fury
Irish fans are counting down the days to Oasis' two sold-out shows at Croke Park on August 16th and 17th, 2025 – part of the band's long-awaited reunion tour and their first time on stage together in 16 years. But while the shows are already being hailed as legendary, not every moment has struck the right chord with fans. A now-viral clip from night two in Cardiff has ignited a fierce debate online after a concertgoer shared footage of dozens of fans sitting down during Cast No Shadow. Scanning the seated crowd, she captioned her video: 'Why is everyone sat down – this is who you lost tickets to btw'. @laurabradshxw Oasis Cardiff N2 you were CLASS #oasis #cardiff #principalitystadium #liamgallagher #noelgallagher #oasisreunion #oasisliveforever #castnoshadow #concert #livemusic #fyp ♬ original sound – laurabradshxw The backlash was instant, and divided. Some were quick to express frustration: 'Why is no one singing!' one person said while another fan commented: 'I wasn't sat down. Stood up singing loud and proud as everyone should have been for the struggle it was to get tickets.' Another fumed: 'Real fans of Oasis missed out so people can come and sit down at a concert.' Pic: AFP STRINGER/AFP via Getty Images However, plenty of others jumped to the crowd's defence: One argued: 'Because they're original fans and our backs are shot to pieces.' Another said: 'I would be seating too – appreciating and taking it all in. Standing and jumping about isn't the only way to enjoy it.' And that wasn't the only crowd controversy in Cardiff. Another fan moment went viral from the opening night, this time involving the use of Shazam. As Richard Ashcroft took to the stage and began Bitter Sweet Symphony, one woman in the crowd was caught using her phone to identify the 1997 Britpop anthem – a song widely considered one of the most iconic of the era. Pic: AFP STRINGER/AFP via Getty Images Online, fans were stunned, one said: 'Imagine not knowing the greatest song of all time,' while another fumed: 'Seriously! I couldn't get a ticket because of these people.' Despite the viral moments and online spats, one thing isn't up for debate amongst fans, the band certainly delivered. Oasis will take to Dublin on August 16 and 17 for two sold-out nights in Croke Park, before heading to North America, South America, and back to Wembley before performing in South Korea and Japan. They'll then head to Australia, before wrapping up the tour in São Paolo, Brazil, in November.

CBB sex offender Stephen Bear marries teen bride in Brazil
Bear was jailed in 2023 after a jury found him guilty of voyeurism and disclosing private, sexual photographs and films Bear gets down on one knee as he serenades his new wife Disgraced Celebrity Big Brother winner and convicted sex offender Stephen Bear has married his teenage girlfriend in Brazil. Just 18 months after he was released from prison for sharing a sex tape of his Love Island ex-girlfriend Georgia Harrison, the 35-year-old announced the news in a series of Instagram posts on Friday. A number of videos of the reality star serenading his young bride have appeared online, including one showing him singing Frankie Valli's 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' as he spins 18-year-old Miami around the dancefloor. Donning a pink suit for the ceremony, Bear, who revealed in January that he had relocated to Brazil to live with Miami - captioned the post: 'My wedding. Mr and Mrs Bear.' Other photographs feature the couple's wedding cake with figurines of the newlyweds and in others, their wedding rings. In January, Bear revealed he had relocated to Brazil where he filmed himself on the beach with his much younger girlfriend. Bear gets down on one knee as he serenades his new wife Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 5th 'The police can't catch me now,' he declared. 'Life's good. I thought I'd come on here guys and say I love you all, simple as that. I love you all. 'Stay true, because this year I'm fully active, I'm off licence. The police, they could still be after me, but I'm in Brazil. They can't catch me now. Catch me if you can. 'I'm just chilling out,' he added while drinking a beer, 'licence is finished, police is finished. I can be completely left alone, ready to enjoy my life now. 'All my conditions are just lifted. Now I can post on social media, that was the main condition, watch this space.' He then turned the camera around to show his girlfriend while boasting: 'I'm in Brazil, I don't know if you've heard. This is my 18-year-old Latina girlfriend, say hello baby.' Since he was freed after serving half of his sentence, he has been making a living as an adult content creator on X-rated subscription site OnlyFans, according to MailOnline, where he sells videos of himself for $20 each. While he still has 193,000 Instagram followers and claims to be a millionaire, he has set up a GoFundMe campaign to build a 'Christ The Bear' statute that he claimed would rival Brazil's famed Christ The Redeemer. Bear shared pictures of his wedding to Miami online Bear, from Loughton, Essex, was jailed in 2023, after a jury found him guilty of voyeurism and disclosing private, sexual photographs and films. He was also ordered to hand over the money that prosecutors say he earned from illegally sharing the footage on OnlyFans. Meanwhile, his ex Georgia who is expecting her first child with boyfriend Jack Stacey, is set to become the first Love Island star to be awarded an MBE for her efforts on tackling violence against women and girls. Harrison waived her right to anonymity as she campaigned for stricter laws around revenge porn. She told the Proceeds of Crime hearing at the time: 'I had to live in fear that this was going to come out and my family were going to know about it. 'It was just like the worst feeling you can ever possibly imagine. I felt violated, I felt embarrassed - I hated myself for a really long time.' The criminal trial heard how Harrison and Bear had consensual sex at his home in Loughton, however, she did not know they were being filmed nor did she consent to the film being shared. Last year, Georgia released her memoir Taking Back My Power: Our Bodies. Our Consent in which she reflected on her experience. The couple celebrate their big day 'It's a hard read,' she admitted to the Mirror. 'There was a lot of traumatic things that happened to me very close together, but I hope that people can be inspired and hope I can truly help people going through hard times to navigate their journey and to have a bit of faith that it's not the end and there are tools to get through those moments. 'And once you do there's always something on the other side.' Bear who won Celebrity Big Brother in 2016, and Ms Harrison were captured having sex on CCTV cameras in Bear's garden on August 2, 2020. Bear, who has also appeared on Ex On The Beach, claimed at Chelmsford Crown Court that he deleted the footage that day and had shared it with no-one other than Ms Harrison. But a jury later found him guilty by unanimous verdicts of two counts of disclosing private sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress. He was also found guilty of voyeurism, by a majority verdict of 10 jurors

‘We will beat British Government for second time in court' – Kneecap at largest ever gig
The rap trio played in Finsbury Park, London, on Saturday evening as a supporting act for Fontaines D.C Next month will see 'the second time Kneecap have beat the British Government in court', the Irish rap trio said at their largest gig to date. The 45,000-strong crowd in Finsbury Park, London watched them walk on in front of a screen that said 'Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people'. They were supporting Irish band Fontaines DC, whose front man Grian Chatten joined to perform their collaboration Better Way To Live. People echoed the Belfast group's chants when they repeated the 'f*** Keir Starmer' and 'you're just a s*** Jeremy Corbyn' comments made at Glastonbury the previous weekend. Liam Óg O hAnnaidh, who performs as Mo Chara, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier this month charged with a terror offence and will return next month. Fellow member Naoise Ó Cairealláin, who uses the stage name Móglaí Bap, said 'if anyone's free on the 20th of August, you wanna go to the court and support Mo Chara' before shouting 'free Mo Chara, free, free Mo Chara'. Wearing a keffiyeh, Ó hAnnaidh responded: 'I appreciate it, the 20th of August is going to be the second time Kneecap have beat the British Government in court – in their own court, on their own terms, and we're going to beat them for the second time. 'I tell you what, there is nothing like embarrassing the British Government.' Last year Kneecap won a discrimination challenge over a decision by former business secretary Kemi Badenoch to refuse them a £14,250 funding award. The UK Government conceded it was 'unlawful' after the band launched legal action claiming the decision to refuse the grant discriminated against them on grounds of nationality and political opinion. It was agreed that the £14,250 sum would be paid by the Government to the group. During the performance the group intermittently broke off the mosh pits and raucous crowd by addressing the war in Gaza, which is a recurring theme of their shows. The crowd in Finsbury Park (Jeff Moore/PA) Ó hAnnaidh said: 'It's usually around this point of the gig that we decide to talk about what's happening in Palestine. 'I understand that it's almost inhumane that I'm thinking of new things to say on stage during a genocide, for sound bites. 'It's beyond words now, like, we always used to say obviously they're being bombed from the skies with nowhere to go, but it's beyond that now. 'They've been being starved for a few months on end, and not only that, the areas that they have set up, to collect aid and food, have turned into killing fields and they're killing hundreds a day trying to collect food.' He continued: 'It's beyond words, but again, we played in Plymouth last night to 750 people and we did the same thing, so it doesn't matter how big or small our audience is, Kneecap will always use the platform for talking about this.' Ó Cairealláin had said earlier in the show: 'They can try and silence us, they can try and stop us, but we're not going to stop talking about Palestine – as long as there's a genocide happening in Palestine we're going to keep talking about it and yous are going to keep talking about it, and they can't stop us.' Liam Og O Hannaidh (Jeff Moore/PA) 'Kneecap is not the story. Genocide in Gaza is' – Belfast rappers release new video demanding action against Israel The UN human rights office has recorded 613 killings near humanitarian convoys and at aid distribution points in Gaza run by an Israeli-backed American organisation since it began operations in late May. On Friday its spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the rights office was not able to attribute responsibility for the killings, but 'it is clear that the Israeli military has shelled and shot at Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points' operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The GHF has denied any serious injuries or deaths on its sites and says shootings outside their immediate vicinity are under the purview of Israel's military. The Israeli military has said previously it fires warning shots to control crowds or at Palestinians who approach its troops.
